I'm 85 yo...I remember Joe...nice bloke, but really, not a REAL classy boxer...he was "in the right place at the right time". He fought "Our Henry" at the right time for him...Henry, in his prime, would have floored Joe by the end of round two...NO doubt about THAT...BELIEVE ME!! :) Cheers mate!!

He was one tough cookie , always liked to see him fight . Did not know he actually won a world title and I think if he had more power in his punch he could have been really great.

He killed a man early in his career, I think that’s why he rarely went for the KO. I’ve heard he busted Quarry up in sparring. He held his own against Frazier and Lyle and destroyed Dunn.
If he was up for it, he’d beat any of today’s Heavyweights.

You brought that up. He didn’t have the killer instinct. 👍

I never forget joe was offered 20000 pound to fight in the uk but said 20000 that wouldn’t pay Marlene’s make up bill

Nice job. Joe was probably my favourite boxer, but I really only knew about him in the early 80s after he knocked out Winston Allen. He seemed pretty aggressive in that fight. Managed to catch his knockout of Richard Dunn on CZcams. Kind of gives a glimpse of what might have been. Can’t be proven either way, and it’s all personal opinion, but I think he’d do well against today’s heavyweights.

Great chin, durable, and superb defensive skills. Just sometimes lacked the killer instinct.

Lovely tribute but, considering Joe competed in the same era as Ali, 'Greatest Showman' couldn't be any more starkly reflected.
Joe was probably underrated by the broader audience in his own era, not least because they resented him knocking their favourite (Henry Cooper) off his perch. Notwithstanding intermittent retirement, one must acknowledge Joe's longevity and the fact he was a genuine contender in a particularly strong era (Ali, Frazier, Lyle, Foreman et al).
    Cheers Frank and cheers Joe.

Cooper must be the only man to win BBC/SPOTY not once but twice due to fights he lost first Ali then Bugner as to Joe one always felt he lacked the killer instinct maybe due an opponent dying after one of his early fights having said that i'll never forget the night i watched him win on the Ali underbill in Dublin

Sad to hear Joe Bugner has dementia. It's seems something that a lot of ex-boxers get.
