Besides the joke, Shaggy was only calm about it before because it was just “oh he retries when he loses” but then Matt was like “what if he doesn’t?” and it scared him because he realized they could all stop existing if that was the case, he only realized it then. It’s similar to some Undertale AUs where they realize that the player controls their existence.
