I can't believe I never heard of Geordie or Killing Joke until he passed away (grew up in the 70's & 80's). Now bands like Metallica (Or Kirk's guitar style), and songs like Nirvana's "Come As You Are" make so much sense to me.

Exactly my feeling. I think there's a Welsh word - hiraeth - that is sharper and more sadly longing than the English "nostalgia". It's a heartfelt yearning for a fondly remembered past that cuts deep and is indeed bittersweet.
Poppies by Teardrop Explodes or Public Image have the same effect on me. They put me in an exact time and place where the world was full of possibilities and i was bursting with raw energy 😁

The odd thing about the 80's is that they feel more futuristic than the future we actually ended up getting in the 2020's.

    • @zoomosis
      @zoomosis Před 3 měsíci +7

For someone who grew up listening to the music of the '60s this would've been incredibly futuristic and almost completely alien.
The musicians at the time would've known they were breaking new ground with the technology available to them, especially with synths and new production techniques. The newly-available tech influenced and inspired how the songs were written and recorded. Plus of course the rock and punk music of the '70s that the members of bands like Killing Joke would've grown up listening to. The Fixx is another band that springs to mind.
It's a snapshot in time that can't be replicated again.
Which isn't to say we can't still record new music like this. But it's arguably more difficult now because the same inspirations aren't there.

"Heartshine" by Mother Love Bone (recorded in 1989), with a similar thundering riff and pounding drums, does something similar - also a brilliant song and to me that one is also about a generation, not just one guy's anguish. Now we are almost there once again.

Whoa that's crazy and beautiful to read. Killing Joke has had a lot of great material of 40 years, very diverse but bluntly put...a sort of punk period but with synth and some good writing, then came this era which was very underrated by fans at the time...Night Time (1985) and Brighter Than a Thousand Suns (1986) may be to your taste; especially the former since Love Like Blood is on it. From there it got more progy and then they got heavier, a bit industrial, not full on metal to my metal attuned ears but that's what music journalists will say : ) ha. Democracy (1996) is also great, took awhile to click. But for anyone reading Night Time is really work it start to finish, it was the bridge between the first big style jump.
Glad I finally got into them in the past few years after numerous encounters; I had become so focused on singles and then life turned more introspective. A lot of people only like one or two albums because they can be so different in terms of face value aesthetic i.e. "rebellious uk punk" "new wave" "industrial" "shoegaze" all styles a good band can perform as can a skilled theater actor; playing a variety of roles with a pathos that is still their own.
P.S. I sometimes read my uncle's old diaries and it is an amazing connection to have their voice in your head again. Be well friend.

It doesn't get much better than this.
It's one of the best crafted songs of all time and one of the best audio experiences of the 80's.
I thank the Universe for me being born in 1961.
When Killing Joke played at The Glider Room, Dee Why Hotel in the mid- 80's the sound engineer had everything tirned up to eleven, probably louder.
The Bass was causing much discomfort to the people in the packed room.
Big tough, tattooed guys were leaving the venue because the excruciating volume was intolerable.
My existence was like a Clash song " Should I Stay or Should I go.
I stayed, because I didn't want to miss my only chance to see this band LIVE.
Looking around the room to see the crowd singing along with passion to EIGHTIES, was worth the price of admission.
    Great band!!!!!

As Lemmy famously said: "If its too loud, you're too old!". Roughly same age as you, grew up with this band in the UK, Thatchers Britain and all that, Killing Joke distilled and encapsulated the feeling of the time. Hear this, or "Eighties" and I'm transported back instantly. What a tune. What a band. What days to be alive.

Well we know this was a masterpiece when I herd it at the time ...give you goose bumps ...well the whole Brighter than a 1000s suns album including the cover.
I was a teen and never heard of them and was just getting in post punk /punk.
But the big airy (space), hollow sound was not originally theirs....they got that from The Chameleons. But the big sound with the muscular guitar riff became their finger print.
