On the 40th birthday of James Joyce on February 2, 1922, in Paris, Shakespeare and Company published Ulysses. It is usually considered one of the most important works of modernist fiction and even - some contend - the greatest novel of the twentieth century. In essence, it is a comic novel definitively employing innovative stream of consciousness techniques in combination with endlessly inventive stylistic experimentation.

Why are most of the great writers of Ireland not Gaelic irish

Most of the great writers of Ireland are Gaelic Irish if we look at the extensive chronology of that language. Irish language writing is underemphasized because of its intricacy and difficulty. English language writing has a broader appeal to an international audience and is easier to teach and place within debates about colonization and empire. - Patrick O'Donnell
