  • In this video I will show you and explain what I look at to decide if I want to reuse an old engine block or scrap it. I owned it and used it in many different cars over the last 30 years.

    Good to see you EZGZ. Great info! Down here we can get lifters +0.20 and +0.30. I often have to have the lifter holes bored.
    Most all the cases I get are really rough and tired (hot third world country) It is amazing though how forgiving these cases are if you stick to stock. Built 14 engines up till now, only one came unraveled.

    My first play with VW engine is a 65 1200 40hp stock pick up with extra parts for 50 bucks. Have to take it apart though to see why it won't turn by have a full 360 without a dead stop. Looked into the cylinders but nothing in there except oil and carbon. To me it's just a fun project to see what the inside of this looks like and see what I got. I know I have enough parts to clean up, test and sell if all else fails. Got a ton of tips watching your video so it will be very helpful moving forward on this even though it's an old single port basic block.

    I have built a few motors from parts other people were throwing away or I have swept up off the garage floor. Mismatched stuff I was told you can't use. The freedom that comes with not really giving a crap what other people say you can or can't do. One motor comes to mind that I still see driving around 10+ years and who knows home many miles later. Yeah it has low old pressure, yeah you don't want to wind it up much more then 4k or the noise of the piston skirts rattling in the cylinders will make your teeth hurt. But it still keeps chugging along, giving the current owner many miles of smiles. Have fun, experiment, see what some others are doing and in the end, just do something, even if it wrong, because ya just never know what you might come up with. Remember, too loose and nobody knows, too tight and everybody knows. A phrase stolen from another VW guy who just did and didn't care. Thanks EZ, I love your approach and the knowledge you are sharing.

      Hello again, EZGZ.
      Remember me? I broke my engine. I now have another one, a AR 1600.
      Thing is…I ran it with the clutch cable too tight which in turn,has made the hole in the thrust wallow out and go oblong,giving it too much end float. Would just a new set of bearing cure my problem and bring the endfloat back to spec?
      The bearing still presses into the case,but not as tight as it could be. Would I need a align bore? Or can I just replace the bearing?
      All the best.👍🏾🛠🇬🇧

      Thanks Simon, I appreciate the feedback. A 1641 rebuild will make a small amount more power for a short time but will NEVER last as long as a stock 1600DP that is well taken care of or rebuilt correctly. In ether case a camshaft like a Engel W90 will give a small boost with stock carb and exhaust. No need to go overboard there if funds are low.

    I still would never use cast crank. 4340 forged. 74 and chromoly short rods. If you put out any horsepower the cast will still break. maybe small 2 barrel or stock carb. but seems like a waste of money to me.

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  Před 4 lety +1

      You don't say....? I must have gotten lucky when I built the 1776 using a cast counter weighted CB Crank for my 66. It was a budget build reusing the old case. Did not want to sink a lot of money into it. Seem's to take a lickin and keep's on tickin. The added crank weight made it extra smooth.
      Have you tried that new extra heavy flywheel that CB came out with? Seems like a great idea for a bus or baja with big tires. Might have to try one of those. Seems like I'm always experimenting with the odd ball stuff. LOL

      @@TheEZGZ on a big engine it is best to use a lightened flywheel because they tend to rev quicker and that ads stress to the dowel pins and gland nut. We dont use cast cranks but they would be OK on a stock engine or low HP engine trying to run higher RPM on the freeway. seen several broken ones. For a few extra dollars those 4340 china cranks. are OK. They are all the same except for a select few. Mostly made by the same manufacturer CB might use the same crank and just check it better before they send it out. or machine the flywheel end. But still the same stuff. AA performance has them for a bit less money. or carcraft. Same stuff. Same with Aluminum cases. All autolinia. just stamped with different manufacturers signature like empi CB or whatever. Check with Jonathan at AA to get the good guy price for youtubers.

      Everyone has a different opinion and even mine has changed over the years. Lately I’ve been real pleased with a mild cam like a Engel 100 or Scat C25 for an all around camshaft.
      Most new lightened flywheel come with 8 dowels. Be sure and get the chrome moly and not the cheap cast flywheels. Don’t forget that o-ring seal inside the flywheel.

    Hey ezgz, i have a dual 1600 that i want to rebuild as my first stock engine rebuild. Two of the dowel pin holes are wallowed. I checked the case gab, and it looks good. It needs a line bore for sure but is worth it to fix. Local machest is saying $150 to line bore and another 90 for the crank. Not sure about what else may be needed. But it is looking like we're getting close to the cost of a new case or long block. Thoughts?

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  Před 5 měsíci

      Around here a line bore goes for $75
      A new counterweighted forged crank is $150 so know way would I spend money on a old crank with bad pins. Good Luck with your project.

  • @HiTechDiver
    @HiTechDiver Před 3 lety

    If everything else about a case was perfect except that lifter bore, could that be bored out and have a bushing pressed in to take up the slack? Considering the price of a new case, if that was the only thing wrong it seems like a feasible option. What say you?

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  Před 3 lety

      I've heard of folks putting in a brass sleeve.
      Who would have the time and tools to do it properly?
      Who would have the experience to know how to do it correctly?
      Who would do it and guarantee their work?
      When a lifter bore is that far gone and the lifter has been beating on the camshaft that long and hard(50 miles) chances are the camshaft bearing supports have been beat out. They do not make oversize cam bearings.

    Hey, I'm a new subscriber and I'm enjoying all the useful info on your channel. I'm building my first vw 1600. I'm going leave it pretty much stock maybe a little bigger cam and two barrel carburetor. The case I have is pretty decent but it had got water in it and caused some fairly good size pits in the sump area. I poked them pretty hard with a screw diver and none of them go all the way through. I was thinking about using some jb weld to fill in the pits sence this area doesn't have alot of stress. I really don't want to buy a new case and spend a whole lot of money sence this is my first build of a vw engine. I would like to know your thoughts on this. Thanks 👍

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  Před 4 lety +1

      That JB weld is amazing stuff. I haven't used it for what your descrbing but if you clean it as best you can and then can gouge it out further so the metal looks bright and new you have a chance of it sticking better. Remember that thing has been under the oil and heated and cooled many times..... Forget about the cam and carb and just try to build it stock and get it to run the way it is without patching it. This will allow you to gain experience and see if you want to stay in the game. Then start saving up for your dream engine and buy good quality parts. You can always add 1.25 ratio rockers and dual carbs for the one you have.

    Hay ez what micron oil filter would you think is needed for the bug motor thanks

    • @TheEZGZ
      @TheEZGZ  Před 3 lety

      High efficiency oil filters are a type of bypass filter that are claimed to allow extended oil drain intervals.[5] HE oil filters typically have pore sizes of 3 micrometres, which studies have shown reduce engine wear.[12] Some fleets have been able to increase their drain intervals up to 5-10 times.
      Personally I think it is more important to change your oil every 3k miles. Anything is better than the stock screen. I change my filter every other time. I buy something in the $5 to $10 range. I've been using a toyota filter on a full flow system. Most filters are bypass design so unless you want a very large filter it's going to be bypassing when the oil is cold or higher RPM. If I go on a weeks vacation and am only on the sand or dirt I change it when I get home no matter how low the miles are.

After years of trying to keep the old original stuff alive I've finally given in. Not many places that know how machine old VW parts and it costs them time to set up for it. The case half’s one says it’s a 211 on dual relief side and 111 on 1 and 2 side. I’m looking to build a motor out of all used parts to practice and learn these Motors. Is it possible to build a 1641 out of this as he gave me heads and new 86.95 pistons and cylinders? What would be a good cam to use?
