Wow!!!! I've never heard him play before, but I'm blown away. What a clean guitarist, technique is flawless, and my god what strange-but-cool note choices. I sure as hell wish I could play 1/2 as good as that!
His point wasn't to say screw theory, but to more or less strengthen what you're already strong with and then when you're advanced in that the latter will come. For example, for me I went with technique first and as I began to polish my technique and know more styles, I was bound to run into theory and my proficiency in technique made it easier to understand because technique and theory are relatively one in the same. It works like that for almost every musician.
Dude I'm well versed in theory as well. And I'm also a musician for a living. I can very much attest to the fact that theory can hurt as well. If you stick to the rules of what many theory teachers say is "right" and what's "wrong" it can really hinder your songwriting abilities. However you do have a point that theory does help to understand things. In my view theory is a guide, not strict rules. Emil, I've looked up to you for a while now man. Taught me I don't need to stay inside a box
Thank you for replying. On the contrary, I do know about you. I know that you live in Atlanta, Ga. You play in the in the band Daath and recently joined one of my favorite bands Chimaira, first as the bass player then taking over the lead guitarist position of Rob Arnold. I know you’re in your late twenties and graduated from Atlanta Institute of Music. There you received your certificate of musicianship.
any emil fans reading this! fret12 is hosting an interview with this man coming up in a few days. stop by the channel/page to ask him ANY questions you may have. hope to see you all there
Emil and I have ridiculously similar influences. Even the whole "started through Death, heard Human, found Cynic" thing. And gypsy jazz. Love his style :D
All I got to say is that Emil Werstler is an awesome and great guitarist a metal guitarist anyway I'm sure he can play other genre's like he said he got into Jazz. I would love to learn Jazz & Blue's and go from there. 5 out of 5 for that one.
@Hellraiser7string Unfortunatly no but they offer his lessons at JamPlay.com. I think he has like thrity lesson up right now and he teaches you all of what you saw in the video plus tons more. It does cost though but the price is worth it. I'm going to start taking lessons from him at JamPlay. Hope that helped!
Don't forget: Chris Poland and Gar Samuelson had played Jazz together for 13 YEARS, prior to joining Megadeth. Chris Broderick, too, went through a MAJOR "Jazz Geek" phase.....THIS is what separates the Men from the boys. Anyway, Emil is the REAL DEAL, and he will go down as one of the GREATEST Musicians of our generation.
I think he is referring to the fact that most guitarists who are starting out do not know any theory but still have the ability to write good riffs or songs. Or he could be referring to the people who know so much theory they only think in theory and not melody.
Great player, great advice and great sense of humor. I'm a shitty player and a drunk, but his advice spoke volumes to me ... don't get all the hate. Lighten up.
@JamPlayDotCom Dear Jamplay.com, is their a lesson where Emil teaches how to turn cool fast technical heavy riffs into a song? That's the thing I'm struggling with right know and I think I'm ready to spend some bucks on it.
@hahawzz He was saying that sweeping and shredding has been done over and over throughout the years and theres only really so much sweeping and shredding that one can really do, but they cant do it as well as Paul Gilbert.
Well he is right when he says jazz is the new shred, Cynic (one of the bands that started it anyway), The Faceless, Animals As Leaders, Born Of Osiris, The Absence, Between The Burried And Me and a bunch of other bands kind of started doing that now thankfully. I kind of think the old style of soloing were getting old as Emil said, the newer stuff kind of sounds cooler to me
What so many guys like this don't understand is that what they are doing is not really music it is sport played to impress other lovers of sport not music.
@FutioN1 but if you can write class music without it, you dont need to know it. simple as. and in alot of cases, playing the "wrong" notes often sounds as cool as playing the "right" notes. thats why chromatic stuff and diminished stuff sounds so amazing and unique. because alot of this stuff is unacceptable in a theoretical sense, but without theory you have no boundaries.
Yeah, but PRS never did something like a robot guitar (nor i think they can, Gibson have the only license and stuff), it's just a Private Stock thy make for him ;D
Yeah, it's not like he's advising you don't learn theory considering he graduated from the Atlanta Instute of Music, just if you really can't get it then focus on other stuff like phrasing, tone, vibrato...
@tomschelfaut are you kidding? daath is one of the best bands ever! if you don't like their style, fine, but emils talent isn't wasted there. and if metal with jazz influences is his passion, let him do it!
lmfao his laugh; he seems to be a pretty laid back guy... but you can tell he takes his music seriously in a fun way... he gets in the zone... hes deffo an inspiring figure :3... and i love the way he goes on about the theory XD btw, what's that song he plays at 1:22? And the song at 5:27 sounds familiar but I cant place it either D: help!
Why did 149 people give this a thumbs down, he's an amazing guitarist.
honestly the best modern guitarist around
wow, this guy is. A) awesome B) Super cool and down to earth.
He has so much imagination =O
I fucking love his solos
Emil is unique and technical as fuck. I just don't understand why so many people disliked it...
Wow!!!! I've never heard him play before, but I'm blown away. What a clean guitarist, technique is flawless, and my god what strange-but-cool note choices. I sure as hell wish I could play 1/2 as good as that!
just bought all their albums guys, You should too, you will NOT be disapointed

i like those unorthodox solo patterns. inspirational

Emil is a very common Nordic name. I'm probably not the first person to mention it here, but I'll give it a try.

even if you dont like his music, you have to admit that he is a very talented guitarist..
Absolutely refreshing to see that kind of outlook and playing go hand in hand - great stuff :)
Emil and I have ridiculously similar influences. Even the whole "started through Death, heard Human, found Cynic" thing. And gypsy jazz.
Love his style :D
@BrotherofInfinity He didn't. He was saying that people should do something new, instead of doing what other people have done back in the 80's.
All I got to say is that Emil Werstler is an awesome and great guitarist a metal guitarist anyway I'm sure he can play other genre's like he said he got into Jazz. I would love to learn Jazz & Blue's and go from there. 5 out of 5 for that one.
Great! I'll definitely watch all his videos.

I fucking love his style. its so unique and tasteful!
I think he is referring to the fact that most guitarists who are starting out do not know any theory but still have the ability to write good riffs or songs. Or he could be referring to the people who know so much theory they only think in theory and not melody.
theres a reason why PAUL GILBERT is where he's at right now. GILBERT FTW!
Great player, great advice and great sense of humor. I'm a shitty player and a drunk, but his advice spoke volumes to me ... don't get all the hate. Lighten up.
I've seen Nergal wearing Daath and I never really looked into them, but damn I gotta look into this band.
Emil: Jazz is the new shred.
Me: I now officially suck at guitar.
4:48 That's ideas for one of the last album solos wich came out a year later!!
@JamPlayDotCom Dear Jamplay.com, is their a lesson where Emil teaches how to turn cool fast technical heavy riffs into a song? That's the thing I'm struggling with right know and I think I'm ready to spend some bucks on it.

Shit like him, Paul Masvidal and Chris Poland. Changed my world.

What so many guys like this don't understand is that what they are doing is not really music it is sport played to impress other lovers of sport not music.
Is it me or does the riff at 4:33 sound like the riff from shattering the skies above by trivium?
@FutioN1 but if you can write class music without it, you dont need to know it. simple as. and in alot of cases, playing the "wrong" notes often sounds as cool as playing the "right" notes. thats why chromatic stuff and diminished stuff sounds so amazing and unique. because alot of this stuff is unacceptable in a theoretical sense, but without theory you have no boundaries.

Yeah, but PRS never did something like a robot guitar (nor i think they can, Gibson have the only license and stuff), it's just a Private Stock thy make for him ;D
A flutter effect without a floating tremolo? What am I missing?
Yeah, it's not like he's advising you don't learn theory considering he graduated from the Atlanta Instute of Music, just if you really can't get it then focus on other stuff like phrasing, tone, vibrato...
