  • This week I head back to Norfolk, but to a different location, and mention how things don't always quite go as smoothly as I'd like them to - sometimes I just go home empty-handed. I also practice my alliterative skills once again, thanks to a suggestion from a viewer.

Nice job working in the alliteration. :) I really like it when folks on CZcams show/talk about the times things didn't work. Seeing a curated view of someone's photography makes it seem like it should be so easy and then we wonder why it's so hard for us.

Thanks! But goodness me yes, the failed photo shoots, the self doubt, the days when the photos are OK but you mess up the video, the crippling knee pain the following day… it’s all in a normal week, at least for me! I follow a landscape photographer chap by the name of Henry Turner here on CZcams, and I always appreciate his openness about the things that don’t quite go according to plan.

@@MarkMorganPhotography I'm subscribed to him as well. Haven't had a lot of time to watch, lately, but he does seem to be going through some things per the video descriptions.

Lovely video again 👍 I have some thoughts/questions I like to bring up. But first an advice from a man who has been struggling with back issues all his life, use your knees. By that I mean save your back and get down on your knees when setting up the composition and shooting. You can always bring something to protect your knees with 🙂 While the focus stacking technique is outstanding I have been thinking more and more about whether we should use it or not. Our eyes cannot review the exceptional sharpness we get and the very good dof it gives. I don't pretend to have any good answer to it but I like to raise the thought. I am not always sure that we should use it just because the technique exists. You really encourage us to use light which I am thankful for. After all, it reminds me that photography is the art of light 🙂 now to the question, is it a LEDA-light you use? Finally, keep up the great work 👍

Hi Dennis, glad you enjoyed the video, and thank you for your considered comment. But yes, the old knees/back question... funnily enough I was talking to an electrician recently who recommended trousers with replaceable knee pads built in, so I am on the lookout for a decent waterproof(ish) pair of those - they sound like a garment made for photographers! You may notice from my rather ambling gait that my knees are already properly wrecked, so knee pads sound like just what the doctor ordered! I appreciate your advice, thank you. Regarding focus stacking, you raise an interesting point, and I understand exactly what you're saying - it can have a definite 'look' to it, especially when shooting at wide apertures. Is it the 'right' way to shoot? Well that's a good question. I suppose for myself, I'm more interested in creating a beautiful image than in creating a record. As whacky and 'New Age' as it may sound, I try to create an image of what my mind sees rather than what my eye sees. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it! 🙂 Regarding your question about the LED, I'm not sure I completely understand. Do you mean is it an LED array, rather than something like, say, a COB light? If so then yes, you can clearly see the individual LEDs within, especially on the smaller Aputure light. That doesn't seem to cause a problem with multiple shadows as one might imagine, though. Cheers! 👍

@@MarkMorganPhotography Yes, I have noticed it and trouser with replaceable knee pads is indeed highly recommended. For the last 12-14 years I use similar trousers. I cannot be without my pair as they are very useful 🙂 Great point about focus bracketing! There is an artistic aspect of macro shooting that I relate to your excellent thoughts/answer. Since English is not my native language I apologize for being unclear. To put it simply, what lamp do you use when shooting? Not more advanced than that 🙂 Enjoy the weekend!

@@dennismwallentin296 Your English is better than some of the English people I know, so no need to apologise 🙂👍The tube light I'm using is a Nanlite PavoTube II 6C, and the smaller light is an Aputure MC. I find them both very good, and it's useful to have two different sizes. I usually use them on about 10 or 15% power, and they easily last a day's shooting. Cheers!
