Today I am shopping at two different art stores - Michaels and Sam Flax! I decided to go in and spend $50 in both stores to see which would I could get most art supplies in, and which had the most art supplies. Shall I do this again with no budget or a small/bigger budget? Let me know!

Today I am trying the infamous "jelly gouache" jelly paint which is all the rage on amazon and in the art community! This paint is almost the art supply of the century, it is so popular and pretty cheap for the quality, today I am testing them out to see what I think and if these are actually a gimmick?

I would LOVE to visit some of these big American art stores one day! Iâll have to bring an empty suitcase. Or 2âŠ
Saaaaame đ We don't have giant art stores like that here in Norway, so I'm super jealus when I watch these videos
You can also mail things back to yourself so your not dragging stuff around with you
@@jadedbelle4788 but wouldnât that be more expensive than bring a empty suitcase?
@@quintym7090 all depends on what airlines you go to and also I know some tricks of the trade because my brother travels
Lol đđ đ
The crayon pastels are amazing. I haven't tried blending them dry so it's good to see how well they work. They're made to be used with water so the watercolour paper works better than pastel, but using them dry would be good on pastel paper too. I'd go for the 2nd haul cos that's a great paint set. I was glad you picked Winsor & Newton cos Daler Rowney's watermixable oils really smell and W&N and Jackson's do the mildest ones for fumes (I tried a few cos oil bothers my chest). I don't know if special soap is essential, you can probably use anything, but it's nice to try them.
I have the whole set of Neocolor II and love them. The frugal crafter just posted a cool flower timelapse using them. She compared them to guoach b/c of the opacity and I agree. Enjoy!
The Sam Flax you visited is my local art store! Iâve been shopping there for 15 years. Iâm glad you liked the murals. The store has a contest, and different artists are invited to paint a mural, and they change every year!
You're soooooooooooo LUCKY
đ
I am new to her channel. Does she live in the US? She mentioned the Flower and Garden Festival at Epcot. IDK if she lives near here or if she was only visiting for the Festival. I recently moved to the Orlando area so I will have to check out the Sam Flax. I have never heard of it
Who painted the Dolly Parton mural? It's amazing and I want to follow them.
Great video! I love Art Supplies. I never heard of Sam Flax. Turns out there was one in NYC for 95 years & closed in 2014. I never knew. A similar video about Jerryâs Artarama or Blickâs Art Materials would be cool! Although I found that their online deals are better than in person. đ„°đš
I highly recommend the "Masters Brush Cleaner", it was the tan round container you were holding. I've had it for probably close to a decade and it still works wonders for cleaning my brushes. It's worked for all mediums I've tried so far (oil, water, acrylic). It's a really great brush cleaner and lasts a long time!
Yeah Masters Brush Cleaner is the best I've ever used.
That stuff is like magic sometimes. I had acrylic model paint stuck in some really nice high quality brushes. Got those brushes like new (except where it dried all but inside the metal), and about 20+ others were deep cleaned and I haven't even fully used up the smaller travel size I got to sample it.
I really enjoyed the Sam Flax haul mostly because there were more unique art supplies and things you wouldnât find in most places. I would definitely love to see a whole video on those wax crayon things! :)
Please please please make this a series!!!
Yes! Do this again! Itâs so fun
I have always purchased the 10 set of the Neocolor IIâs I finally purchased a big 40 stick set! Ohhh the colors! Lovely! I like how they work for large backgrounds! I use water to blend them and mixing colors. Lindsay Weirich âThe Frugal Crafterâ has some wonderful videos on the Neocolor II sticks and using them for mixed media paintings! I have also purchased the water mixable oil paints! I believe that the real key to them is NEVER USING WATER to MIX use water and soap for cleaning up! Use the mediums for thinning and mixing. You can use them right from the tube just like standard oil paints. I hope you continue this series and I am in awe of your artistic prowess! You have used new to you supplies as a true professional and accomplished artist! AND You made a video on top of it all ! Thank you for sharing your art adventures! I know that we are all looking forward to seeing how you create some more amazing artworks with these supplies!
Yes this! They are so creamy dreamy, great for mixed media!
@mjpete27 thanks for the tip on the water soluble oils, I want to try them one day just to see what its like to not have your paint (acrylic) dry in 2 seconds and that the texture is lovely. But know nothing about how to use them. So obviously I'll learn more before I ever buy any. Thanks :)
@@jadedenthusiasms I really do suggest just buying some to try them out! Windsor newton usually have the best prices and sales or the ones from Lucas at Jerryâs artArama! Good Luck!
@@mjpete27 thanks so much!! Once I'm healed up and sure we aren't losing our home, I have a list of things I slowly want to get to try and these are now at the top for sure!! Thanks so much!!! :)
OMG!!! Sam's Flax is my store!.. the owner there is so awesome and also the guy that does spray paint he's super nice.. my God if I saw you today I'll be giving you a big hug!!!
They were all so friendly!
When I worked for Hallmark, when you were at the corporate office in Kansas City, you could see they had a supply room filled with rows and paints, pens, pencils... it was so beautiful
My day didn't start out well, but watching you shop around for art supplies was a joy. Hope you continue to make more art and videos soon. They are a boost of estrogen to me and others â€
Aw I hope your day gets better! Thank you đ
have a good mindset! that will get u through the day đđ
Hugs! I'm right there with you, that is not having a good couple of days. â€
Please do more of these. Based on a comment it would be interesting to see the online vs in-store deals at Blick and Jerry's Artorama. I can't wait to see you use the pastel crayons with water, but they're still awesome dry.
Maybe see if she can do a budget haul from a dollar store or maybe a thrift shop? The thrift shop would be better for used dolls and recycling sweaters for yarn, or new makeup brushes for paint though.
The trolls with your partner where so funny đ It's so great visiting art store, wish we had big ones like Michaels here. (Netherlands). There is an art store near me, but it's a bit expensive so I still end up ordering a lot online
The neocolor 2 crayons are one of my favourite mediums! I got gifted a small tin of them with a split primaries set of colours. So much fun!
I love oil water mixable colours and they are great and the Sam flax art supplies never used those I have used oil pastels a ton so workable but they go fast
I'd love to see a video in a Blick, no matter what or how much you buy. I want to live vicariously and SEE a Blick! Lol. I always check their sale prices to judge art supply prices but international shipping means I really can't afford to buy from them.
I live near (well, a subway ride away from) a Blicks. Next time I go, Iâll be sure to film something just for you! In store prices are higher than online, fyi. Thatâs why I donât go to the physical store much.
The Neo-color ll's blend wonderfully with water!
I would love to see more videos like this too!
The Sam Flax haul appeals to me more because I love those Neocolor wax pastels. The colors really pop and it's so fun blending with water. I haven't tried using them with gesso yet, but sounds intriguing!
I love the Neocolor II, they are so pigmented and smooth. I mainly use them with watercolours. But now I definitely want to try mixing them with gouache, thanks for the tip! Iâd love to see you working with them in an extra video đ±
Sam Flax! One of the few things I miss about living in Orlando! I am so envious of you right now.
I love the Caran d'Ache Neocolour water soluble pastels. Pastels aren't generally my thing, but watercolours are, and these are so satisfying to use. So, yeah. Definitely my favourite of the supplies that you chose.
You should also try using a paint brush and water with your pastels. You can create washes and so many other interesting effects. The sky is the limit.
I like the Flax haul. Iâve heard great things about the Caran Dâache crayons and canât wait to see what you do with them.
I would adore a good two hour tour of the books in the first store đđđđđ
Brilliant would love to see You do it again with both a Cheeper budget and an expensive budget. Loved the Crayon Pastels picture xxx
The colours on the wax crayons are amazing! Can you do a full tutorial on them and how to use them best ? I mean it would also be nice to see you go through your art process
An artist that useâs the crayons you should take a look at is Ester Roi, she does rock water and flower paintings. Under her paper she uses a heated pad which melts the crayons for blending. Sam flax is a great store for more specific art supplies when I need them. They redo the murals every year I think.
Yesss! I frequent michaels and used to live near a Jerryâs Artarama but never been to a Sam Flax or Blix! Thank you for taking us with you! Yes do another video please if itâs possible! Love watching your vids đđœ and listened to all your podcasts too! â€ïžâ€ïžđšđšđš
Yay, a new Chloe video to draw to! I'm sure you're super happy to be going back out into art stores in person most of the time, god knows I missed it! All the colors, all the textures - I feel like my world wasn't nearly as vibrant for a few years!
I think I would go for the second haul because a video I once saw was trying out the water mixable oil colours and it turned out so good (in the vid) so I'm really excited to see what u can make out of them and hopefully u'll like them :) Also, those crayons look like they work so good.
anddddd Chloeee ur nails are so pretty, I love them đâšđž Did u make them on ur own or are they store-bought. If so how did u make them soo neat and clean lol, they look so beautiful â€đđžâš
I am so impressed that you started with such a small budget. Loved the video, loved the idea, thank you
Oooohh those pastels look amazing! I canât wait to see you try the water and gesso tricks with them. I need a Sam Flax near me đ Iâd get lost for hours in there.
Absolutely needed cheering up and this always does it! Thank you chloe! đ xxxx
The Neocolors are actually like Watercolour crayons. You should try using them like you would use a watercolour pencil and activate them with water :) The Colour Cave has a video on these on their channel, if you want to learn more about them :)
I enjoyed this video and would definitely like to see it turned into a series with more stores as well as different types of art stores.
Me too! Different stores and different budgets.
I just bought a mop brush, they are great for blending and texturing.
Being in australia and not having too many art stores to choose from i've loved seeing different art stores especially when i can't really experience it in person atm so thanks very much for the videos and interesting choices on art supplies but what could you do with $100? :D
I believe that Michael's now ships worldwide.
@@auzzygirl8175 oh i'll have to check that out thanks đ
YOUR VIDEOS ALWAYS MAKE MY DAY BETTER!!!! YOU'RE AMAZINGGGGG
You should really try the neo color 2's with water!! You'd be even more Amazed on how versitile they really are!! TFS Sweetie đâ€ïžđđ
Neocolor crayons are in two formulations. Neocolor original are just wax pastels, or really good crayons for adults! Neocolor II is what you purchased and they are a water-soluble medium. Both are fun. I am really interested in whether or not the oil paints have an odor. Fun video.
I actually would be interested to see which is better when you buy art supplies that is around the same thing. Like ex: Pastels, Pastel Paper, Acrylic, and Wood. You can buy whatever brand is in that category but show like which store might have a nicer set of acrylics or different sizes of wood, etc. Hard to know which is better when you are buy two different set of supplies from two different stores. Either way love the video! :)
Youâre so talented Chloe :) very beautiful little study drawing you did. Looks like you had fun making it. Your vidâs like this have inspired me over the years to try new supplies, you were like the first art CZcamsr I discovered too. Luv ya!
Oh man, I've never been in an actual art store since getting a passion for the hobby myself. I can't wait to eventually! I am perpetually window shopping at Michaels' online shop, though. Heheh.
Love this idea!!! Some art stores are EXPENSIVE! Love how you diversify your video content! Youâre so inspiring! Hope my channel can be half as fun as yours one day!
Ok so I never knew there was an art store in Orlando!! I know where I'm going next paycheck! I knew Blick was in Tampa (I think) but I don't really want to drive 2 hours there when I can order online from them. My friend is in Orlando too, I can drag her with me. Haha! I just call the Caran D'ache neocolor 2 "watercolor crayons" since that's essentially what they are. The rest is such a mouthful! I could make an entire art piece in the time it takes to say it. I have that W&N oil set too. They're pretty nice paints. Can't wait to see you do oils.
I find gentle hand soap is fine for acrylic and watercolour paint brushes (not sure about oils as I've only used them once). đ
I love the art you made. đ
How about next time low budget but for a small number of high quality items to show how far you can stretch them? đ
I love water mixable oils. They're easy to use and very forgiving. There's a bit of a learning curve if you're used to acrylics, but after that, they're a blast.
i love ur flower nails omg
i love this idea! please do this with other art stores
That piece turned out so pretty! I'm sure you already know, but in case you don't, you can add water to those crayons to make them a watercolour medium. It helps with blending. Heck, you may have said it in the video, my fiance is sleeping and I'm bedridden so I wasn't able to watch it with much volume and some of the subtitles were a little wonky, as is the usual lol.
This (Sam Flax) store reminds me of a locally owned (not a franchise) art supply store in Portland, OR. It has absolutely everything you could ever hope to want, LOL! Not cheap, but a joy to shop in!
The wax crayons are like a staple in India like 3 year olds have them they are available in in like 10 diff sizes
I use acrylic inks. I use them with watercolour. They are amazing and I highly recommend them. If you buy inks higgins is amazing!
I highly recommend Caran d'ache (sp?) neo pastels, they are blendable, and lovely colors and so smoooooth! (I like to use water with them)
I feel like a fun video IDEa would be making your own canvas and painting it. Or making paper a drawing on it
Iâd like to see a video like this but you buy the same/comparable starter products from multiple stores to see which store offers the best deals!
I LOVE the Winsor and Newton art supplies! Such high quality Products!
Yay, you made art!! đAlso, your nails are so cute! Thank you for the fun video, I can't wait to see what you make with the oils!
The pink soap is my go to for acrylic brushes, and watercolor brushes. I don't know anything about water soluble oil or wax crayons. BUT, the next time you do this, try some pan pastels, they use tools, so - not messy. Get some mixing colors, a blender pan and white. You can use water to blend for an undercoat, or watercolor and then the pastels on top. WC paper works, and a good black and white pastel pencil for details. You will love them. Open stock or beginner sets at Blick, which also has a tool start up kit. Think painting with eye shadow!
I would love to see a similar video where you buy the same supplies at the different stores as a price comparison
Neocolors are the absolute best!!!!! If you use less water to activate them it is more like a gouache in opacity. Or use more water for more watercolor effect! If I only had one supply to use it would be them! Glad you got to try them!
Canât wait to try them again soon!
I love this idea!!!
Chloe, loved the video so much..
Makes me want to step out of my comfort zone of Acyrlic. Lol
Would love to see more videos on different store's Blicks if you have one in your area and another art store in your area.
Love watching your videos!
Love to see you shop at art stores and to see you try new art mediums. Looking forward to seeing you really dive into these supplies and I would love to see you try ink one day.
Thanks for all you do!!
Oooooh! The Caran DâAche Neosticks look sooo good- Iâve tried out oil pastels and I love how they loosen up my art and something completely different comes out when I use oil pastels. But I would love to be able to blend- which I canât seem to do with OPs (maybe Iâm missing a trick) and I think the DâAche Neos might be the thing⊠I really, really want to see you video on them, and I really, really want to try them myself now! đŒ
This is so amazing well done!
Early gang!
Love watching you make art
Neocolour II are awesome. You'll love them
I'm glad that all these amazing artists like Chloe (and Chloe herself ofc) live in areas where art stores are so accessible. My closest art store is Amazon :D (I do order from art stores directly if I can though but depending on price and shipping Amazon can be cheaper for the same product)
I can't wait for the crayon pastels video! Super excited!
Loved the video! I would love to see you try to create your own âart boxâ and make something with it
WOOT! I love this video idea!!!
Love the art you made. I too have the pink soap and love it.
I really like the Sam Flax haul. The colors you chose are so beautiful!
Great idea!
Honestly, it appears that the samples haul was nice.
Also i really like that you looked foe things you *need* because it gives an artist like me an idea of ok if i need these items, i can see what store is better for me. So thank you for this again
I'm picking up those oils for sure, asking with water soluble mediums....I thought that they were way more expensive!
More please! Definitely blick art! That store is awesome đ
I think your Neo II colors are your best deal. They are very versatile and if you put enough crayon on slightly smoother paper, you can blend them with your fingers. Water soluble. Mix with other mediums.
I think this would make a really interesting series!
Challenge idea for you, go to an office store like staples, office depot, office max etc and try to get enough supplies to make a full piece of art.
Would be cool if you made a video making an art piece from each bundle and saw which one has the better final product!
"I'm Batman" đ€Ł
Well I'm an oil painter so guess which haul I preferred :P I think the surface you got might be better though, personally I feel if the surface is too smooth the oil slides around like mad. Those oil pastels looked like a lot of fun, I sort of want to get some too now.
was fun watching I prefer Oils my self but mostly just have not worked with acrylics much. i usually end up with oil paint from my fingers to my elbows
I really enjoyed seeing you look round Sam Flax, and I thought the haul was the better of the two. I like hauls where the items are sort of a cohesive set that you can use to make something with.
LOVE the first store! It's definitely an artist's dream, especially when you said the store had two floors.
Iâm excited for the oil painting video! We went to Orlando the week before the flower festival. I wanted to go to Sam Flax but spent too much $$ in Harry Potter merch at Universal đ so thank you for going there and letting me vicariously live through you haha!
I like the Michaels haul better đAlso, could you try Hobby Lobby or Target?
I'd looove to see you try those crayons in more depth! Also, loved the video! đ„°
Iâd love to see you try a challenge where you go to an art store buy all the things that are $1.00 or less and make epic art!
Pls do more shopping on a budget at different stores!
Neocolour ii by far are the best thing you bought. They are so versatile
I had to go to Michaels for art supplies this week, but luckily I didnât have to budget for brushes because this is my first time using my Artistic Bear Co brush set!
Having grown up in Switzerland where Caran d'ache seems to have made a deal with all public schools, I have developed an intense hate for neocolor crayons. Mainly for the non-watersoluble type, because I was forced to use excessive force to apply them to the paper and I have always been very soft about applying colour to paper. Now I am always reminded of hurting hands when I just look at them...
Oh gosh. Definitely the crayon haul for me. In fact I want some for myself now!
I don't have a particular haul preference because both the sets of supplies are products I would like to try. As I already have traditional oils I would probably go for the Sam Flax haul atm.
