    i was part of the team that tested these 710's. cold start to full power, to full load. in less than 10 seconds. stand right behind two cylinders back and you can feel the rumble. awesome sound. head phones on of course. temp may have been 32 degrees F and they would run this engine at full load for hours and hours. brake load. ... a few seconds, then back to full load. amazing engine 4160 V 3 phase, about 3000 kW at that time.

      In the mid 80s I was testing 645s at the DOT facility run by Association of American Railroads, these engines are truly amazing, the connecting rod setup with knife and fork is truly a marvelous design, it wouldn't works as well in a four stroke like the GE, engine, they gave me a power assembly and a 9/16" mechanical injector, the newest ones are computer controlled and use Electronic injection, and they did away with the Woodward governors

    EMD are beautiful engines, reliable, easy to work on. a power pack can be changed in 4 to 6 hrs. with a Fairbanks Morse engines it takes 4 days caused by the requirement to pull the upper crank shaft, I know I had to work on them, and there not reliable

      Yes, two stroke cycle. The engine in the video is a 20 cylinder engine (V20)

    • @Slim_Slid
      @Slim_Slid Před 5 měsíci

      The only twenty cylinder motor from the EMD 710 series was the 20-710 G3B EC which was famously used in the SD80MAC's that came from Conrail.
      The only other twenty cylinder motors were the 20-645 E3's for the SD45's,SD45T-2's,SD45-2's,SDP45's,
      FP45's,and SD45M's which were unreliable and destroyed crankshafts.
      All EMD motors are two stroke.The only four stroke motors that EMD built are the 265H's from the SD90MAC H1's & H2's.The same motors were introduced once again but as the 1010J's from Caterpillar in the SD70AH-T4's.
      Ironically,both units were unreliable.
      There also was the 210H's which became export motors much like the 265H's that actually were heavily rebuilt given prolonged usage offshore.

    • @Slim_Slid
      @Slim_Slid Před 5 měsíci

      GE is quite literally ALCO since they were acquired by them and the GE 7FDL's were really based on ALCO's 251 series.
      Which explains in many ways why they aren't mechanically reliable.Even though GE surpassed EMD on technological advancements,EMD always retained their reputation of having the best diesel motors such as the 567,645,and 710 series but just that...Modern EMD units however aren't great,only the motors.
