    Was on the wait list. Once I got my card and did some research and realized it was a sham, I shredded my card. As a financial advisor, I didn't appreciate the dishonesty. Furthermore, as someone from Tulsa, Oklahoma I'm tired of people using the name and history to line their own pockets vs what Black Wallstreet/Little Egypt actually stood for.

    This is why we as a people need to be careful who we call leaders. This shows that these folks who claim to want better for their communities and claim to be helping us are really helping themselves. Don’t push support black businesses and the need to keep black dollars in the black community if you are selling out to the highest bidder.

    You know this all makes sense now. My crew and I were ready to join Greenwood. But, we had many questions. Each of us reached out with our questions and none of us received any answers. We moved on. I didn't want to think the worse. But, it was clear to us that something wasn't right.

    Great conversation as usual. One point to make is that starting a de novo (or new) bank isn’t permitted in every state and is not easy to do. This is why most companies that want to start a bank will acquire an already existing bank. But I definitely agree that they could have utilized a Black-owned bank. But perhaps they did and the financial metrics with the other banks were better. Don’t know if that was the case, but I am a banking lawyer so I just wanted to provide another perspective on what may have happened behind the scenes.

    How does a black bank benefit black people?

    • @bert3163
      @bert3163 Před rokem +7

      Google the history of how abusive other banks have been toward Blacks, for example redlining, abusive lending practices, etc. Wells Fargo has been found liable multiple times in the last 10-15 years alone. The idealized hope is that a Black bank - at the very least - wouldn’t do crap like that. There’s more to it, but at LEAST that would be nice.

    • @jasonharris8099
      @jasonharris8099 Před rokem

      @bert3163 trust me I know the historical facts of redlining...this is the reason why we need black owned banks...but my point is do black owned banks SPECIFICALLY benefit black people? And how?...because I went to open up a bank account at Carver Bank and I spoke to the manager to ask how do benefit as a black man opening up an account in this bank as opposed to chase...they looked at me like I had 2 heads...so it seems like it was just about pandering to black folks

  • @lawrencewatkins1902
    @lawrencewatkins1902 Před rokem +4

    I hear you, but I think a problem that you're going to find is that there aren't many Black banks with the infrastructure necessary for Greenwood bank to build the technology on. So even if Carver or other Black banks wanted to be the back-end partner with Greenwood, they couldn't because the tech isn't there to get the money to flow into the bank. I know people like Ashley D. Bell have been trying to solve them problem, but we're not there yet.
    As far as the other VCs that you've mentioned, I know quite a few of them. Look at their funds and see who their limited partners are. I guarantee you that most of them won't be Black faces or firms. Institutionally, the money just isn't there at this moment. But, this is more incentive to keep building! I appreciate the convo, as always.

      I'm sorry. The first part of your comment does not makes sense. Tech is tech and nothing about Greenwood's platform is particularly innovative let alone new. There are indeed accounts with money sitting somewhere and i assume that as one can make e-deposits into Greenwood accounts from a FDIC backed bank, black or otherwise, the reverse can indeed be done too. Perhaps I am missing the real concern. Could you please clarify?

    • @lawrencewatkins1902
      @lawrencewatkins1902 Před rokem

      The problem isn't Greenwood's tech, but the Black owned banks and their APIs. Even if a startup wanted to get deposits into those banks using an app, they couldn't because their APIs aren't built out. At least, that is the reason many fintechs that I talk to give.

    Unfortunately, the commentary in this show demonstrates why one of the reasons our culture continues to struggle outside of the systematic obstacles. I don't understand why some blacks feel like they need to recreate the wheel. Utilizing established power to implement significant change is more important than a temporary feel good moment because that is all it will ever be. Every culture has roles but it seems like our black foot soldiers are overly ambitious and do not fully understand the climate they live in. We will never impact generational wealth change by just being inspiring. @@KarenHunterShow My point is has to be a collaborative effort... We should position ourselves like the military. Establish specialized groups to attack from various sides to win the war. I respect everyone's opinion however in this situation if the ultimate goal is to establish wealth, so in the short term shouldn't we utilize the system that has been created to change it from within? If they see and hear all of us coming they'll know how to counter attack before we can get our foot in the door but at this stage in my opinion some of us prefer to use the Chess strategy. The foot soldiers can be disruptive by making a lot of noise while others choose to take a different approach by establishing key positions to take power from within. But I guess in hindsight the public negativity could be a good distraction for those that choose to break down the internal pillars while others choose to protest i.e foot soldiers.
