At the bus in March (1)

- A long, drawn out (boring to some) movie of the bus and surrounding area, from various perspectives.
This is the entirely un-cut version, containing random noises of me talking to myself, etc. I did (and still do) intend to get around to editing this into a more coherent version at some point.
Every sound in this video is so delicious and wonderful. The snow crunching, the water dripping, your breathing, the clean crisp open air... so amazing. Thank you for this.
Thanks so much for posting this, and NOT TALKING. This is exactly what I've been looking for. Every other video has people talking about whatever is on their mind as they show the bus. So, thanks!
just watched this movie for the very first time. very good.. but sad. What an adventure. I hope he enjoyed the time he spent..
What I take to my heart from this video,is that we can actually go there and see and touch where a person was ,in the past.I would love to see the Pioneer Trails and see or touch an abandoned sod hut,or ghost-town.The people who went these paths were simple, ordinary folks,we don't need to herald them as heros or wise-men.They went a different path and became interesting, they interest me still.
And what a sturdy bus!
Genius!!!! Now people dont have to go there. You captured every angle , and did`nt say a word!!!! Thank You !!!!!
Thanks to mtcaving for posting this. Fascinating stuff to see it relatively unchanged after this much time.
Thanks for the visit and post.
To be honest, my fingers were getting darn cold and that fire sure helped them out. The camera doesn't have a temp readout, but best guess was around -15 during this video, was -27 that morning.
Awesome footage! Thank you so much for sharing! :)
I can just imagine how amazing it must've been in person!
Chris McCandless is the symbol for what finding true happiness is.
The stove does pretty good, I got enough heat to thaw my digits a bit but it certainly wasn't a sauna.
@ABCMATTISSOMMER There was this guy. Christopher Mccandless. He hiked up here and found this bus. Remember, this was in Alaska, so when he crossed the river to get up here, he went back and the river was too high and it was FREEZING, so he lived in this bus for a VERY long time. It brings tears to my eyes everytime I think about it.. :T R.I.P
Even though I think Chris made many stupid mistakes...
And even though there are many things about his story that have been romanticized and totally blown out of proportion...
There is just something about the whole story that moves me to tears, and I don't know why.
It's just so... Powerful? Can't you feel it?
i am in switzerland, read the book and saw the movie. I have a lot of respect for Chris, even if he done big mistake ( we all make a lot). BUT I HATE THE IDEA TO MAKE THIS PLACE A PLACE FOR TOURISM. We have to let this place like a sanctuary. RIP Chris.
this scares me, but is also extremely fascinating.
like, i guess it creeps me out and scares me that the guy who is very inspirational and left his family, life, and home for this adventure died in that very bus.
maybe it's just me, but i wouldnt want to go in there. a outside view would be fine.
but i sure do love that story.
)':
thanks for the quiet look through your camera, that was nice of you to share
chris is probably the most well known person, so many would consider it "his" spot, he was also more than likely the last to die there, although your point is right, its easy to see why it is commony called "chris's spot"
You go all the way out there to capture the serenity and stillness of such a sacred area and you can't even turn your damn radio off for 5 minutes while you videotape? Its THAT kind of crap that Chris McCandless was escaping from in the first place! Jeeeeeez!
Continued from below:
After EXTENSIVE research our conclusion is he was yearning to see life from a brand new untainted perspective, and without certain life sustaining knowledge in the surroundings he sought out-he ultimately lost his life.
Our hearts, prayers and compassion will forever be with Christopher and the POSITIVE people that he loved so dearly and who truthfully loved him.
Chris was a romantic, idealistic kid who did not plan for his trip at all and got what anyone would... Dead. I remember almost doing the exact same thing in my early 20's. Just setting out for nowhere with no plan, no gear and no experience.
I will admit that the story has impacted me, and perhaps influenced my seeking out the "bus" because it was available to me, but I do not see any of these physical or mental elements containing any of the soul of this story, and by themselves are nearly meaningless. Yet it is so tempting, for myself, and others to attach emotionally to these discrete items that together have created a type of idiom that is only "understood" by those who speak the language of this story.
Absolutely - #142, it's in the book, the movie, and the Iconoclasts episode with Eddie and Sean Penn
I would sit there and think for hours.
That is part of what piques my curiosity; in all of this....the story, the book, the movie, the bus, Mexico, SD or AK or any of the many places and pieces in between, what is it that rings true with this saga? Surely it is not any one of these elements that galvanized these discrete entities into resonance with such a broad populous.
Wow! Awsome! This also makes out for good promotion for the up coming mobie.
EXACTLY! he knew society was corrupt so he wanted to get away from it.
I have yet to see the movie about the adventures of one of us that actually lived his dream. I will buy the DVD, as I, unlike Chris, live warm and cozy all year long. I appreciate the opportunity to see his dwelling, and think that "mtcaving" documents the place respectfully and informatively.
You are welcome, and thanks for the complements.
I dont know if you realize this. But those boots with the duct tape on them were Chris'.
Cant believe they stayed there for 15 years. Wonder where they are now
to captainfalcon, I do not agree with your opinion. The stove there is for giving warm to human beings having cold. It's there to get used.
Excellent vid.Love the silence.
The scottish lion rampart flag hanging from the bus ceiling - did that belong to Chris? I don't recall seeing that in the movie. I have one flying from my house in the USA (being Scottish and having lived in Scotland for 20 odd years) so quite intrigued!!
"a man of wisdom at such a young age"? He could have saved himself by crossing the river through a bridge that was 1/4 mile away from the bus. Going into the wild without a map is utter lack of wisdow, unless he meant it as a suicide.
Incredible. Thank you for posting this.
I agree. Whoever stole the steering wheel should burn in hell. What possible good does it do as a trophy. It needs to be returned!!!
Because he only realized it at the end. Hence the tears.
great early video some of the later videos you can see where people has busted out windows and stolen the stearing wheel off the bus and carved thier name, this bus should be considered a shrine a living memorial to chris not a place where vandals can destroy such a legend.
This comment was meant for johnnok, not for mtcaving. We can be glad and thankful some one like mtcaving gives us with his vids an idea of where Chris past his last time on earth befor he met his maker.
i think its time to put a double wide trailer out there
Everything is so freah in the springtime :)
Reading the book and seeing the movie gave an insight to Christopher McCandless as being a peace loving person, a man of wisdom at such a young age, an honourable man for not bedding a girl he easily could have. He spread good will. He brought life back to some he met who had lost the life within. It made me think.Christ could have been him and if not? Then it surely showed that we, as the populace, would not tolerate Christ if He DID return. So to those who keep calling for Christ, STOP.YouSee?
Sooner or later I'll be there! Greetz, Knut Kniffte
holy shit I hate the sound of boots on that snow.
What about his dad? He goes walking down the street and then he just lays down and stares at the sky. How's he think that's going to end? The whole family was nuts if you ask me.
From Chirs page @ Wikipedia: "There was a hand-operated tram that crossed the river 1/4 of a mile away from where he fell in".
And I'm sorry - "Into the Wild"'s author Jon Krakauer has never talked to Chris about his intentions. The best he can do is guess.
God only knows if he was a wise youngster - maybe he indeed was, but I thought I'd be the devils advocate and point out maybe he was the foolest of fools.
Anyway - fool or wise, he wouldn't have died if he had a map. Take your conclusions.
But the tunes are decent at least. I explained my rational somewhere in this list of comments.
first of all, how the hell do you know that he ate 200 squirrels. As if that actually would have been documented. Secondly, starving would be a way more painful and extended way to die than the deaths that the squirrels probably faced.
jayoeyou, did you know, that you can fly with heli from healy to the bus? They will charge you $900 bucks for 4 people. You will stay there an half hour and will be flown back. That's creapy bussinness, not what mtcaving does.
And look how he ended up..death from starvation. I think we have the "stones" just not the stupidity.... Oh any by the way he did have a map....Why he didnt use the tram to get across the river is a mystery no one can figure out. Most theorize he was suicidal...
great vid:) very interesting
Honour to Cris.
I dont get a thing. At the end of the movie, it says
" HAPPINESS IS ONLY REAL WHEN SHARED", so why he decided to live alone :/?
btw respecet for him, he was a great and breave man :)
i was wondering, how that bus get there?
Christopher McCandless WAS brought up in a turmoil infested household. It doesn't matter what the guilty parties wishes to be common knowledge. They should never have had a child at that point in their relationship. When a human being has that as their fundamental base, it is only a matter of time before they make a decision based on poor judgment that will ultimately negatively affect their life and the lives connected to theirs.
But I certainly blame him for that. He made a concious decision that cost him his life.
If he was suicidal, then OK, he got what he wanted. Else, it seems pretty stupid for me. He could've taken a map, and only use it in case of a dire emergency - but he didn't.
damn, that is really sad :/
first off never live in a dirty bus to begin with un healthy
hehe, evanescence in the backgrond ruins everything
@askaryambus If you read the book you'll understand.
this is probably a stupid question but how did the bus get there?
Its abandoned from farm migrant workers.
@ABCMATTISSOMMER A man Chris Mccandless was an adventurer and he died here in 1992 but Im not to go int serious detail read the book Into the Wild or look up Chris Mccandless on google
@FRANKANATOR2000 Oh thx for the info :P
yes it is
You are welcome
What is this? Someone died in there? What is that??
Casey, I would like to retract the comment I made over 7 months ago. I would like to publicly apologize for calling you a "low life grave robber". I still don't know why you removed the panel and sold it, and I don't care. The truth is, you have kept thousands in touch with something we all feel of some significance in our lives, and our attachment to Chris. I hope the Alaskan Government leaves the bus there. But removing it will never erase the legacy of Chris, love him or hate him. I love him.
I think it's weird how you said "...a 14 teen year old..."
or epifany
Да, современный человек - жалкое создание. Завоевав и покорив весь мир, современный человек не может прожить четыре летних месяца в лесу.
That may be, I don't know that I'd survive one month out there myself.....alone.
Василий Розанов да, современный человек, действительно жалкое существо.. если меряет достижения цивилизации по "завоеваниям и покоряниям.."
Yuriy Fse Although you do have to admit, we've come a long way in the digital world...
Yuriy Fse
@honk4twiggy420 yea i did once. why
And i can prove it
Seth Ellerbee how can you prove it?
@tubef154 +1...
whats so special aboute this buss ?
How can you blame some one on this, only because he's making out there a vid for youtube? Do you know how many people come to that bus every month? Maybe you are the thief, trying to blame some one else. Shame on you!
Ok, let's recap shall we? This kid was "great" because he had the gumption to hitchhike from Virginia to this decrepit bus and starve to death? Um, which part of that was great exactly? I can respect the "voyage of self-discovery" bla bla bla but let's suspend this hyperbole of "greatness" please and maintain a little perspective.
