This confuses me so much. Here in England, we need to import around 50% of our food that we eat as we just can’t grow it here. Yet our prices are so much cheaper for fresh food than in the US and Australia, who both have higher abilities to be self sufficient through farming. I get it with Canada and Alaska but I don’t understand now countries with less import costs can charge more when the product itself cost them less. I used to just put it down to the size of them but that makes no sense really, if an avocado has to take 4,000 miles by boat and then 150 miles by lorry. It shouldn’t be cheaper than an avocado grown in the next state and going by lorry for 1,000 miles. Is it a tax thing? Like we pay higher rates of tax than the US and we receive more for it, is it that you pay less tax, which then needs to be replenished in other areas? This makes sense to me. Cost is pretty much always decided by accessibility. It’s why a pineapple costs more than a bag of apples. Like 3 times the amount. Australia exports 70% of produce, so they can afford to not have it so expensive really. The worst end of this is that it actually dissuades tourism. Higher wages for citizens means they can justify the higher costs, balances out. I planned up a mid week break, been watching too much bondi rescue and wanted to go 🤭🤣 it was going to cost less to go to Disney world. So, we never went.
Pretty much 90% of food shopping in aus is done at either coles or woolworths they have a monopoly and can extort the prices to be higher, its greed from the big companies, smaller business cant compete because rent prices for shops is also out of control, we are going to be a really skinny country at this rate.
Yes, Kristy it can be crazy. Did you take into account that the pound is worth near two times as much as the Australian dollar? At the moment one pound sterling is with $1.89 Australian. So basically if fruit for example cost you $6 when you were to buy it on your visit to Australia, you basically are only paying $3.66. You are not actually paying more. Plus Australians, our base wage is way higher than Britain so we technically are not paying more. I hope I haven’t confused you. You don’t lose at all. Who does lose though are Australians😂 who travel to Britain, why I have never been. Australian dollar is only worth a bit of 50 cents for every pound. If i was to come to Britain absolutely everything would cost me double. So your two dollar piece of fruit would cost me four. Crazy huh😂
