- My little brother was in need of a desktop computer so I decided to get a used Dell OptiPlex 9020 MT on the cheap off eBay and upgrade it. In this video I will gut the unit and install a better CPU, upgrade the PSU to one that won't explode, upgrade the GPU, upgrade to an SSD, and max out the RAM. These machines can make pretty decent units when you upgrade them.
Specs
Dell OptiPlex 9020
Intel Core i7-4790K
MSI Ventus XS OC GTX 1660 Ti
32GB RAM
Samsung 860 Pro 1TB
Seasonic Prime Platinum 550W PSU
10Gbps Fiber NIC (Mellanox Connect-X 2)
Thanks for this video :) I dont know if this might help, but I use an - old - " Cooler Master G650M " as the PSU. it fits perfectly inside the 9020MT, no latch issue or anything. It is exactly the same size as the stock PSU. My 9020MT : i7-4790 (got rid of stock fan, using a cooler master heatsink+customized led fan instead) + 32 gb ram + Sapphire Radeon R9 Nano ( I love that small graphic card !) + samsung evo SSD.
Just bought a dell 9020 w/ i7 4790 and 16mb of ram. Throwing a 1660 ti into it and a 512gb sata drive. Was really contemplating running the stock 290w psu for this configuration to avoid swapping but it's a little to close for comfort. I'd have all around $250 into it not buying a psu which is dope af for the price to performance. But throwing a cheap 400w psu into it might have to happen for peice of mind.
Not that I'd say NOT to get a better power supply, it's not as close as you'd think. All in all, between the 1660 Ti and the 4790K, you'd be at around 200 watts all in, leaving you with 90 watts of overhead. It's honestly fine. Your bigger concern is the age of the power supply. If it's within your budget, I'd upgrade it. However, don't compromise with some garbage that could be worse than the PSU you'd be replacing. People like to put those 80+ white PSU's in these, and they're honestly a downgrade in some ways, despite having more power. They're just built poorly.
@@TheGameBench It's a trade secret that stock PSUs from Dell, HP, Acer etc are high quality and under spec. It's not surprising that you get about 20 to 30% more head room on top of the spec on the label. Dirt cheap too if your were to get the same PSU brand new on Ebay.
Try not get off branded PSU’s… since most are not warranted and even if it may have better wattage it could be a unstable one causing it to age quickly or ruin other parts as it may have more output than needed
i7 4790 will that CPU go in a 990 or 3010 ?
@@robinbreeds9217 No, only second gen Sandy Bridge CPUs will work in the x90 systems. The xx10 systems will only work with second gen and third gen Ivy Bridge CPUs. Forth gen Haswell will only work in the xx20 model Optiplex.
I got a 9020 with an i5 gen 4 so I swapped that out for a i7 4790 threw in a rx6400 and a tb ssd. I like to play rts games and war thunder and it can run the game at max settings. I’m satisfied.
did you have to upgrade the psu?
@@improvezmotivationno, that GPU doesn't pull enough power to need to upgrade the psu
The design isn't "flawed". In fact, that latch is quite practical. The pc was not designed with yacht-sized gpu's in mind. 🤷🤷🤷
Whit al do respect how young is he ,16 gb is plenty even for road blocks hope your not paying for it that al said good vid.
I am having a panic attack watching you working on your PC on the carpet.
I'm gonna buy thermal pads instead of thermal paste to avoid issues like that
Great Video my ninja.
The only one I could find as in depth as this is.
The level of disgust you had for the thermal adhesive mishap…. Hilarious 😂.
My favorite part about it all is that Yahawashi over saw the build from the carpet and the heavens.

So in the end, all you really got was a motherboard? Am I missing something? The value of the used OptiPlex is in the totality of the parts.
Was there another element that made this a good value? Like you didn't just get it for cheap, but DIRT cheap (under $100?)
Or did you already have some of those compatible replacement parts on hand? Or did you get some crazy deal on a 1660, RAM, CPU, etc? Did you get resale value from the CPU or re-use value from the other parts you pulled? I mean it is still possible this was a value added project, I'm just curious because I've been spending many hours looking at different used OptiPlexes for sale and what upgrades I could make to them, and I'm crunching numbers like Kramer trying to figure out the Michigan bottle deposit scam.
Yeah, the upgrades he did were a bit overkill, but he was building it for his brother, not to flip it for profit. And hopefully he had fun building it. I'm in the process of doing a similar, less expensive build, just for the pure enjoyment of doing it.
This kid is smart good stuff kid
I want to start off by saying you have helped me TREMENDOUSLY! You are the reason I chose the 9020 to build my first PC. I'm going with the i7-4790k and RTX 2060. Should I get a CPU cooler? I'm using an i5-4590 now and I'm not sure the fan is sufficient. My new PSU will be a 650w.
The stock Dell heatsink is sufficient, it's a little better than the stock Intel one. The TDP increase is small to the i7-4790K. If you choose a different heatsink you need to watch out for the height clearance, and also note that you can't remove the back panel on this unit, you would have to remove the motherboard if you have to change the CPU support bracket. Also having a larger heatsink will restrict, the already small amount of airflow in the unit for the rest of the system including the GPU. I haven't researched putting a 3rd party heatsink/cooler in this unit and personally stuck with the stock Dell one. These are just some things you will have to keep in mind if you consider doing that. If you do install one, let me know which one and how it went.
@TheN3tw0rq I think I'm going to stick with the stock heat sink because you know what you're doing. I'm waiting on the 24 pin to 8 pin to come in the mail, should be another week. I'm having a hard time finding a i7 4790k for less than $100 but I may just have to go ahead and do it.
@@iam1nfamous Yeah my 4790K was $180 back in 2019, I haven't checked recent pricing but it's still a fairly decent CPU which is why it holds it's value. It's the best CPU for the socket.
I heard some of the bigger graphic card need to modify the ram clip. And if I got a i7 4790 should I upgrade to i7 4790k? Looks like the cpu is around $60 in my area
@@richard203oldish comment now but there is no reason to use a k over normal. I've seen more problems than its worth for a slightly faster clock speed. You will never be able to overclock it in a optiplex and you can run into all kinds of funky bugs and blue screens because it really won't like the k
Dude that PS is worth more than the whole damn system!
😁
God the carpet
We had that carpet in my childhood home in Vermont
Every time I see it I think of leaving this comment
Eh what the hay
watching this cause I am upgrading one of these units (great information by the way...) at 59:30 you are fussing with the locking tab for the cards... i have a better alternative to add and I can't get it out of my head... cut off half of the tab that is in the way of the graphics card and bam you don't need to worry about it anymore... (just wanted to add that in there for you as I faced this same problem installing a gtx 1650) now I just got to find me a new gpu because yeah it still needed the extra power... even though I was told the 1650 would run on the pci e without additional power... sheesh... oh well great video though... how do I get to be one of your little brothers so you can put together mine lol!!!
that thermal compound application was just fine.... just old and dry.
No the old thermal paste was separating it was either low quality stuff or it absorbed a lot of water either way it was bad. Thermal paste should never look like that it should be thicker.
Hey bro Im doing a very similar build i74770 32GB 500W PSU - I can get a RX 6600 cheap right now - is that overkill for this setup? Is the 4790k worth upgrading to? Thanks
I would say rx6600 is the limit for 4770
It always depends for how much you get it, if you get it for dirt cheap, yeah buy it.
@aggelossgouropoulos1917 it works perfect 1440p 60xsec
@@thomasd2695Yeah It is a great combo for 2k.
Question; is DDR3L BETTER? why did you use DDR3L ?AWSOME JOB!! I have same one and done same upgrades except for 10g NIC CARD.
DDR3L is just low voltage than normal DDR3. The motherboard has to be compatible, which this one is. It was chosen because Crucial recommended it for this system and was what they had available.
I have seen folks do that when I worked at Dell. That means that computer either failed at some time and the CPU was either reseated or replaced. Due to the compound was comes on the heatsink. I would say it was either reseated at some time or replaced. I remember they had to do a quota of units per hour. I seen a lot of stuff like that in new build EMR or refurb EMR.
I never had issues with cooling so running fans that high 100% is just a waste of Power
literally I almost never hear my fans and I get good performance and thermals
Yeah you're right, I don't know if I mentioned it in the video but I did change the fan back to normal shortly after doing the video. The TDP increase from the stock CPU isn't really much of a concern, it's negligible.
I have the 7020 so my unit can only support up 16gb of ram but that's ok and enough for getting
i have same one i5 4590 4 core 16 gb ddr3 ram 8 gb rx580 and 600 watt psu running on a 2 tb hdd and does ok i can get 90-100 fps on gta5 but i set it to limit at 60. and red dead 2 with current in game settings i get 60 fps no problem sometimes higher. cant complain
@@mike-bj4dk do you have 24 pin to 8 pin converter
@@scryptic3233 yes
That's a common misconception, and it's understandable since the Dell's own documentation even states that, but the 7020 absolutely can run up to 32GB. I imagine that Dell kneecapped the 7020 initially to give businesses incentive to buy the 9020, even though the boards are pretty much identical. Eventually they probably opened it up to 32GB with a BIOS update. Every single 7020 I've built has been able to run 32GB.

I have a few questions if your able to help me know what to buy to make it work good
I never needed to upgrade my cpu from 4770
I'm having problems with booting to desktop, how should I set bios or fix it? In your video I don't see that edit. Please help me
What was the total cost of this?
if founded bios update version do not run the bios update version when gpu paired on motherboard
How a long time work conveter 24 to 8 pin atx? For this time its working or replace again?
That's not enough thermal paste. Too little. Just a little bit more needed.
could we use gtx1660ti in dell optiplex 790 (i3 2100) and does this old pc affect gpu health
4790k runs hot you should replace stock cooler for something better, 10Gbit NIC??? explain, you could buy used GTX 1070/1080 much better than MSI ventus and propably cheaper :)
Would this pc expect pci nvme m.2?
How much thermal paste did the last owner use,ur only meant to use a pea size amount 😂
for optiplex 9020MT, memory use DDR3 or DDR3L or both ?
I have a few questions first I seen on a linus video he did a dual sata pcie adapter without upgrading the psu and a gtx 1660 ti as well and was wondering if it would be fine also how well do you think this will be able to run triple a titles also I'm planning to upgrade from my xbox series s to this mainly because I want to be able to mod and also to be able to emulate games the main games I play are souls game elden ring, sekiro, ds3 etc metal gear risinf reveangeance and Devil may cry 5 and I want to emulate a few lower end switch games do you think it would he worth while for me to make this?(sorry for it being so long)
The 1660 Ti, with a dual SATA to PCIe adapter, would be fine on the stock 290 watt power supply. As to playing AAA titles, consider the 4th Gen i7 what it is at this point... an entry level CPU. It's slower than a current generation i3, by a healthy margin. That being said, it depends on the game. It will run something like Doom Eternal just fine but it will struggle in less optimized titles like Cyberpunk. Even older AAA titles like Rise of the Tomb Raider can be a mixed bag with some areas doing great, and other areas being a bit rough.
As to the Series S, this will be a technical downgrade in terms of power, but this is capable of doing a lot more than a console, so it's it depends on everything you want to do. And for emulation, once again, it depends. Just do a quick Google search for the emulators you want to run and you can see a lot of people offering up advice. Reddit is full of threads about emulation perf.
????????? qual foi ou anterior processador? antes de trocar pro i7 4790. alguem sabe????
its better in mode legacy if used gpu
Why is the new CD drive better than the old one? Did the old one have issues or the new one is better technology?
In my experience, optical drives are usually the first components to go bad on PCs. I guess he's being pro-active. I personally wouldn't replace it. I hardly use the optical drive anyways.
What was the reason for getting th i7 - 4790 'K' version, the None K is significantly cheaper. Dell office PCs and Costco/Best Buy PCs do not overclock. Both 'K' and non 'K' version I believe runs at exact frequency(Although I remember some tried this and the K is only faster by 100mhz or a little bit higher boost speed, which is still not worth the extra money).
you can lock turbo boost at 4.3ghz on the k
and hyper threading not sure if normal 4790 does or not
@@SkyMuffinz You can do that with the non k (although lower speed by a 100mhz) by turning off speedstep.
@@SkyMuffinz Hyperthread is setting in the Bios.
Yeah their is no real reason to have the k model. The motherboards are locked down to prevent overclocking and even if you could that stock cooler would thermal throttle the cpu in seconds. should have just found the non k or a 4790.
Did you ever have to update the Bios after installing the new cpu? I am thinking about upgrading my cpu in my optiplex 7020 with a Core i7 4790K
Dell support assistant works great. Bios updates work fine. After installing your 4790k, you will get an cpu notice. Continue booting. It may not register the correct speed or model cpu. Restart in bios and exit bios. Mine runs a 4790k, but for whatever reason i had to do the bios thing.
Consider reliding your cpu as it was likely over clocked if it was used. I used a cheap delider and noctua 2nd gen paste (both inside the lid and for the heatsink)with great results despite what naysayers thought. Full load with stock heatsink runs about 172 Fahrenheit.
Been running fine for a couple months. And with the paste vs liquid metal, i did not have to worry about an electric conductive costic substance.
I've tested the 4790K on the 9020 with the A18 BIOS and it didn't need an update, but I also got a strange error on startup and the CPU had some odd boosting behavior that was easily solved by simply entering the BIOS and exiting back out.
I cant get two different gtx 1650 supers to work. What am i missing? There is plenty of power.
First question I'd ask is... are you booting in legacy or UEFI mode? I've tested one in a 9020 and there's no reason they shouldn't work as long as you've got enough power, and even the stick PSU in these is MORE than enough for a 1650 Super.
I got My Dell Optiplex 9020 mid tower with i5-4590 3.30GHz. it will compatible if i upgrade to i7-4790k? thanks in advance!!
Yes, that is what unit we are using in the video. The 4790K is compatible.
@@TheN3tw0rq i5-4590 3.30Ghz to i7-12700k or i5-12600k it compatible?
@@randolfburgos2780 Only 4th gen Intel is compatible with this unit. The best CPU for this unit is the i7-4790K.
when you buy it, it dosent come with a grapohic card will it work without one?
The CPUs by default that ship with this unit have on-board graphics. Adding a discrete GPU was to upgrade the system.
The 6 pin cable from the video card where did you connect it to?
The PCIe cable from the Seasonic power supply. I replaced the OEM Dell power supply with a Seasonic one in this video. You will also need an adapter, mentioned in the video, if you plan on using a different power supply.
Good job, I guess... But a few of your parts choices dont make sense.
Im pretty sure you cannot overclock on that chipset so why you got the "K" SKU is beyond me.
You could have bought a cheaper PSU.
GTX 1070 ti or 1080 offer much better performance that a 16 series. Probably cheaper as well.
DDR3L is pointless in a desktop.
Windows 7? In 2019? Seriously?
1) 4.00 GHz base clock vs 3.60 GHz, 4.40 GHz turbo vs 4.00 GHz with only 4 watts of additional TDP. It's the best CPU for the socket which was why it was chosen and fully compatible. The stock Dell heatsink is better than Intel's stock heatsink and will handle the 88W TDP just fine. It's not that big of a jump compared to the stock CPU.
2) I could of but I don't cheap out on power supplies. Granted a Seasonic Prime is a bit overkill for this build, I was footing the bill and didn't care. Since we were replacing the PSU regardless, put the best part that is compatible.
3) You're right, those cards perform better. I didn't price out used parts at the time. I was only wanting to put current new parts I could buy direct from Newegg. The 1660 Ti seemed appropriate for the build and at that time. It was for occasional gaming. Even the 1660 Ti had clearance issues with this case though. With this kinda case and limited airflow, you really want to stick to smaller, budget cards.
4) It was all Crucial had in stock at the time with little to no price difference. I only mentioned it because it was still compatible and would work with the system.
5) Yes really, arguably Microsoft's best Operating System. It was still supported until 2020 with ESU bumping that out to 2023. Since I operate a business I did get ESU licenses. I will do the same for Windows 10.
i couldnt see 4790K the lettre "K"
Note to self: Do not try to install a yacht-sized gpu in my Optiplex case. 😏😏😏
