  • Watercolor skills gotten a bit rusty?
No need to worry, in this tutorial that can only help!
This watercolor tutorial will show you a few awesome techniques you can use to make your rust look more realistic.
We even use gravity to help us paint this one.
This tutorial was requested by more than a few members of our instagram account @peerlesswatercolors.
We asked the artists that follow our page what new tutorials they would like to see and this was at the top of the list.
So Caitie went to work making it a reality for you.
You will use various oranges and browns to create a rust tone that is super impressive, especially on this teal background.
You will also be using colored pencils and salt to help create this weathered, organic texture.
There is no reference photo for this one so you will have to find your own off of Google.
If you want to go snap a photo of a local, rusty, landmark this would be the perfect time to use it as a reference photo!
Caitie found this photo on Kate Davidson's Flikr account.
So grab a few sheets of Peerless Watercolors, some salt, and your favorite rusted chain and enjoy learning how to bring it to life with watercolor!

I’ve never used so much masking fluid on one piece either Katie. 1/2 way through I realized my paper wasn’t Arches. 😣 It sure gives a cool rust effect. Next up Dan’s rusty 53 yr old wheel barrow. It’ll be cool. Thanks Katie & Dalton & co. The rust rages on.
