A few Saturdays ago I was driving long, minding my own business listing to BBC 3 radio channel and this song came on, it stunned me with its sheer beauty yet sadness, I was hoping that I could remember a little about the name of the singers or song title so I could look it up when I got back home from my work, I replayed the radio program that I had been listening to and found this song. I have listened to it many times since and it still sends a shiver down the back of my neck, A song about a great tragedy and captured in tune and worse by the very great Anthony Rafferty, a man who my grandchild is named after
This lamentation remembers the curragh accident that occurred on lough Corrib. The craft sprang a leak and all in the boat drowned including a couple who were to be married that day. Anthony Rafferty, the blind bard of Mayo and Galway very poignantly captured the sad plight of the people of Anarch Cuain on that fateful day.
Thank you for this explanation.
Thank you Thomas for this information, it makes this even more special, it is a golden nugget of a find
Thanks James, I had the privilege of learning these tunes in Coillte Mach, Mayo, the birthplace of Anthony Raiftery.
Wow. Thanks for the history! What a sad song.❤
Gorgeous and amazing ever thank you all Lovely ever thank you all
ooh, thank you so much for this absolutely wonderful music!!!!
It takes my heart back to the early celtic times of Ireland.
Mine to
Me to
utterly breath giving...
Stunning sad beauty
Touched my heart, thank you!
Absolutely wonderful🙏🏼
So beautiful, thank you.
Ireland my babe!
Such a hauntingly beautiful lyrical lament- wonderfully sung!
Maith go leor, go halainn ar fad
Go hálainn ❤️🇮🇪
Tathachadh ach àlainn. Le gaol bho Alba x
A hauntingly beautiful lament, the words were written by a man called Antoin Raifteiri, the melody is attributed to a Garda from Headford, although there seems to be some discussion and debate as to who actually wrote the air....
A very poignant lament, beautifully performed in the traditional style.
beautiful!
Amazing stuff, need stuff recorded on any platform would love to hear an album
They have an album on Spotify now! 😊
That dude can play the harp! Nice!
I was hoping to either hear Enya, Orlando, Rachel or Melinda here, but still pleasant!
You are spoilt with brilliant music
It fills my heart with such joy to hear and know that young people of this caliber are carrying on the tradition. I hope to the gods above that they haven't been jabbed up with the poison sauce.
Oh ratty, we've all drunk of one poison or another. Beauty is ephemeral and yet far too tenacious to ever die. Don't stress about it so much. We can be out here all made afraid by the conspiracy mongers, but the smartest and best of us will keep making amazing shit.
@Andre Blue she's right u no
I hope so to many have taken this lightly but we must keep going
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I stumbled across this completely by accident, a very happy accident, thanks youtube.
A few details in English re where this was recorded would have been nice for those of us not blessed with the Irish.
Am I alone in thinking it unusual to see a man playing the harp? For some reason I do not recall seeing one before, for which i cannot think of any good reason why it should be so. Cracking playing and vocals, well done all.
Same here... I don't remember to see a man playing harp.
it was filmed in the old protestant church in st gobnaits graveyard in ballyvourney in the muskerry gaeltacht in cork :)
@@johnnybrau Look up Michael Rooney. Harpo Marx, Patrick Ball, Laurence Naughton-Furr, Andrew Lawrence-King
Happy to hear thus lament
Go hiontach ar fad 👏👏👏👏👏
Anach Cuan lyrics..
Má fhaighimse sláinte is fada a bheas trácht ar
an mhéid a báthadh as Anach Cuan.
Mo thrua amárach gach athair is máthair
bean is páiste atá ag sileadh súl.
A Rí na ngrásta, a cheap neamh is Párthas,
nár bheag an tábhacht dúinn beirt ná triúr?
Ach lá chomh breá leis gan gaoth gan báisteach
is lán an bháid acu a scuabadh ar hiúil.
Vár mhór an t-ionadh os comhair na ndaoine
bhfeiscint sínte ar chúl a gcinn?
Screadach is caoineadh a scanródh daoine,
gruaig á cíoradh is an chreach á roinn
Bhí buachaillí óga ann, tíocht an fhómhair,
síneadh ar chróchar is á dtabhairt go cil
Is gurbh é gléas bpósta bhí á dtórramh
is, a Dhia na glóire, nár mhór an feall?
Loscadh sléibhe agus scalladh cléibhe
ar an áit ar éagadar is milleán crua,
mar is iomaí créatúr a d'fhág sé ag géarghol
ag sileadh is ag éagaoin gach maidin Luain.
Ní díobháil eolais a chuir dá treoir iad
ach mí-adh mór a bhi sa gCaisleán Nua
Is é criochnú an amhráin gur báthadh mórán
is d'fhág ábhar dóláis ag Anach
Go hálainn ar fad
I agree with you very good
Wunderschöne. Voller Gefühl vorgetragen. Ich muss suchen, ob es irgendwo den Text des Songs gibt.
Absolutely beautiful except for that guy coughing in the background.
Where was this???.beautiful!
Dreamy sounding song and harmony, although I understand it not. The thoughtless coughing person should have been tossed out.
