@@JurassicParker13 He took BP at Yankee stadium. He asked his manager (who used to be a coach with the Yankees) where Judge and Stanton hit their home runs during BP. He wanted to hit them farther than they did. According to his manager, Ohtani hit way longer than both.

I could be wrong, but perhaps it was going to rain and they didn't want to drag the hitting dome out if it was going to? That's my best guess

Usually the hitter cages have a target at the back for hitters to throw at. But since that not out there the catcher is just a target for the pitcher.
