Torso S4 Exploratory Longform Session (No Talking)
Vložit
- čas přidán 14. 08. 2024
- This is a long form exploratory session using the Lyra-8, Torso Electronics S4, and my own personal field recordings and samples.
This is not to be a polished pieced, but merely showing some of the workflow and sound manipulation capabilities in a live environment.
the mix is a bit muddy compared to my usual samples, and that was an issue using a sub bass field recording that was too present and caused the mix to be a bit muddy.
The next piece will be much closer to my usual standards.
00:00 Lyra-8 drone live processing
00:40 addition of field recording sample
05:10 intermission/field recording processing
07:14 Lyra-8 piece 2
13:40 intermission
15:40 polymode set up/midi controller assignment
16:25 polymode sample selection test
20:32 poly mode cinematic (Strega Sample)
22:32 Outro polymode jam
this was a really beautifully textured and layered piece of music.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. The S-4 is a lot of fun with certain work, and I am confident it will get better as it matures.
Holy sh... at some point some worms overlapped! I didn't expect it! Well done Abys, that damn sampler sounds awesome!
Hey Maurizio!
For people like us and artists in our genre, this thing is awesome. It's a textural machine.
The next mix will be much much better as I was trying to use a seismic mic recording, and I ignored my level meters (which I never do...)
This mix was straight muddy due to that oversight.
The next recordings I'll be much more diligent about my mix.
This box is really limited and sounds "same-ish" no matter what you feed it. I am hoping that more material engines get added so there is more flexibility.
I do love how cold and sterile it sounds, as that allows me to color it in post if I feel so inclined.
In a live setting, the output gain is very very quiet, so I'd recommend an end of chain unit to give it a boost, the onboard utilities need a lot of work.
sweet can't wait to get the s-4
It's definitely a great sonic exploring kit. I originally didn't think I'd use poly mode, but I am gonna be using it a lot as it's great for creating new timbres from pre-recorded samples.
It's still really undercooked and a bit buggy right now, but the next few firmware updates will add some much needed quality of life improvements and stabilize it.
Awesome piece! Sounds like you’re getting the hang of Lyra and S4. Sublime combo! 💙💙
Thanks, man! I think around the 20-minute mark is where things started to click, and I was able to get some really good stuff out of it.
I'm gonna work with the polymode a bunch more today with the Lyra, but I'm not using any sub-bass audio and I'll see what comes out. I jacked this mix up so bad it sounds like I am recording my own work from 4 years ago. I can clean up the gain staging and internal mix before I lay anything down.
This device is cold and sterile (which I personally like) but a lot of people are not happy with it and orders are being canceled lol
Im thinking of buying the Torso S4 to pair it up with my Digitone. This machines capabilities are exactly what i`m looking for sonically. Beautiful video + powerful sound
I am glad you dig it!
I really like my S-4 in its current firmware, and that will continue to improve and get more powerful as it matures.
It's not quite ready for musicians who rely on musical timing and sequencing duties as there is a lack of full midi implementation. There is no clock or transport quite yet, but it sounds like June is when those features will be released.
what an amazing device!.. such a great idea to join them! I like it!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I am getting prepped to record another session here shortly
perfect combo! perfect music!
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I know the audio I produce isn't exactly music, but I am stoked to know it is appreciated all the same!
I hope you have a good rest of your day, and thanks for taking the time to listen to this piece!
Really cool looking device 👍👍 lot of possibilities
Absolutely. This is still severely underbaked (maybe even pre-beta) on the OS and features, but even in its current form, it's a powerful unit for the audio I like making.
It will mature and improve into something special, but it's not quite ready for primetime. It wouldn't be a fun experience for a traditional musician. For a drone artist like me, this is sick haha
@@AbyssalPantheon well, you make the journey of exploration enjoyable to observe 👍👍
I am very happy to hear that! If you enjoy darker sound design and "primordial sound" then you'll probably enjoy some of the work I do.
There are also a few artists in this genre that I can recommend if you enjoy dark ambient and textural works
sheshhhh... this is out of this world. is it only your lyra 8 into the s4....
It's my Lyra being processed by the S-4 primarily. I also have some field recording samples of mine loaded into the tape machine and polymode.
Outside of the initial sound from the lyra and raw sample files, everything happening is from the S-4's sound engine
this seems like it would go over well as a live performance. I once saw Michael Northam do a live ambient show that had a similar vibe. Also, listening to your work, I am often reminded of the channel from Sebtic Smile, he sometimes posts live performances from an open mic where he lives, in England, if I'm not mistaken.
I think this box is going to be a perfect live performance glue box. It will need many many improvements and bug fixes before I'd ever consider using it for that purpose. For an ambient or experimental set. This thing rips in its current form, but it's not ready to be relied on. There are button Combos I have to avoid. Otherwise, there is a high chance of a reboot, and this doesn't save settings/projects on close.
I think in about 6 months' time, it may be ready for the average person. Right now, it may be a frustrating experience for some.
I personally just like digging around for sounds and textures, so I get lost in this thing pretty easily. Once I can sync this to a clock, I'm gonna start branching out a bit with it, and it's gear pairings.
I have heard of Sebtic before, but not in quite some time, I will definitely check him out!
13:44!! Right on man. Very intresting
Glad you dug it! I think the outro section was where it started clicking a bit more. I've been slowly finding the sounds and textures I've been looking for haha
Can‘t wait to get mine under the fingers….sounds amazing🖤…how long can be a sampler per track? Greetings and have a good start into this week….🖖👽
Hey Somnambule!
I'm not 100% sure on sample length, but I will tell you that one of the field recording samples I used was over 10 minutes long, and the other around 3. They are stereo files and at 24 bit 48k resolution.
Eventually, this will be able to stream over USB/storage drive iirc so sample length may not be an issue.
Have a good start to your week too!
Unpolished is good!
I'm glad you can appreciate it! Thank you for taking the time to listen!
The main reason why I mentioned unpolished is that the audio quality in this piece may not be indicative of the actual audio quality of the S4. I know better than to allow sub-bass to be boosted, and I ignored my own workflow haha
Once I figure out the best gain staging settings, my future S-4 works will be much more detailed and accurate to the audio quality :)
I like authentic mistakes. It shows our human side! ❤
@@jaixiviii I'm glad you feel that way, and I hope I make more pieces you enjoy :)
What your opinion on it as sample mangler vs real time effects? Seems like you utilize it well for both. Thanks.
I think it works well for those focuses. It's missing a lot of features right now.
The S-4 is in a rough spot at the moment. I primarily use it as a sample player for my field recordings and generally process live input audio.
In my opinion, I would wait for a while before looking at this. We essentially paid 900 bucks to beta test this thing.
The granular engine is very limited in its current form, but with creative modulation, it can create all sorts of incredible textures, and is an excellent improv effects unit
@@AbyssalPantheon Thanks for the feedback. I def hold off for now but loving what you are doing with it.
Thanks, mate! That's a wise choice, to be honest. A part of me wants to make a video talking about the reality of the situation regarding the S-4.
New orders have been cut off, batch 2 has been delayed, and several of the buttons on the face have no funtionality at all. Dont bother trying to save projects. They get corrupted every firmware update. Right now, with the latest firmware, I can't even save or load projects at all.
I haven't seen any negative coverage on this device, and it rightly deserves a lot of poor press. I am gobsmacked they win any awards at all.
When it comes down to it, I feel misled and lied to about what I was purchasing. It wasn't a cheap purchase at all, and I'm unsure if it will keep a spot in my rig.
