That distinction, to me, makes about as much sense as "A tomato is a fruit, not a vegetable." Technically, yes, it is true, but to 99% of the people it makes little to no difference, and they wouldn't put a tomato in a fruit salad. We understand how the country works, and virtually everyone that has ever spoken, written or talked about our country calls it either "a democracy" or "democratic," just as people routinely call a tomato a vegetable. I have yet to run into anyone in my 50+ years who cares about such a pedantic distinction, aside from those who for some reason feel the need to trot that same tired statement out as though somehow, the whole fabric of the country is threatened.
