This is one of the best tutorials I've seen in a while, in any subject. It's very clear, without any drama or click-bait. It covers the expected edge cases, it's pragmatic and provides examples. Thanks guys!

This is excellent advice. Unfortunately, what I've discovered is that when I've brought my camera to certain sports events where I live (central Connecticut), for example an AHL hockey game and a semipro soccer match, I've been told I can't bring my gear in. Apparently, they consider that any camera with a detachable lens is professional gear. (I wonder if this also has something to do with the recent Name, Image, Likeness concept.) Since I'm only a hobbyist and have no press credentials, I'd need to use my iPhone, which is a nonstarter for me. To me a smartphone camera can be a useful device, but when I am trying to take pictures, I prefer to be looking through a viewfinder.

yeah, agree that smartphone photos aren't a substitute for a real shooting experience. I would recommend that you keep searching for other events and get in touch with organizers ahead of time. Find a situation where your photos could be a win-win for participants or clubs, etc. it's out there I assure you! 👍

For panning, using a monopod can help add a stabilizing fulcrum point as long as you have a decent working distance. Picking angles where cyclists turn towards the shot will also help to limit focus racking. Also, choosing the proper IS stabilizing mode plays a part; on modern Canon lenses that would be setting 2

Great informative video, thank you. I'm shooting some pics for my cycling club this weekend and haven't tackled this type of photography before. Feeling a lot more confident after watching this.

I've just bought my first ever camera since I started mobile photography and your explanation for this kind of topic is spot on. short and simple and direct to the point. This will help me a lot. Thank you so much for this information
I'm doing sports photography as well, my subjects are mostly cyclist and it's not easy to get a nice sharp shot if you're a beginner using a dslr

    Hello how are you?
Congratulations on the video, I just found it in a CZcams search.
Can you help me understand something?
How can I, a Brazilian photographer, work as a freelancer in sporting events such as races, obstacle races, trail races, etc.?
Is there any company that hires foreigners to work as freelancers? If yes, what do you need? My intention is to start at the beginning of 2024 at sporting events around the world.
My dream is to be a sports photographer around the world covering this together with a team.
It's a shame that here in Brazil we don't have much information about access in America and Europe.
I thank you for your attention.

Hi Sir and thank you for this video. Im having some problems. I have been filming for about 15 years now. But in the last 7 years with a GH5 and now the S5II. I film two groups. Wild life for our nature channel and Rc airplane for this. I have posted comments in many channels but do not get any replay. My biggest problem is to use correct settings for AF while filming model airplanes. i often give up and just shoot manual but then without zooming in. My wife is my best friend and she helps me filming when i fly but sadly with incorrect settings the planes is often out of focus still when in auto focus. Can you or someone plese help me figure out the best settings?? The GH5 with the 12-60 2.8f was no problem cause it acted as par focal with this lense when i set manual focus. Greetings from Bengt

Yeah, I can imagine that indoor semi-pro events are challenging that way, but maybe there's something else you can practice on. Hockey is extra difficult due to the relative low light inside the ice halls. It's a great sport of course and getting nice shots would be very rewarding, but I think its a humbling experience for most hobby photographers (for what it's worth). Best luck! 🎉
