I have a really important question. I’m starting as an ER nurse in a couple of weeks. What I don’t understand is the difference between a nurse and a doctor in the ER room because much of what you speak about here seems to be the doctor’s role. Please could you expand on this. Thank you for your videos.

Great question! So the doctor or provider (PA or NP) is the responsible person for officially diagnosing and ordering medications, radiology, needed lab work etc. As the nurse you will be responsible for carrying these out, but you need to also know how different diseases are treated and what type of work up is needed. For example, providers are also human, what if they order the wrong medication for your patient thinking it was for a different patient? And you give it, and you cause harm? Who’s at fault? At the end of the day, as a nurse you’ll have to be able to critically think and be able to determine that a treatment for your patient is safe! Of course, there’s multiple ways to do something and it’s not your responsibility to decide how it’s going to be done, but you should at least have the fundamental knowledge to know that something is safe. The more you know, the safer and better a nurse you will be.
