Hi Ken. Awesome training video !! I have a question or two. Where it asks for a "Partition Ceiling" data: If I have a attached garage the walls between the house and garage are what they refer to as a partition wall, correct? Now for the partition ceiling area, are they asking for the garage ceiling area ? I am confused with this one since I have a 4 car garage and the ceiling is really big. Also was wondering if the J manual lists ICF walls and ductless systems like mini splits ? What would I enter for the duct detail sections?
yes on house to garage wall is a partition wall. yes on ceiling in garage, that is from a conditioned space to an unconditioned space and a partition ceiling. on mini split there is no duct loss.
Ken Training, question for you on this video. Just for an example/generally so I know moving forward. When discussing the overhang on the plans it says that it is 12 ft 8 inches long, but when you put it into your spread sheet you put 12.8 FT. 12 ft 8 inches is technically 12.66 ft. Do we need to adjust for the correct decimal value, or does the system read 12.8 ft as 12 ft and 8 inches? If it adjusts for it how would you input and overhang that is 12 ft 10 inches or something of that nature?
Ken, can you try a few room-by-room examples with the ACCA Manual Jae Speed Sheet in (freedom respecting) LibreOffice Calc software? The summary page is not populating with data for me when I tried it from LibreOffice Calc. The software developers would really like to know any bugs or incompatibilities that are found but I don't have enough experience as owner-builder of my home to describe what the problem is exactly, and the developers are experts about spreadsheets but know nothing at all about Manual J.
Why did you go up in size on your heating to a 40,000 BTU unit.
Great great video. I have more rooms than fit in the glass schedule (and other tabs). Much of the workbook is protected. What is the password to unprotect them so I can add more rows. Once again, great great material
ACCA has the password, I do not. I would recommend you save a portion of the house as one file and then the remainder of the house on a second file. then add it all up to get your equipment sizing.

So on the infiltration, the box that allows you to choose Tight, semi tight, average, ect. Is that talking about the chimney or how leaky the home is based off a blower door test?
not the chimney, it is based on either year of construction or blower door test. My house is 43 years old and is a very leaky home due to general construction practice back then.
@@KenTraining what are the numbers for each selection? And are you able to override with an actual number if you were to run a blower dorr test…
@@thefred0215 you are correct there is no manual override to input your numbers. All I see is the drop down selection.

@@thefred0215 I don't have that info. But I can tell you my house if loose and is 43 years old in Southern California.
It is so clear for application of Manual J. I have question for calculation of "Total Net Floor". Example: Bedroom No.1: W= 13'8" x L=12'8" >>> "Total Net Floor" should be S= WxL = 13.6667 x 12.667= 173.12 (sft). Your calculation is S=13.8x12.8=176.64. Which is correct ?
Sorry I am not remembering as this was some time ago. either way, the numbers are so close it will not matter. you do want true length x width.
how is everyone handling hallways or a bathroom that does not butt up against an outside wall?
Ken Thanks for putting this presentation together. I seem to have a repetitive issue with the Manual J speedsheet.
Each time I download the speedsheet i get a warning on the sheet indicating that there may be one or more circular references. This is prior to doing any input or manipulation of the speedsheet. I'm wondering if you have ever seen this happen. Very frustrating. Any insight you may have would be incredibly helpful. Thanks much

@@KenTraining Thanks much. Your spread sheet. It did work. Is there any reason the result for heating and cooling would not be applicable for sizing a mini split system?
@@joe800096 Sizing should be the same for a mini split. Let me know how your project turns out. Do you like the Mr. Cool Mini Splits or who do you like?
@@KenTraining The reason for that question came from one of the disclaimers on the front end of the speed sheet. It states use is for single zone heating and cooling.
Im not partial to any one manufacturer. These units are likely made by the same few producers anyway.
I'm right in the middle of doing manual J on my own home, to replace the crappy system that was put in this track home under "code". Only yesterday did I find out that the ACCA speed sheet is basically useless by itself and one still needs the full manual J program to look up U values. Nice going ACCA. Duh! Anyway you've just showing that manual J for selecting a system is basically a waste of time. And picked hardware that is twice the size the calculations recommended. After all for a home my size 2,700 sq ft I pretty much have two choices. A 4 ton on two zones or a 5 ton one zone. And then damper the system once installed for a room adjustments. However, I am redesigning the ductwork so I'll still have to do the speed sheet to get the correct CFM for each room. So at least MJ8 has that value...

@@KenTraining Hi Ken, I already had Cool Calc. The software is very inaccurate and has lots of bugs which they admitted too. They were descent enough to give me a refund, in my case. This is why I am working thru MJ8ae. I ran into the same issue you did, with not enough rows or the windows until I realized I needed to group them by the Glass Sched tab first, for the window height and eve overhang H-X-Y. That freed up about 3 rows. Most homes built in the last 40+ years will have the same window and sliding door fabrication. In my case, all dual pane, vinyl. So, all the same U value with the blinds at 45°. Other than the H-X-Y stated and Glass Direction, MJ8ae only cares about how many total sq-ft to allow for in which outside wall. That brings me to my question. You subtracted the window and doors areas from your walls before entering a value. Are you sure this is correct? The CZcams video attached to MJ8ae does not mention that this is required. I haven’t read all 628 pages of my MJ8, but it would seem the MJ8ae spread sheet would take this area into account in the background calcs. I suspect this is wrong on your spread sheet and it would explain why your total BTUs for the home is way off from the rule of thumb you would actually use to pick the unit and why the cooling BTUs are too low for Texas. Anyway you did a great job all the same. I know that is a load of work to put together. I like your cheat sheet. I have a similar one, but I would use your one next time. Cheers Grant
@@grantlloyd23 I was able to confirm you need to enter the net wall values in MJ8ae. I was able to confirm this in 2 methods. 1. At the top of the column it states to enter the Net value. In addition to that, I took a filled out MJ8ae form and subtracted out the windows and the wall heat load values did not change. Had the excel sheet taken the window area into consideration this number would have changed.
@@KenTraining You are right Ken. (Not the way I would have use an Excel spread sheet today. I would have had it do the work, but I think MJ8ae has been around a while). In MJ8 pg 506, A7-8. It says; Net wall area (SqFt) = Gross wall area - Window area - Door area. Hard to argue with that ☺. So thanks for following up, correcting me and getting me back on track. I’m in California BTW, East Bay area. It gets stinking hot here. AC seems to run okay but the ducting is pathetic. I am going thru this to find the correct CFM values for each room. Then I will rip out the nasty flex hose spider system and redo it in insulated sheet metal with main trunk system and test that, before I start replacing the mechanical units. Cheers.

@@KenTraining your method has me intrigued now. I have the sheets filled out with your video help and U values. I would like to follow up with the correct U values for how my home was constructed. I was planning on ordering the 8th abridged if that would match your table references.
@@rogeremeadows as far as I know you only need the abridged version. I only have the full version so I can't confirm this.
@@KenTraining thank you. I finished the speed sheet with your U values. Will get the 8th edition and do some updates. Checking my data now, for some reason the Manual J is showing low for cooling tons for what I actually have in the house. Interesting project and appreciate your work.
