- As noted in one of the last videos, there are far too few model railway layouts that feature trams and streetcars. The effort to build model railroad layouts for trams is difficult, because - in addition to the city and its buildings - asphalt roads and overhead lines must be added. If the catenary of those model train layouts is also electrified, then true works of art will be created. Therefore, dioramas for trams, streetcars or trolleys are normally very small.
But in railway modelling or model railroading, there are exceptions: The Northern Virginia Model Railroaders have built a mesmerizing miniature world for trams and streetcars. The club layout features the “Blue Ridge Traction, Power and Light Company”, a fictional trolley line running along the main street of Spencer and crossing the neighboring towns of Majolica and Statesville. The tram line features powered overhead wire, designed for trolley poles in downtown Spencer and pantographs on branch lines. Recently, club members have implemented a computerized block detection system for model trains which can run a lot of trolleys automatically.
In Pilentum’s cab ride video, we enjoy a trolley journey along long main roads, winding urban canyons and commercial areas. Those who want to discover this streetcar layout in person can visit Northern Virginia Model Railroaders’ club layout twelve times a year when it is open to the public. The club is headquartered in the historic train depot in downtown Vienna, Virginia. Weekly and monthly, there are member meetings and operating sessions. Of course, new members are always welcome.

This is one of the nicest trolley railroad layouts I've ever seen. With live wire overhead it makes it very unusual and quite interesting. I also like the live view inside the tunnels to see how that layout was built. Great job to everyone.
Nice to see a traction layout and traction equipment for a change. I am a traction fanatic. I LOVE the realism in your fantastic layout. It would've been nice to see some traction equipment occasionally passing on the left. I hope you keep showing HO traction videos. Traction is the least popular of the hobby...it needs more exposure. ❤️ 🚊 ❤️
I missed the old trolleys. I grew up riding them in St Louis, Mo. in the 50's. Great layout!

All I could think of while watching that first street-running part was "Don't fall off the edge of the world! It is a long way down!" The giant "Watch Your Step" sign only helped. 🙂
That sure is a nice layout, especially the functional overhead wire. The only thing that had me a little confused was the left-hand street running at the end, since the US drives on the right.
We usually do run on the right hand side of the street as that is how the automated program is set up, but in this case it was filmed using a manually run train and they didn't change the switch.

Really nice, well done layout. Just one thing though: why was the tram driving on the left in the last part, especially as there was a clear track on the right, where it should have been?
Probably because of the camera.

The first question that came into my mind watching this was how do you make the roads seemingly all in one piece like that with no visible panel joins. Most especially I was expecting to see joins in the "filler" section between the rails - but there were none. How is that done?

For these cab ride videos, have you ever thought about putting the cameras in different places? Like, say, a side window or even the rear?
I've been wanting to model a trolley system on my layout for years, but i have no clue as to where i can find the proper girder rails/switches for the trackage.

The problem with US traction modelers is that they inly model the past. Very few model the present day LRT lines. The excuse that I hear is that the modern LRT lines are not "real". Quite honestly, I think that these modelers are suffering from an acute case of Nostalgia-induced Blindness.
