I'm in my 60s. Unfortunately, it has become clear that present day citizens of this country are no longer like the citizens of the country I grew up in. This observation applies to members of both major political parties. I have no data to help explain what I believe.
What's going on today is neither new nor the responsibility of one or another politician. Since my childhood, US citizens have become so angry, violent, and unforgiving. I believe 3 factors have contributed to this degradation. 1) Political talk radio/TV have helped turn politics into a game of team against team where the other team must be defeated. 2) Some social media platforms are managing communications to excite and inflame users in order to generate greater profits. 3) 24 Hours news services need to find/create issues and draw viewers so they use language to hype stories and keep viewers interested to fill the available time.
For years now, when appropriate based on the content of a conversation, I have been sharing my opinion that hating other citizens because of their political affiliation or views is anti-American but, for the most part, people just look at me like a crazy old man in a cave.

It's not going to sway the idiots who go to Trump rallies but it might strike a chord with Americans who think of themselves as decent people but still vote Republican.
But to be perfectly honest, you're right, it's unlikely that people who still identify as conservatives are going to suddenly see the light.
It's all down to conservative media.
All the hatred and division is being driven by conservative media and that's where all the Republican politicians get their talking points from.
Unfortunately for Max and the country and the rest of the world, it's too late.
Republicans blew their chance to save the party from the extreme right-wing lunatics when they nominated Trump in 2016.
At that time I was actually advising Republicans do what Max is telling them today. The difference is that my goal back then was for the GOP to take their party back and today it's about saving our Democratic institutions.
Max needed to be saying this 5 years ago when it was totally obvious that the Republican party had gone off the rails.

Great conversation, and it touches a bit on what gives me hope, having observed American politics for 40+ years now. The Republican party used to enjoy the reputation as the "pro-business" and "good economy" party, and many people had the notion that the Democratic Party was good for "helping" minorities, but wasn't so good for helping people get rich. As I see it, if America has any religion we all share it's the desire to get rich, or put a little more innocently, to make sure our kids get a good start in life and have a better life than we had. What is so striking to someone as old as I am is to see the Republican party abandon the reputation as the party of a good economy and take on the reputation as the party that will spoil everything so that the same people who have been in charge for decades, can remain in charge. To be anti-education, anti-science, in the modern world, is to leave the reputation of "the party that creates prosperity" to the Democrats. Trump and his rage may win the hearts of 20% of the country that hates to see anything change. But that kind of rage can never win the votes of the 40% of the country in the middle that just wants to do well in life. Combined with the, say, 30% of the country that thinks politics should mostly be about securing rights for abused minorities, that's a combination the Republicans cannot possibly beat, and eventually they will have to come to their senses, after a giant loss, probably in 2022 and 2024 or both. Trump and his minions make a lot of noise, and the media loves noise as it gives them something to cover, but they have no real power outside of a few very poor areas of the country which are going to struggle anyway.

The first time El Trompo lost the popular vote, it was by 3 million votes. Four years later, he lost again by 8 million votes. If the progression is flat, his next popular vote loss should be by around 13 million. If it's exponential progression, however, this works out to about 27% per year increase in voter dissatisfaction with El Trompo, so his loss may be by 20 million votes or more. @joe smath An Economist Magazine analysis determined that the voter fraud rate in the US is 1/30000 of a percent. That is less than 1 fraudulent vote per 1000000 voters. With 150000000 voters, that is 150 fraudulent votes. Not all fraudulent votes will be cast for the same candidate. The Heritage Foundation has a database listing 1200 voter fraud incidences since 1980. Therefore spread across 10 presidential elections, that equates to 120 per election. Voter fraud does occur, but the instances are vanishing small.
Each of the 50 states has its own voting laws and systems. This is called the Federal system. This makes “hacking the system” in any meaningful manner nearly impossible. This was stated by Rick Hasen, founder of the Election Law Blog, in his interview with NPR. (www.npr.org/2016/10/25/499274789/rigging-an-election-its-not-so-easy-voting-law-expert-says).
The same electoral system that elected Trump in 2016 has elected Biden in 2020. The same system also elected Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham without multiple recounts or allegations of fraud. The US election system is highly accurate with the highest levels of integrity the world has ever seen.
If you have evidence of any of this, let us see it. Publish it already. Judge Bibas pointed out that despite the campaign’s speculative claims and fiery rhetoric, it never alleged - let alone offered any evidence to suggest - that any vote had been deliberately cast illegally. He stated in his ruling “Calling an election unfair does not make it so”. “Charges require specific allegations and then proof. We have neither here.” So let us see it! Put up or shut!
