You've done an incredible job with this. You did your research, and it's great to hear someone who speaks intelligently. I lived there with them for a year, before Gail got pregnant with Dweezil. I'm "Pete" on the Freakout album cover. The girl with whom he was arrested. I lived with him in Cucamonga in Studio Z. It's so interesting to see this place now....it's changed so much!

I'm surprised you don't notice the mistakes in this video. The basic house is behind a fence to the left of all this stuff and is not shown at all. Most of what is shown here was actually owned by the people next door until the Zappa's bought it and incorporated it into their house.

He may not have embraced the video culture, but he was still one of the pioneers in video. Zappa, Todd Rundgren and Mike Nesmith were the real pioneers in music video. Great vlog!!!
It's 40 years since Valley Girl came out. Moon said it was the Winchester house because her mom was always having construction going on. Frank also conducted all his music.
The instrument Frank used was called a Synclavier.
It was basically an early sampler, and Frank used it to sample EVERY note of all his instruments separately.
Once he'd done that, he essentially had access to a midi library of sounds (but with real instruments), with
which he could then compose his pieces and have them transposed straight onto digital tape.
A bit old-fashioned, perhaps. But I still prefer those sounds over the digital reproductions that most people use.

At one show I went to `us or them` tour? I managed to get to a big curtain that separated the backstage area to the audience. so between songs I went up to the curtain and pulled it back just enough to poke my head through and saw Frank huddled up with the band, laughing and joking obviously, then the light from my pulling back the curtain became apparent to them, they all looking straight at me. I was stunted for that brief moment when they all looked right at me. I quickly looked left, then right, then closed the curtain only to glance back for a quick look to see them all laughing at me, probably from my reaction of `being caught` The whole thing was hilarious to me AND them from what I gathered. Frank, and band, looked right at ME! Wow! I still get a thrill thinking about that.
As much as I try, I can never, ever imagine Zappa playing tennis.

FZ liked to play table tennis. ... but yeah.. lawn tennis is an FZ no.
Frank had no hand-eye coordination. He was incapable of doing two things at the same time. He did not sing and play the guitar, it was always one or the other. When I discussed English football with him once, he was scornful, 'Watching grown men kick a ball round a field?' There is video of him playing table-tennis, but I doubt if he ever touched that tennis court. More for the offspring if my guess.

Tried acid a couple times back in the early 70s, the first time euphoric, the second time terrifying so I gave it up, that also cured my need for pot and getting drunk. However on the first good trip my friends and I made it back to my place and as they watched the tube I laid down next to the stereo and put my Sennheisers on and started searching the FM dial for something to listen to. While spinning the knob around I tuned into Cosmic Debris for the first time! Never heard anything quite like that and Frank's menacing voice sounded like it was 30 stories tall! Months after that I tried to find it again thinking it might be in rotation but as I found out its rare that you come across one of his tunes on the radio.
Corrections needed in the first couple of sentences. Frank Zappa moved into this house on Woodrow Wilson Drive on September 6 1968. He lived in his previous house, the log cabin, on Laurel Canyon Drive for only five months, May 5th 1968 to September 5th 1968. He didn't move out because of the freaks hanging out there, but because it was made completely of wood and was a fire risk, and because Frank was threatened there by a man with a gun.
When they moved in to this house for which they paid $74,000, it had only two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room, dining room and kitchen. There was also a separate bedroom and bathroom in the grounds, and a pool house where Kansas, the house-minder slept. What you are showing here was in fact the house next door where other people lived until Frank bought it and added it to his house. The original house that Frank and Gail and several others lived in is off to the left behind the wall. The section along the side street was the neighbour's house until they bought it. The house as it is now is about six times as big as the original given the constant extensions over the years. If anyone is interested in reading about living in Frank's house 1968 to 1971, then all is revealed in 'Freak Out! My Life with Frank Zappa' by Pauline Butcher.

Yep, that looks like the Berlin Wall. The art work is by Thierry noir, one of the first people to paint the wall. I met him a couple of years ago at an exhibition he did in London. Great videos by the way ;)

I visited Beefheart's house with Gail Zappa. We took some food with us and cans of beer as they were starving. Beefheart took one of the cans, opened it, and led us into the bathroom. He climbed into the empty bath, fully clothed and conducted the conversation with us from there!

Great video! This house is very unique and I'm glad the house now is owned by another musician. However... I have to correct you about the studio. The buildings in the back that you refer to as the umrk is actually two guesthouses. The studio itself is the part of the house which faces the street, with the tennis court on the roof. The studio is directly under the tennis court. The Vault is located under the house on the west side which you can enter either via the left garagedoor on the driveway or by a stair from the garden. Zappa built the studio in the late 70's and it was in operation from 1980 on. There is many interesting things about this house. One of them is that there is no clear entrance to the house. The most widely used when you enter the iron gate on the front, take a left and climb the first couple of stairs, is a spiral staircase that leads to a suspended walkway wich leads to the kitchen. Another little detail is that each Zappa family member has its initials around the house on the Tudor style exterior.
I was there in 2008 and did not recognise it, so changed was the whole house from when I was living and working for Frank in 1968 to 1972.
@bigpink pencil I worked for Frank 1968 - 1971. I lived in his log cabin in 1968 and moved to Frank's lawyer's house along Woodrow Wilson Drive when Frank and Gail moved into this house. I visited every day. When I visited Gail in 2008 I did not recognise the house, so changed was it. The spiral staircase was not there at that time, and the front was not a jungle but a smooth lawn on which many of the Mothers photos were taken. What do you mean, make a video? @bigpink pencil What do you mean Frank moved into his lawyer's house? I moved in to Frank's lawyer's house after we all moved out of the log cabin in September 1968. The lawyer, Mutt Cohen, lived half a mile along Woodrow Wilson Drive from Frank Zappa's house there.

Interesting, I like to know what the pattern is behind certain diseases and there are common metaphysical causes behind certain diseases, and for prostate cancer it is this:
Prostate - Refusal to accept responsibility for the negativity in one’s life (blame, victim).
Also sitting down too much (Zappa's composing workaholism) puts pressure on the prostate as, the cyclist Armstrong also got prostate cancer.
Nice one Jordan, that was a great little piece on the Zappa house, and your Knowledge of Frank off the cuff, was excellent. I went to a Mothers Concert here in Auckland when I was about 11yrs Old, and was a proud owner of OverNite Sensation at age 7, I'm 50 now and am still discovering so much new material he produced, I still get taken on a journey listening to his Guitar Genius, as well as the array of absolute top end Muso's that were able to keep up and in so doing produced so much original Music Brilliance!. Awesome clip Jordan keep up the good work.

They have been working on a truce between Ahmet and Dweezil for some time.
I once worked next door to Frank at Julius Shulmans house. I had heard of Frank before but never bought an album. Soon after this I bought my first cd. Some mothers bootleg. I later found out who Julius Shulman was and equally fell in love with the both of them. I sure do miss them. Love you Frank love you Julius love you Gaga !

Sally Latham yeah, not exactly who frank would have wanted living there, by his interviews, but since he didn't care about a grave stone or how he'd be remembered, I guess he'd probably not care who lived in his house as well..

@@DazewithJordantheLion I think, actually, that Frank would have admired Lady Gaga because he knew how difficult it is to survive in the music industry and she had found a way, just as he had done. He had admiration for quite a few survivors in the music business, he just didn't want to be friends or hang out with any of them.

I was lucky enough to see Frank Zappa's concert in 1984 in Iowa, and in Sept. 2015 I saw Zappa Plays Zappa, that is Dweezil's band play one week before Gail Zappa died. Dweezil is not allowed to use Frank Zappa's name for his music. He can no longer use the band name Zappa Plays Zappa thanks to Ahmet not letting him. At the time I didn't know I was witnessing his last tour under Frank's name. Dweezil's band is awesome. Cool video on Frank you did Jordan.

You might be interested in reading what Frank was like at home behind closed doors. I document it in Freak Out! My Life with Frank Zappa'. It's the only book that shows Frank in his early days of fame, un-tethered as it were.

There's an interview with Moon Zappa where she says how near the end of Gail's life, she was taking her to hospital for a check up and out of the blue Gail says that she hopes Moon can forgive her. At the time she just thought it was because her mind was going and perhaps she felt like she was a burden on her.
In hindsight, and when you read the whole thing, it sounds like Ahmet was taking advantage of Gail's failing mental health to get majority control of the estate.
It's worth nothing that Diva also has a 30% share in the ZFT. Go check out any of her social media accounts and see if you can find when she last did anything that promoted or was in any way connected with the Zappa brand. All Diva cares about is knitting, yoga and art exhibitions that her friends put on.
Ahmet's pretty much the same. He has control, but does nothing to promote the Zappa brand for future generations. Just before Gail died the ZFT announced that there would be no more Frank Zappa albums.
All that work in the archives is going to sit there and nobody is going to ever hear it, the exact opposite of Frank's philosophy that dots on a page aren't music, in the same way that a recipe isn't food. You can't eat a recipe, and you can't hear a printed score.

I hope you realise by now that most of this is incorrect. Ahmet is putting out albums. I think Gail thought that Moon and Dweezil had careers of their own and that Ahmet and Diva would work on ZFT so in that respect earned a greater share. I think it's wrong to paint Gail badly without proper knowledge.
Also, to add to my previous comment, Gail would have realised that Diva has less accomplishments outside of her knitting to make a living and needed more financial help than the others. That's my reading of it, at any rate.
@@paulinebutcherbird Hi Pauline, three years on and yes Ahmet is now putting out albums (including some fantastic sets like the Hot Rats sessions, no doubt with some input from Joe), and organised the Hologram tour. This is great, but there should never have been a time period where his interest in the Zappa product was ever in doubt.
Diva still does very, very little to promote any of her father's work. If you believe that Gail gave her a greater percentage to make up for her lifestyle and career being less fruitful than the others, then it's a bit disrespectful to her mother that she hasn't embraced this.
If you see my other posts across various social media, you'll see that I've always defended Gail, as after the Zapanale (of which I think she made a bad decision), it was as if someone had declared open season on her and she was unfairly demonised for every comment she made.
@@surfdigby Then we share a view of defending Gail in some respects but in my case, not all. I hope the picture will be made clearer when Moon Zappa's memoir comes out.

When he bought the house it was a very modest two bedroom, two bathroom house with a basement where Frank worked and the living room and kitchen and dining room were above. There was another bedroom and bathroom in the grounds. What is shown in this video was in fact the house next door which Frank and Gail bought later. The original house as it was and still is, is behind the wall to the left where Jordan didn't even go.

The instrument is the Synclavier. It was basically a sample player/sequencer by today's understanding.
The Yellow Shark was the name of a concert where an orchestra (The Ensemble Moderne) played a number of his compositions, and it was played through a hexaphonic sound system.
It was named after a gift Frank received from a fan that was a broken surfboard, re-cut into the shape of a shark.
I adore Frank so thanx for the house tour. U can as I did look for the history of Laurel Canyon and Frank's house comes on via an estate agent so that's worth a look, only lasts about 4 mins anyway again great video and thanx

So was this the house the Alice Cooper band rolled up to early one morning, set up their instruments in the living room and started jamming as an audition for a sleeping FZ because they misinterpreted AM instead of PM?
Actually I don't think so. That audition was done when Zappa lived in the log cabin once owned by Tom Mix. He later moved to this home.
No. It was at the log cabin on Laurel Canyon Drive and he set up his instruments in the car court. He had misunderstood Frank's instructions of 7 o'clock to mean in the morning, when Frank had meant 7pm. Christine Frka, Moon Zappa's nanny, came and woke me to see if I would go and wake Frank up. I told her they were crazy because he'd not long gone to bed. When Frank got up at 2pm he agreed to Alice doing his audition. Frank was unimpressed but because he was so fond of Christine, and she was Alice's girlfriend at the time, Frank offered them a contract to record.
Great stuff now I need to know more...
The best place to learn more is to read 'Freak Out! My Life with Frank Zappa' which covers his life at the house until 1971. He moved there in September 1968 after 4 months at the log cabin in Laurel Canyon which I also document after living with the Zappa;s and working for Frank.

keeelane Frank had small scale Synclaviers on his last 2 tours and the biggest Version available in his home studio Utility Muffin Research Kitchen but he did not create the Synclavier, the instrument/software was created as a joint effort by Dartmouth college amd several computer geeks ,Zappa composing and playing his entire album " Jazz from Hell " won a Grammy and brought the instrument into the main stream ,Zappa composed his final triple album of modern classical /orchestral called " Civilization Phase 3 " using the Synclavier right up to his passing away .

Great vlog. Was sort of disappointed it wasn’t the infamous Tom Mix, Oracle house.
I'm a big Zappa fan from Lima Perú and I think this video is a nice way to see the surroundings where he lived and how a tiny house it was transformed in the mytical UMRK. It's sad that Lady Gaga bought it and all reduces as always do to money amounts and business. This place should be a museum for the Zappa fans all over the world and not a simple studio who can be used for any famous popstar without real chops and artistic sense but Well... It is what it is right?

Synapsenkitzler I too love Night School but my favorite Synclavker piece from the Jazz from Hell album is the G Spot Tornado Frank won a Grammy for as best new jazz album ,especially since it's modern classical and has nothing to do with jazz lol ,anyhow I was in the audience and had the honor of all honors to see/hear Frank conducting that piece of music ,I met frank and he had this aura about him where you knkw your in the company of true genius ,I'm have other zappa stories from my brief personal interactions ,telephone interactions and mail interactions I had with Frank that I'll post in the main thread for all to read but if your a musician you may be interested in this ,if you play Frank's G-Spot Tornado in a properly acoustically treated room ,capable full range monitors and a miced spectrum analyzer that piece of music was recorded to go down to 8hz with all tone or eq set to detent neutral ,which is a great strength of composition to accomplish without ending up with the bloated and fatiguing bass response of some rap music .
I'd want to say that Berlin wall piece very likely has some relation to FZ. Look up his Govt involvement as the Czech Ambassador. And there's interviews of Frank talking about the wall. it's interesting it's so close. How close was it exactly to his house? I'll put a link to Frank talking about the wall. there's a few as well as a final concert he did where he tells the audience what he hopes for their newfound freedom. OK, at 3:30 to 6:40 he talks specifically about breaking pieces of the wall up and giving it to local and international artists. What you wanna bet the artist got that piece either from or thru Frank?

I don't think it was either/or - meaning, that I think Zappa viewed himself as both a rock star AND a serious composer. Yes, Zappa said a lot disparaging things about the rock 'n roll world. He also said many disparaging things about the classical music world too. More to the point, Zappa constantly returned to touring with his bands. Even if he didn't take drugs, he loved the rocker life style. Let's face it, he didn't do drugs because his outlet and his own form of addiction was anonymous sex on the road. He was a conflicted and complicated person. He created his own studio because his contract with Warners was all tied up in litigation and Warner wouldn't pay for further studio time. They also wouldn't release his tapes that they had in their possession, back to him. Anyway, it reached a point where it was just as cheap for Zappa to build his own studio, as it was to pay for all that studio time out of his pocket. There's no way MTV would have shown the type of videos that Frank Zappa would have wanted to make. It would have been like dealing with Warners all over again. Yes, he was brilliant and, yes, he always 'did it his way'. But he also wasn't always fair with those who worked for him as well. He was a tough and - at times - cut throat business person. That was yet another contradiction, when you consider his diatribes against the evils of capitalism early on in his career. Ultimately, it's his music that will survive and be remembered most. . . . and we'll all get a chuckle from his irreverence from time to time as well.

I live about 30 minutes from the house. I've driven by it many times taking short cuts "over the hill," and I have even been inside. I can't tell you why I was able to get inside, for I may have to kill you. But the place is huge and full of little nooks and crannies. Nothing about it is typical, but it's all very cool.
