What mechanical keyboard are you building? Do you prefer soldering or do you like hot swap? I love soldering!
Edit - I uploaded this segment separately to make it easier to find for people who just need to learn how to solder to make their keebs :)
I prefer solder, I never built keyboard but soldering seems more fun
Edit: Spelling
I prefer solder but it's also like to have one or two hot swap keyboards to test/try different switches with.
@@DonnyDonnMendoza I agree :)
Prefer hotswap. Solder is great too just need the tools. Awesome video JuJu.
@@YayaTia_II Thanks yaya :D
A heads up for soldering through hole, The best technique I've used/Found was to:
Place iron tip on the components, Then run your solder wire from the tip of the iron onto the components, then pull the solder away then the iron.
The process takes less than two seconds, keeps beginners from overheating parts, and also provides an extremely clean joint.
the same thing i did for some reason lol, yet somehow i still messed up and burn the tip of mah finger a bit, guess im nub :/
Short and simple tutorial. Love u man
You Sir are one of the best DIY keyboard resources on the internet!
(and now I finally have a link to an awesome quick tutorial on how to solder/desolder switches to give people when they ask how to solder keyboards ☝😆)
Haha thanks so much :)
this is like the only solder video I've watched so far where someone actually wears protective gear. I'm glad you're being safe, I wish everyone else would too lol
nice tutorial man! it's amazing
Very well executed video with great camera shots and detail will be very helpful.
just an amazing tutorial, thx!
I was in hope of fixing the solder joint of my modded Armaggeddon MKA-3C Psychfalcon 2017 keeb that I swapped out with Box Browns a year ago and one of your tutorials made me realized that I made a big mistake when it comes to soldering equipment. I bought unleaded solder for this job and it turned out to be a horrid joint. In the future, I will mod another OEM boards or build my own keeb with this video! Great tutorial! 👍
Haha I warned you! :D You can use unleaded it's no problem but it's MUCH harder to use with normal household soldering tools.
It was my pleasure to help out! :)
thank juju ur soldering vids have helped me soo much ty bro
Glad I could help!
Thanks for the guide, just built my own keyboard and it feels amazing man. :)
Great to hear!
excellent video. you're great at explaining stuff!
I appreciate that! Enjoy!
Thanks for this - going to use an old mechanical keyboard ciruit board to make a foot pedal controller.
thank you!
You didn't talk about how that was an incomplete suction of solder and the frustration of trying to get everything off. Something you have to learn the hard way is that these types of videos make it look easy af
Very true and good point Adam!
Done two builds previously but both are hot swap, might try learning soldering and do some ortho 45% build :)
omg you just saved ne love you im so happy i found you thx
Thanks for helping! I’m turning 12 in about a week and I am looking into building a mechanical keyboard. Might build a hot swappable as my first one though. Lol
12 years old wow! Nice job, can't wait to see it!
JUJU I bought the parts. I’m so excited! 😃
how did it go
@@nick9115 it turned out really well!
@@benthebean2120 can u make a vid on ur channel of it
Thanks for the tips .I'm trying to desolder my k70 rapidfire switches and replace them with gateron yellows . I like the silver speed switches but the actuation is too sensitive for my liking . With me luck !
Nice video!
Thanks!
cool video
Need to replace some led on the old Ducky, this video come in handy, thanks!
Pleasure! :)
sir please make tutorial how to desolder switches that have led in it like steelseries apex m750
good tutorial
Thanks!
can you use a wet sponge to clean the tip
YESSSSS
good for u
Can you help me, when im desoldering my pad got broken, what should I do
النهارده هجمع اول كيبورد فيديو مفيد جدا استمر 😊
شكرا كتير! :)
Iv been soldering things for years and in confined spaces I.E in cars wireing looms no health issues to report never done a keyboard but for newbies soldering listen to this guy very well instructed
Thank you my friend!
After de soldering all switches, should i put every single switches in the same order as it was? Or can I put it in any order?
Nice video :) Unrelated question, but is that the raw audio of the Rode Wireless Go?
At the start it's a bit far away from my mouth and I am in a room without good sound absorption so it suffers there if it is not close to your mouth. As you can see at the end its much better close to my mouth :) It's a perfect mic though!
I was cleaning my keyboard and somehow broke 10% of the keys.
Idk what happened, I'm checking the solders and they all seem fine... Could it be the blue switches that broke?
Dumb question but how do you solder it after you are done desoldering it. My keyboard is already fully built but I wanna replace a switch. How do you solder it again after if there is no more pin? Pls reply
i desoldered/soldered new switches into my one 2 mini for the first time and it didnt go exactly as planned. when i was desoldering, for a few switches they would get stuck and wouldnt come out and i had to use pliers to get the switches out (mx browns lmao i threw them away anyways) and there was this like copper ring around the pin of the switch. when i soldered it back together i only had 4 keys that didnt work and one was the pin with the copper ring around the pni... im guessing it was the contact point which actuates the switch :( is there any way to fix this? i recovered the rings that got pulled out from the switches
also great vid and thanks for the help!
Find the trace where you tore off the contact pad and scrape it to reveal the metal , you can solder a thin piece of wire to the exposed trace and the other end of the wire to the pin in the switch
Im gonna use this in my rk61
Same, i wanna put c3 kiwis in mine
Is the rk61 not hotswappable?
@@matthewparrilla4503 I have one that is
@@rajefrog4777 oh okay, just a bit curious lol.. Thanks for responding
@@thedoublearon7192 ima put dragon fruit
hello hehe, could someone help me please. some of my pads became deformed after of soldering, is it because my temp is too hot or im touching the pad too long im touching the pad only 5s, i set my iron to 350c and it is 60w
So your "tip" is nice and shiny huh? That's great ;)
no.
Do you have another link for the solder since you closed your site??
thanks for this tutorial, question : the iron touches the pad and pin at the same, but how about the solder wire itself? I can't really tell as its zoomed in, are you touching the solder to the pad and pin too or the solder to the iron?(3:09)
A bit of both. You want the solder to go on the pin and pad when it is heated enough to melt the solder you see (and the flux). But if it doesn't (yet due to heating the parts) you can just put it on the soldering iron and it will naturally flow into the pad/pin. A little of both helps.
@@JoeGaz thanks for clarifying that , will give it a shot!
JUJU! I found a Fume extractor for $35 USD on amazon called a KOTTO that I would highly recommend so you dont have to solder outside :) It comes with a spare carbon filter aswell!
Hey Forbies! Wow this one? www.amazon.com.au/KOTTO-Soldering-Absorber-Electric-Extractor/dp/B07ZHH5H7N/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=kotto&qid=1598874059&sr=8-2
Looks nice! Thanks so much for considering me! I do have one but it's not as fancy :D
@@JoeGaz This is actually the one www.amazon.com/Absorber-Remover-Extractor-Prevention-Soldering/dp/B07VWDN29F/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=3F467GN9ZQK8M&dchild=1 Maybe it's only currently available in USA, not sure if there is any AU proxies. Hopefully so! It's super convenient for indoor soldering use, it sucks up the fumes right away! Thanks for all these tutorials. Built a Tofu65 with your advice and it's been beautiful! Loving these Paco franken-switches with SA Bliss on top!
I over solder my keyboard which look like a little ball but it works really fine just like a normal keyboard but does it affect performance or anything like I’m worried that my keyboard was not 100% on its performance
It should be fine. If it works good on you! It just means it did not flow properly. Do not play with it much you could make it worse. You can solve it with some flux and a soldering iron.
Great tutorial for someone who hasn’t soldered much, I’m not even working on a keyboard I’m repairing a car part
Glad it helped!
Is it okay to just use a wet sponge instead of a brass ball to clean the tip?
Yes! :) I find brass is better though.
I keep hitting my pinky and the solder sucker doesn’t suck all the solder :/
I would really like to solder outside :/ to utilize that useless solder bits faster. Also yeah you actually need glasses for soldering because yellow rings will appear outside your eyes XD maybe some people are "less alergic" to it, but for me it is annyoing and I confirm this guy head wear gear for soldering :D
super nooby question, but i've just gotten into mechanical keyboards and i'm curious! can you desolder a keyboard and leave it unsoldered, to like... make your own hot swappable keyboard? or do you HAVE to resolder switches that were initially soldered in?
You can and it's called hot swap holtites. It's difficult to install but worth it. However it's usually better to just buy a hotswap keyboard/pcb
@@JoeGaz thank you so much, that’s great to know! i had my heart set on a non-swappable keyboard and bought it in the end, and i do like the switches, but it’s nice to know there’s a method for hot swapping down the line if i want to :)
You can check out Mill-Max sockets as well. They can be soldered onto a keyboard to convert it into a hotswap board.
But my tip is sharp it’s that ok?
I pulled out one of those bronze looking circles, does that mean thay my whole keyb is rip?
Not at all. Very repairable.
@@JoeGaz oh wow, i was close to throwing it in trash, could you tell me how to fix it, do i have to pay someone who knows what they are doing or can i try and fiddle with it? Also do you have any links of the repair process i would really appreciate it!
How does you solder liquify so quickly when desolder? Mine takes a good 4 seconds or so even on a higher heat.
Your solder might not be that good quality or might be lead free
immersednoob i have kester solder 60 40
Either your soldering temp is a bit low or the soldering tip on yours might be dull. It might need a good clean. Come join my discord so I can help :)
Try running your solder from the tip of your iron onto the components, Kinda like a welding bead while the iron is contacting the components.
Can i use cheap soldering iron like 3$ soldering iron?
Yep
Just a question. If you don’t want to get glasses, will swimming goggles work
Also after desoldering, where do you put the solder you sucked up
Do you have to re solder after you change the switch?
Yes otherwise it won't work.
Thx
Is it safe to solder and desolder the pcb?
Of course but not too much
That desoldering iron like they made it only to work on keyboards because all the videos I've seen are working on pc keyboards
can we reuse a desoldered switch
Yes

@@elusha3926 hahah I can't tell ir you are joking, just research stuff on google
@@emilsdaksa2712 I’m not being sarcastic, for real tho, i thought u can not use a reuse a desoldered switch
@@elusha3926 xD okey
I have an idea for videos. Teach us how to fix broken keyboards. lols.
Done and done ;)
What do you mean by the pad? What is the pad? I don’t see any pad
The circle gold part is called a pad.
if you wanna practice
use a old office mouse
Man, my pads on the Nemui65 fuckin suck. They're so small. I was afraid I was going to burn whatever the surrounding material is around the pad. Those are some fat pads on there in comparison.
If you have a thinner soldering iron tip try that! You can also try and get a blob of solder onto the tip first and then try lift the soldering iron up so the thinner bit is pressing against the pad.
@@JoeGaz Ohhh I see what you're saying. I may try that then. A thinner tip would be nice too. I'm using the little chisel tip that came with the Hakko FX-888D and I had to put a blob of solder on there almost every single time. Each joint took 2 or 3 tries, because it didn't seem like there was enough heat getting to it. I could try holding it more straight up and down though yea, you're right. I was sort of coming at it from the side.
You remind me of hungrybox
haha who is that? :D
