Another Sri Lanka In The Making? Pakistan On Brink Of Economic Ruin | Insight | Full Episode

  • A growing debt crisis, dwindling forex reserves and soaring inflation have pushed Pakistan to the brink of an economic disaster. These were some of the factors which contributed to the ouster of former Prime Minister Imran Khan in April this year through a vote of no confidence. His removal has created a turbulent period of political instability and uncertainty in the country.
Today, the Pakistani rupee has been in free fall. It plummeted to an all-time low of 211 against the US dollar only in June this year, adding further pressure to the Pakistani economy. It now relies on financial aid from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to help stave off an unimaginable economic crisis.
With the economic crisis deepening, all eyes are on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to ease sufferings of his people. Can he get the country of the woods? Or is Pakistan another Sri Lanka in the making?

News is mostly about infra push, railway upgrades, record road building, different government programs, hosting g20, etc. PM Modi himself said in an interview 2 days ago when asked, "I hope they get two meals a day, we've moved too far ahead of them. We're concerned with our development, we don't think about it in terms of Pakistan" India is becoming 3rd largest economy in the world in 2 years, fastest growing, and has set 2047 goal to be developed. a $4 trillion economy that has countless ongoing projects in all areas, a far cry from Pakistan bailout-driven, debt-riddled failing economy.

Reasons for Pakistani current economic crisis:
    1. Corruption in Government, at all levels. Inefficient economy. Corruption in all wings- police, bureaucracy, judiciary -means absence of checks and balances in society.
    2. Lack of foreign investments (due to law & order issues, terror environment), lack of exports, FATF listing, etc all lead to deficiency of dollars.
    3. Competition with India, mad zeal for Kashmir, historical military legacy means enormous amount of budget goes to military - wrecking the economy (same as USSR ruined itself during cold war)
    4. Religious fundamentalism gripping society - where conversion of young non-Muslim girls, blasphemy laws, etc are more important for the public than seeking accountability, development, prosperity from the Govt
    5. China & their predatory economic loans to Pakistan (again this is result of Pakistani animosity to India that they have no other choice than stay in Chinese camp)
PS- Pakistan has always been a failing state. Dozens of IMF programmes over decades are a proof of it. It was propped by USA (and some rich Gulf nations in name of religion) all along due to Geo-politcal consideration (Afghanistan war 2002-2020, Soviet Afghan war (1980s) , before that CENTO (1950-1960s) membership, etc) through their annual Billion dollars aids.
That prop has gone away now after US withdrawal from Afghanistan. And Pakistan's frailty has now just come to surface nakedly.

An example of export driven economy is South Korea where export to GDP ratio is 79%. In contrast, both India and Pakistan are consumption driven economy. India grow faster due its stability and openness to foreign direct investment. I believe if Pakistan improves it security, stabilize the country and more openness to foreign direct investment, its economy will improve. A stable and prosperous Pakistan will not only make the people happier but also reduce its hostility towards India. So it is in India's interest to keep Pakistan stable. Total collapse of Pakistan will only bring catastrophy to the whole region.

When you buy infrastructure projects from China, without local job creation, at exhorbitant prices, using loan again taken from China, then what else will happen. In a normal country, citizens pool their money and labour, to build infrastructure for themselves. Pakistan allowed China to build China-benefiting projects, on Pakistani land. And totally neglected their own needs.

You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Pakistan doesn't actually follow Islamic law. Pakistan only followed Sharia during the 80s Zia Ul Haq regime. Today, there is still a Sharia court, but it is separate from the civil court. Most laws in Pakistan remain man-made.
