Teaching My Macaw to Say Lots of Words!! (HIS VOICE THOUGH!)

- In order to get Jinx to start saying OK I used a training technique called capturing. Once I was able to capture it enough for him to offer it more so, it was time to give it a cue! One of you suggested the OK symbol with my hand and I loved that. So that's the cue! This video demos how to implement a cue. The hand position for wave an OK are pretty similar, except for the fingers moving, so I can kinda see why he pairing them, but he was clearly starting to discern the difference.

I saw the same thing.
It almost looks like he's trying to give his version of the ok sign. That might be why he's raising his foot.
I think my wave cue and this cue are similar enough that he is thinking I mean for him to wave. The wave cue just has added motion to it.

I miss my birds so much. Ex kept them after divorce. She hatched the Scarlett so she obviously was keeping her and we didnt want to separate them so she kept the Buffins also. Ive watched a lot of your vids and see a lot of mistakes I had made. Maybe soon I will start looking into a rescue bird.

I think bubba is lifting his foot because he’s literally giving you the A -Ok sign back he’s actually doing sign language back. Bubba is my favorite parrot I have ever seen. He’s so cute, his personality is darling. I think he’s adorable! I’m in love with him. I binge watch his videos. He’s so cute. I also love your family. You guys are so awesome.

I think he was mimicking you with his foot. You would raise your hand with the ok sign, and he would raise his with the word. He was copying you. So intelligent!!
Sometimes I think your praise means more than the treat. Every time you praise him he gets even more excited. lol

Jamieleigh, I've been following your channel for a while now. I don't have birds, have never had birds and know that a bird isn't right for me. But I get so much enjoyment out of watching you and Dave train your flock! You both are so knowledgeable and it is a real treat to see you work with them!

They also the click can be used for training dogs as well. This really neat.
I'm going to buy one of their clickers for my doggos training. The cheap ones I have don't always click reliably and that's so frustrating!

I noticed that too. That happened really often but not always.
My parrot nods his head every time before he says “come on”, no idea why lol
Yeah I counted 9/14 good OKs that had a head shake beforehand... I know he's rather twitchy but it seemed intentional towards the end...
Sandra P Yeah I saw that too, it looks like a head shake got in there and he thinks that’s part of the trick, especially since head shake is in his repertoire already.
Laura G Yeah, that‘s why I mentioned it. To me, it also looks like he thinks the trick is „head shaking +‘ok‘“.
My cockatiel is an epic talker. He says hello followed by people's names, when they come in the room. He says good morning. Whatcha doing? Pretty birdy. Baby bird do do do do do do, and lots more. He also mimics household noises and the wild birds outside.
Awww, my cockatiel too! He says watcha doing, whatcha doin buddy, pretty bird, Im a pretty good bird/buddy. He also knows several songs and does sound effects. He cracks me up.

I don't know if you noticed, but I think he is pairing the "okay" with a headshake now. Maybe I'm wrong but I think he did a headshake ins almost all of the "okay" after he stopped pairing it with lifting his foot
I rewatched it and I think you're right. He's definitely doing the headshake quite a bit.
Birds can head shake when they're thinking really hard, like a human shakes their head going, "No not that!" Jinx may be realizing that raising his foot with "OK" doesn't get him the treat, so he's "shaking" himself out of that behavior.
Now he's over that but he gets suuuuuuper twitchy before doing it... I swear he just wants to pair it with ANYTHING! 😄

I get my new Macaw soon! I can't wait!!!!!!!!! I have had one 30 year old rescue Macaw but he had to go live in a bird hospital due to the abuse and neglect from his old home and the resulting injuries. Poor baby. I miss him massively but I'm so glad hes in the best place he can be now. I love this clicker training! I can't wait to spend my time with my new Macaw again and start training and happiness!

I love seeing how good you are at getting messages across to your birds. Over time I've gotten better at that with my cockatiel too. It's so exciting that I can tell her "c'mere" and she flies over to me immediately. It honestly feels amazing to always be on the same page with a pet

I had the experience of falling over in front of a parrot in a pet shop when I was very small, and I can still remember it copying me crying and then throwing its head back dramatically and doing this deep demon like laugh 😂
Must of been hilarious to anyone watching, but I'll be honest, gave me nightmares for years!
It was just so unexpected and human. Now though, I wonder who taught it that laugh... or whether like me crying, it just copied someone it found amusing?
