  • In this video, I explain how important it is to watch and hear yourself play. Adding a day of recording yourself or taking video of yourself playing at least once a month will really make you play in a more uncomfortable state which will really help your playing. It also makes it very easy to spot areas that you can improve on! Do you ever record yourself? It's funny how the minute you hit record you start feeling a new layer of pressure. I hope this lesson makes you want to record yourself if you don't do it already.

One other advantage of recording for students - when you do actually get a song down pretty well it’s a big confidence boost to listen afterwards. Recently I used my loop pedal to jam over rhythm changes at a fairly high tempo, and while playing I felt frustrated and discouraged at how boring and badly played my improv seemed. Yet the recording is
very fun to listen to! I only made a few mistakes and I had a few nice melodic ideas between the cliches. But if I hadn’t done the recording I would have only remembered the mistakes and frustration.

I loved that last piece of instruction about you not including your face in the video when you record. I guffawed at that one! Thanks again, Rich!

There is one other thing. There have some times when our group is just cooking. And at the end I could just kick myself for not having it to listen to again. Sometimes I think I have played poorly and it sounds ok. And the reverse is also true. You can’t always judge your tone as it sounds across the room. And how you sit in the mix. Am I too loud? Or is that damn keyboard player sucking all the oxygen out of the room. Tell you what, tape don’t lie and it can be humbling. Thanks. Shally

It depends on what it is! Does it play good? As long as you are not expecting to resell it for a higher price or even lose money on it if you decide to sell. But if you like the way it feels when you play it, that is hard to deny no matter what finish is on it,.
