  • Artists depict a divided nation, crumbling world order, and the threat of war. Is it the early 1900s, or now? Peter Winant takes us through "The Anxious Eye: German Expressionism and Its Legacy" at the National Gallery of Art.
The exhibit features more than 100 prints, drawings, books, and sculptures by German artists from the 20th century. 120 years ago, Germany's population had largely moved from farmland to city, driven by industrialization. Much had been gained, but artists felt uncertain. A loss of cultural soul. The Expressionists found a deep connection to the existential human core in African and Pacific sculpture.
