    This show is considered as one of the great sitcoms of English comedy, in more recent years its had a bit of a reboot as Still Open All Hours, with Granville now owning the shop.
    This show and Porridge are Ronnie's finest sitcoms.

      I was hoping someone had explained that for our man! Thanks for that. Again, very much an item of the period, in terms of it appearing in a TV show. The 1970s and 80s were the last time you saw comedy like this - gentle, domestic and heartwarming with genuine characters and enough chuckles and cultural references to keep it entertaining.

  • @yzolakitchi
    @yzolakitchi Před 12 dny +7

    It's hard to explain exactly how big of a comfort hug this series remains. As a 49 yr old Northerner who sadly moved down south age 5, we had numerous visits to relatives still up north. The milk float delivered to my gran's at 6am and we would get woken up to say hello to the milk lady Annie who would tell us how big we'd grown since our last visit. The local grocery store was referred to as 'Auntie Jean's' by my gran, though she was unrelated to us! Pretty much all the items in Arkwright's store were available, except we got a whopping 10p upon return of our glass dandelion and burdock or cream soda bottles! As for the insistent flirting between Albert and Nurse Gladys, even watching now, it very much still feels that Gladys has full control of the situation - in part, perhaps because of her role as a nurse, and the inherent respect that goes along with it. I suspect audiences today might find it questionable, but she is never distressed by it - just world weary and bemused - as a woman, I can relate! 🙂 And it's a comedy of its time with the usual gender stereotypes. Hope you'll stick with it, but if you fancy trying a few other first episodes of some classic sitcoms, here are just a few for your consideration! 1. The Good Life (1975-1978) 2. Keeping Up Appearances (1990-1995) 3. Ever Decreasing Circles (1984-1989) 4. One Foot in The Grave (1990 -2000) 5. Waiting For God (1990-1994)

      Every one a gem! & as a 74 year old who has been dealing with inappropriate advances from both men & women since my pre teens to my late sixties I too respond with 'world weary & bemused' tolerant evasion. Chin up but never let your guard down - opportunists are everywhere. Cheers.

    • @yzolakitchi
      @yzolakitchi Před 10 dny +2

      @@MazzaEliLi7406 lol. Yes, I wish I'd had the resolve of Gladys whilst working with numerous 'opportunists' in the earlier stages of my working life! I remember one job interview I had for a restaurant. I sat with the manager when an electrician who was working on some lights, climbed down his ladder and walked past. Turned to the manager and said, "You should hire her, she's got great legs!" 30 years ago and I still remember the cringey feeling of, "So we really are all just lumps of meat then!" I think it's so interesting re-watching classic sitcoms with modern sensibilities, but I do understand how newcomers must recoil at some of the 'accepted' sexism and misogyny! 🙂

    They called him The Guv'nor. He was highly respected because he was so good. You've met the three main characters, they are supplemented by various customers, some regular others one offs. Then there is the milk delivery lady who Granville develops a thing for.
    In complete contrast, in Porridge, Ronnie plays a wily old con in prison, that series is excellent too.
    Granville ( David Jason) achieved huge success following this a shady street trader in Only Fools and Horses. , That's very funny too. He's been knighted since then.
    Give yourself a treat S, and do some more.

    There were about 30 episodes of OAH in the 1970s/80s, and then it was revived in the 2010s as “Still Open All Hours” in which an older Granville was essentially a continuing version of the Arkwright character.

    Although it had to be fitted in around the various commitments of Barker and Jason, 'Open All Hours' was a big hit show. Particularly during its longer run in the 1980s. I don't know how many people objected to the fact that the regular cast were not, in point of fact, northern. The writing, on the other half, definitely is!

    This ran for around Ten Years first time around, I think it started around 1975-ish so running alongside The Two Ronnies, Sir David Jason bought it back about six or so years ago, as they'd asked before about whatever happened to Granville, they kept a picture of Ronnie B by the old till. The original series pulled in millions and the person who played Nurse Gladys worked with Dan in the nightclubs, so knew Ronnie C more so than Ronnie B at the time in the 60's. The shop they use is actually the local hairdressers, which they refurbished each series, so it's a real Street in the North and exteriors are all the shop, I think they filmed up north as well, but might have been BBC in London, it's a long time ago

    The First of any series is never quite representative of the series as a whole. I think Open All Hours (like Porridge) has "pilot" episode" in the form of Comedy Playhouse (for Porridge) and Six of Barker - for OAH. , the six also produced the series "Clarence" (a mr magoo type short sighted character). We had on Saturday a special 60years of BBC2 program scheduled, which included Ep1 of Carla Lane's "Butterflies" , and the first episode of "The Likely Lads"

    Hey Squirrel. This was a great programme and was a pure record of the time. Arkwright’s “belle” Midwife Gladys Emmanuel was the typical midwife. They were employed by the local GP (Family Doctor) to aid women through their pregnancy. At one time they rode around on bicycles but later all seemed to have Moris Minor cars, usually white! Usually they were portly women and the best known women locally as you can imagine. They knew the intimate details of the mothers in the area, and the dad’s!
    The shop was typical of Mum & Pop shops before the time of supermarkets and large grocery stores.
    The ability of Ronnie Barker to keep up such a speech impediment was very skilful and didn’t seem to offend the general public. The follow up show “Still open all hours” wit David Jason taking over the main role is a great show with some of the old characters and a few new.

    Although it became an intrinsic part of the series, Arkwright's internal monologue was the one part Ronnie Barker didn't really care for. I think it was because it might have cast the character in a more philosophical light, at odds with his apparent devotion to small shiny tokens of exchange. All of which he preferred to keep in the till - with it's cash drawer operated by a production hand with a rope just off-set.

    "Open All Hours" doesn't refer to literal 24 hours, it's just a Brit saying. More a mindset like the Beatles 8 days a week. It just means that if you need a tin of beans or a loaf of bread etc the chances are that the shop will be open. Maybe 6:30 AM to 9:00 PM which may as well be all day.

    One of the better sitcoms. There was a couple of comments that would be considered too racist to air today. When Granville said things were so hard in his day that people from Bradford went looking for work in Pakistan, it was a reference to the high number of Pakistanis that emigrated to Bradford from the 1950s onwards.

      thats not really racist, it is factual ! it was more Post WW2 a lot from Bradford etc became ten pound poms and went to New Zealand/ Australia etc leaving somewhat of a labour shortage for the remaining mills etc. The enterprising migrants in ended up running some of the textile businesses (and just about every minicab and all speaking with a broad yorkshire accent ! ( see AdventureMe vids though for how local and national govt took the historic heart out of much of Bradford with the destruction of rail stations and the blasting through of ring roads and motorways.
