The Tesla motors are great. We are on a road trip right now in our Model 3. We just went across the entire width of Nevada today at 88 mph. The car and motor behaved beautifully.

In the '60s we built those 1/24th scale slot cars. Taking the motors apart, we swapped the brass bushings for ball bearings, balanced and re-surfaced the armature allowing us to shim the case magnets in closer, took a few dozen windings off, and eventually added a 9 volt circuit backwards, for brakes. Silver brushes increased current flow, but now the motor's are "brushless". A dedicated car battery provided power for each lane. Sometimes we had to dig a car out of the wall they were so fast. Best to race with a helmet on.
Thanks to Tesla, that business is under review recently and now we have a new generation of electric motors that make all the others obsolete.

And Slot-cars...for me is was about 1958-9...not a lot of up-grades then, maybe high-schoolers with a little more $$, but yeah, sweet memories!
After high school, I worked in a Motor Repair shop, and it does appear these stators are 6 pole 3 phase, and with the amount of wires in the 3 leads, look to be high current. At 60 hz, that's 1200 RPM....but with variable frequency...it would vary, still have some heating issues at low RPM, but I think the Teslas are liquid cooled?

To Michael Sherwin - I worked in the electric motor repair industry and it is actually easy. Get a pneumatic operated chisel with a V shape and cut off one end of the winding flush with the laminations, then heat the stator up by some means, an oven, a kerosene or propane portable forced air heater, a rosebud torch. The laminations should get hot, at least 300 degrees F. Then using big pry bars on the uncut end, pull the coils out one at a time. Depending on the slot fill, they might come out cold.

I have had no end of problems with Chinese electric motors burning out on my Electric bench saws and Vacuum cleaner and other failures regarding made in China , I avoid them as much as possible particularly clothes .
To Bruce Burns - Tools are either commercial grade or hobby grade. If the price seems to good to be true, it IS too good to be true. The tool quality was chosen by the U.S. importer and China will make it as cheap or high quality as you order. Also you can destroyed any table saw by feeding the material too fast and overloading the motor.

Quality is directly proportional to the cost as far as machinery is concerned. Chinese doesn’t make particularly bad motors. Motors fail for a number of reasons namely overloading or overheating. I had a Craftsman Radial Arm Saw failed in the first week. The motor was make in the good U of A. That’s my fault for running a 50 feet 18 gauge extension cord. It causes the starting winding to run extra long causing overheating and smokes. Most hobby Air Compressors has a 10 or 15 % duty cycle you have to observe or the motor will cut out or smokes. Vacuum motor usually overheats due to clogged filters. Personally I always buy Bosch power tools if I can afford it.

All the tools in Harbor Freight are from china .. all junk.. have had to buy 3 microwaves in less than 4 years .. made in china.. Parts put into my car that were made in china failed or didn't work new. The workers there are very underpaid .. no benefits and they pollute the hell out of the earth as there is no EPA type governing body. Long hours poor treatment .. I am sure contributes to their lack of quality. I bought a lot of simple products through Alibaba for pet owners and they all fell apart in weeks. If its made in china its suspect..
