  • Join me in this fun mini project where we will be covering a hammer handle with alligator and I demonstrate the basic butt stitch. I'm using some left over alligator tail which has been wet moulded over a hammer handle and glued in place with contact adhesive. It makes for a very comfortable handle!

    I see you like fil au chinois. I bought years ago 2 spools, bought tiger thread, Vinymo MBT, but I found several months ago Twist Premium, probably Yu Fung linen thread and is got recently. I like it very much. I have so many other unwanted threads and now selling them by 20m. watching your review I bought French Titanium awl(great) and ordered 4Z pricking Iron(hopefully like). actually, when I was not a real leather craftsman, I made many knife cases, fishing reel cases and other stuff for my own use(I did a lot of outdoor activities). Learn myself looking at the stuff in books when there was no internet. Now youtube is like a school to learn anything. I learn some tricks and tips from your video too. Thanks again for the video.

    A clear and informative video. I am planning to leather wrap part of a wooden spar on a boat. What would you suggest to protect the leather from sun and rain? Thanks

      Thanks. I'm not aware a product that can protect regular leathers from extreme UV and salt water exposure, I'd be surprised if there was. You'll need to get marine grade leather designed for that purpose. J Wood Leathers sells it.

    Phil, thanks for the butt stitch program, I really learned a lot. Also, you said you were looking for more projects, and maybe you've already done it, but I've always wondered how they get that bright, shiny hard burnished look on veg tanned leather?

      Hello Jim. Yes I've already created a video course on that subject called 'Techniques Of The Edge Part 1'. More information available at www.leathercraftmasterclass.com

    Hi Phil , did you wet form the Alligator skin over the handle first then trim up n butt stitch? Great video fella 👍🏻 your choice of soundtrack is outstanding.

      @LeathercraftMasterclass  Před 5 lety +2

      Hi John, yes I dampened the leather slightly to get it to form better. Cheers for the compliments!

    Hypothetically, the underside should have a "ladder" design. So if you did this stitch "opposite" it should give an interesting visible "ladder stitch," correct?

      @LeathercraftMasterclass  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes I suppose it would, but I have never seen it. You could try wrapping a straight walled beer glass or something similar to find out!
