The ending of this story isn't surprising at all. At the end of each episode, they show you the final scene when the mother and son are dressed in funeral gowns. This opening song also says that if heaven has compassion, it is also merciless; love, at the end, is separation. So, in fact, the show tells you from the very beginning of episode one that this is a sad story.

Black was the funerary color at the time. So in fact, she was wearing a black dress with royal white decorations, a proper royal funerary dress for her role.

I don't think it is a sad story at all just a bittersweet ending considering they loved and lived out their lives together but will inevitably be separated by death.
It's Actually satisfying that after the movie they are both married in real life. It calms my sad soul to know that they are both happily married.🤗

I just can't let go of the two. Weiyoung and Touba Jun deserved better. The part when Touba Jun was dying and recited a poem that ended with, "Even through death my love won't die with me" PAINED SOOO MUCH HUHUHUHU.
Historical dramas just have to have a sad ending. Goodbye My Princess, Story of Yanxi Palace, The King's Woman, The Princess Weiyoung, even Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace. They always leave us hanging.

I’ve watched this drama 5 to 6 times and each time the ending has had me in tears. I love this drama so much- this melody is so lovely and to read the translation makes sense after watching the drama in it’s entirety.
I wish I spoke Mandarin because I am fairly sure that the translated captions in the drama don’t carry the same beauty of what is being said in it’s original language. (Since I’ve watched this and other Chinese dramas several times over, I’ve picked up a few words here and there and have noticed some words when translated, were translated slightly different that what was said.)

Rewatching it again after several years. I really love this drama even though the only way I cope with the ending is by telling myself they were actually immortals just down in the mortal realm for a love trial. IT'S FINE. WE'RE FINE. EVERYTHING IS FINE. They're together again somewhere else-- That's what I choose to believe.
I mean, the actors are married in real life, so your thoughts work out in part. Also that's a good way with dealing with it, lol. I do something like that at times.

This was the only drama I watched fully (it’s very long) and had me cry a river. I still get heartbroken rethink about it
There’s something in tragic ends that make the series unforgettable. I’ve cried tons and tons and still get heartaches thinking about this drama but that was a well done ending.

I love this series, the pace is very fast, unlike most Chinese Drama nowadays
Why is everyone so depressed about the ending? It’s a happy ending. They got married, became rulers and even had a kid together. It’s the perfect ending. Well I guess it just didn’t last very long but they were able to spend all that time together and make do with the time they had. They were more blessed than other couples who didn’t ended up together. And who knows how long lasted other happily ever after couple lasted as well. This one just happen to show you the aftermath instead of the typical got married, the end.

I read the novel afterward and loved how different it was from the show (main events remained but were discussed differently.) And Tuaba Yu in the novel is so much better than the show.
