This is a great film you don't hear about often. Like many of this era, it was way ahead of its time and makes you shudder at where the world is now. I never forgot this particular scene with Donald Sutherland, who would have been in his 30s at this time. RIP Mr. Sutherland.
This is absolute brilliance from Sutherland. He was given a magnificent piece of writing and managed to do it justice. So often the writing gets overlooked and all the fame or blame is bestowed on the actor(s) and/director(s). This film manages turn the label of a piece of work being "dated" into a good thing. It holds up to the test of time while serving as a time capsule. Satirizing the ideologies of the era. I agree with the previous comment suggesting Sutherland is deserving of an oscar for
this is the funniest movie of all time. i've never laughed as hard as i did the first time i saw it. either this or harold and maude is the best movie ever made. this scene is the trophy winner of the movie.
Nice ending I only heard a couple of words with a Canadian accent. What a lot of words to memorize hope he had a memorization bonus. Funny writing. Great delivery Mr. Sutherland a GOAT
Why this movie and scene have not been mentioned in any of the numerous tributes I've read in the last couple of days, I absolutely can't understand---it's exceptional.
Best movie ever made in America, together with "The Unforgiven" & "Casablanca". Thanks for posting it. God how it screwed me up when I was seventeen...
i use to watch the "my first glance at you told me you were not the type to obey" line over and over again...that look he gives to Patsy is just sick! lol the whole scene is brilliant though...not to mention he was so so so handsome!
"Betrayal too, is all right..." Somehow the worst ceremony ever performed and also the best. If I didn't know how the film ended, I would take it as a sign of a very good marriage ahead.
one of the wackiest films ever made. in a class by itself. Alan Arkin is brilliant at directing himself, as well as others .I saw it as a first run, in a theater .it's hilarious and very depressing at the same time. Sutherland looks the same as he did in Kelly's heroes .all the actors are great, especially Vincent Gardenia. brilliant crazy movie. I think the Cohen bros .had to have seen this at some point.
I haven't seen Gould's Marlowe in many years, but I don't recall being very impressed. Probably time for a second viewing if it ever appears on cable again. Considering how many channels are available now, it's a real shame that they all keep showing the same old crap again & again. And if an old classic gets re-done, for years you just see the new version, not the great original. "Rollerball" comes to mind, but there are plenty of examples where the updated version truly sucks the big one.
Actually I think this scene is an honest and neutral expression of atheism and if anyone looks at them in a bad light because of this.... it's alright!😂

Sutherland's funniest bit. RIP damn you'll be missed.
RIP. Had to look for this and share. Such an unknown and underrated performance.
RIP Alan Arkin ( the man who directed this masterpiece)
RIP again.

One of my favorite dark comedies of all time. Jules Feiffer is a genius.
I've watched this scene a dozen times and it never gets stale. Patsy's reaction is priceless.
Should have won an Oscar for this. RIP.
My Mom was friends with Jules Feiffer growing up in the Bronx in the 30's and 40's
This film is fireworks. One brilliant scene after another. It helps that the actors are up to it but really it's the writing that does it.
Thought of this the moment I heard of Sutherland’s passing. My favorite monologue ever.

I was about 15, and was prepared for it by BONNIE & CLYDE (before the rating system). this, was strictly R.

The hands in the pockets shows so much about the character
Hilarious movie! Thanks for posting.

The Gold Standard of dark comedies.

Everything you need to know, right here. ;)
The character reminds me of Alan Watts for some reason.
Worked at a theater soo funny and so dark. America can you relate?

Well they did give him Philip Marlow to work with and he did wonders with that role in my opinion.

So strangely profound... and yet it really, didnt say anything...
in that light, nothing is ever said in any scenario, everything is just as empty as your thoughts that fill the silence
Yep, that’s wedding ceremonies alright

I know this scene was literally only put in the movie to make atheists look bad but I'm honestly 100% like this in real life?

It’s a parody of existentialist philosophy and cultural relativism which were popular in academic circles at the time.
