Alexis Grunden I used to raise chicken. They watched tv, went to the bathroom with me. They'll come inside the house to ask for their feed. Allowed us to take their chicks. Chickens are awesome.
When I grew up we had 10 white leghorns like these. While we *could* hand-feed them, we soon learned they were very aggressive eaters. They'd hammer their beak into your hand which is quite scary for an 8 year old me. Plus when they laid on eggs there was no way we could get anywhere near them to take the eggs.
i bet your chickens did not like you because its near impossible to not be able to hand feed a chicken, you got they're right next to you and i can call my chickens when i feed them bread the hang out on or near our porch unless the off feeding(they go under and dust bath by the porch and wait once a day to get a slice of bread as the treat).

The person just said that the chicken is a good mother, didn't even mention the father, and roosters aren't exactly dedicated fathers since they're not made that way, unlike father swans for example. And just so you know, most fathers in the animal world don't stick around to take care of their offsprings. The mothers are the ones who have to defend them from other males, and do a great job at it, often injuring males and making them run away. Chickens are amazing mothers! they stay up to months without eating just sitting there day and night hatching their babies, it's truly inspiring and i admire chickens very much for how good mothers day are ❤️

@@clarissealexandra2439 Your right, but some roosters are good fathers! my family has a farm and we raise chickens and other animals, the roosters are always around the chicks and the mother and they let them eat first, there is competition between males when they're together and they fight sometimes, but the general rule is that each rooster stays around their own babies and the mother, like families. but that's probably because they're pets, in the wild i'm sure they would act like that

This is meant for some people who may be wondering: The chicks don't need their own food yet... they survive on the leftover yolk from their egg for a few days (just before hatching it is enveloped into their abdomen). They may try out eating, and especially with mom making those noises encouraging them to stay with her and bite at what she's biting at... but they are fine hanging out for now, letting her rest and eat what she is given

Broodie hens are impressive. I bought my first batch of birds online, but after being lazy, and short a few lost chickens years later , I let a hen sit. She raised the babies so much better than I could :)

I remember seeing this on the family farm. We made sure the grain in the feed for the chicks was crushed to make it easier for the chicks to swallow.
Yes we used to give ours chick crumbs. Interestingly, a chick doesn't need to eat immediately, as it has the yolk inside it which is absorbs over the first little while after hatching. I used to work with reptiles and one of our monitor lizards ate defrosted (dead) day old chicks. With one bite there would be a yolk splat over the wall. Gross I know, but it's true.

I think it's such an underrated fact that people don't point out that the hen trusts you enough to be near and even touch her chicks yet alone her nest.

Chickens raised for meat and eggs do not live good lives unfortunately. They are mutilated without anaesthetics. The tips of their sensitive beaks are cut off. Male chicks in the egg industry are killed when they are only a day old because they can't lay eggs. The hens are killed when their egg production slows down and they are no longer profitable. Even free range often simply means the chicks are kept in overcrowded sheds with little sunlight, rather than cages. They want to live and they suffer just like you and me. You have a choice. You don't have to eat them, you can spare their lives by going vegan. Don't support the industries which abuse and kill these animals.
I do love chickens and I understand the horrors they go through, but the only reason I haven't decided to go vegan yet is because one less customer doesn't mean they'll stop producing.
Comandobunny By going vegan you will make a huge difference. You will save hundreds of lives per year. And you could even end up inspiring your friends or family to go vegan too. By buying animal products you are contributing to the demand for animal products. Like in any industry the products depend on demand. More demand = more supply, more animals killed. It might seem like one person can't make a difference but this is how change happens. One by one we make up many. There are millions of vegans out there and the number is rising. Go vegan!

I also raise chickens, also with pheasants, quail, partridge and more, over 10,000 birds and I am a qualified vet. I assure you they will NOT crush up maize for their chicks, chickens do not chew or crush their food, they swallow it whole. Their beaks are not strong nor designed for it. Please feed young chicks high protein crumbles, they WILL starve if only given whole maize.

When your mom tells you that you are having Pizza for lunch:
1 hour old? I don't think so. I breed chickens - it takes chicks a good 12-24 hours to fluff up and walk properly. An hour after a chick hatches it still looks wet and its toes are swollen. It can't do anything but waddle around awkwardly. They spend their first 12-24 hours under their mothers, warming up and recovering from the hatch. Those chicks are 1-3 days old. Not hours old.

It really depend on the circumstances, how it hatched, how strong it is, what breed it is. But usually they do not eat right away(though some drink!)
