It's not a protest song. It's a way of life song to abide by- a daily affirmation. "Give Peace A Chance" by Lennon would be apropos to a protest song more than Imagine but that's also a song to live by.

Aged 9 I grew up with The Beatles. I'm nearly 65 now & they are still the greatest band of all time. I remember the day John Lennon got shot. His death devastated me. I've never cried so long & so hard over a musician, who's pointless murder affects me to this day. I will never get over it.....I have a very rare vinyl double album which interviews all 4 Beatles. One on each side of the albums. On John Lennon's he is asked why are you doing things for peace with Yoko that has people calling you both clowns ? & John replied - Well that's ok because other people who spoke for peace, like Martin Luther King and Gandhi .....got shot.

The absolute excitement waiting for the album to be released and hearing it for the first time , when there first film A Hard Days Night was released queuing outside the cinema for what seemed like hours to see it for the first time . They changed music forever I am now in my late 60s whenever I hear Beatles music memories come flooding back to happier simpler times . This song is so familiar - I've listened to it loads of times over the years and I had the album. You talk a lot of sense, guys, we should keep striving for peace, helping to save the planet and basically treating people the way we would want to be treated. A lot of people don't think like that - it seems to me that some people think only about themselves and don't consider how their actions impact on others. It is such a materialistic world we live in now - when I was young, we were told if you can't afford something, don't buy it and we didn't, you saved up for it. Not now, everything is on credit and some people don't seem to care how much debt they collect. Whoops, I seem to be on a soapbox - sorry about that. Anyway, John Lennon was a master of the songs he wrote - he and Paul McCartney together wrote some wonderful songs for the Beatles. I think he makes a lot of sense with this song. Very interesting reaction, guys, many thanks.

Because, as you know, he would have had to in order to bring about some form of financial equality, as pure Socialism requires. Of course, practical Socialism does not operate this way at all now does it. John would have made sure which side of the tax ledger he was on. As I've come to understand over the years it was Paul who was the work alcoholic and provided much of the motivation to get the boys to move on to do their next albums. IMAGINE by John "Lennon was inspired by several poems from wife Yoko Ono's 1964 book Grapefruit... Lennon later explained that the song "should be credited as a Lennon/Ono song. A lot of it - the lyric and the concept - came from Yoko, but in those days I was a bit more selfish, a bit more macho, and I sort of omitted her contribution, but it was right out of Grapefruit." And "Lennon composed the song one morning in early 1971. It was written on a Steinway piano, in a bedroom at his Tittenhurst Park home in Ascot. Yoko Ono watched on as he composed the melody, chords and most of the lyrics, and nearly completed the whole song in one short writing session."
Taken from "The Story of... 'Imagine' by John Lennon" by Tom Eames (October 2020).

As much as I like John, the songwriting could never have been what it was without McCartney. The two balanced each other perfectly like yin and yang. And the Beatles could never have been without all four of them. It was just one of those lightning in a bottle combinations that never was before and never will be again. Definitely sent to give humanity a message and to unite people.

John Lennon and Paul McCartney quit writing songs together during the early stages of their Beatles career. They did seek advice on a chord or a note or on a lyric or on a verse here and there. However, Lennon may have not been as great of a songwriter without McCartney just as much as McCartney would not have been a great songwriter without Lennon- because they were more in competition with each other as Paul McCartney states in an interview: "He and John had a habit of “answering” each other’s songs. “He’d write ‘Strawberry Fields,’ ” Paul explained. “I’d go away and write ‘Penny Lane’
to compete with each other. But it was very friendly competition.... he went on to note that their competition made them “better and better all the time.” It goes both ways.
"..As in so many from the Beatles years, it’s easy to get distracted by the idea of John and Paul composing independently. The notion that the two need to be understood as individual creators, in fact, has become the contemporary “smart” take on them. “Although most of the songs on any given Beatles album are usually credited to the Lennon-McCartney songwriting team... that description is often misleading... John and Paul “shared songwriting credits but little else... their ‘partnership’ was more of a competition than a collaboration.”
So the two did balance each other out perfectly as you state like yin-yang and add yang-yin as well,

I would like to say that I’m not sure where you guys live. But in watching and hearing you it makes me know what I’ve always known and we all know that we’re on the same. We sit here and enjoy music together and share the same deep beliefs. And it’s these people who are these people running our countries creating these nightmares. Crazy. Because all of us sitting in our rooms listening to each other listening to the same music feeling the same deep feelings and responding in the same way to almost everything. We’re certainly not the ones wanting war. We’re certainly not the ones creating all the pollution. We all think alike. But yet countries fight each other. Do we even know why? Listen to John’s Revolution. I loved it back then. During that time a lot of people talked about Revolution. But John had the guts to come out and say what he said. He got a lot of flak from that song at the time. Another thing about this song in this time. John was a huge activist against the Vietnam war. I’m not sure if you all know that. But if not here you go

He HOPES some day you will join him, but it is a pro-peace song without being "anti" anything. Presenting radical ideas wrapped in a beautiful melody and voice, like only he could do. PEACE.
