    Wow! A bit of nostalgia. Thanks! My father ran a computer store from the early 80's on, and we sold lots of Kaypros. I aligned several floppy drives using the alignment disk and tools.

    topics of interest from your list -- AIM 65, Kaypro, Osborne, more floppy repairs

      More floppy drive repairs? I'm done with those ... although, small teaser, one of the Osborne 1 floppy drives is malfunctioning as well, so maybe ... ;-) The Osborne 1 is coming soon, and the AIM 65 is propably due in November, there I really need to really drill down and get my hands dirty.

    Wow. A Kaypro. Amazing. I haven't seen one of these since I was a child. My father took me to the local computer store at the time to look at it. We came close to buying it but ended up getting the Apple IIplus. Been an Apple user ever since. Thanks for bringing this old machine back to life!

      A friend of mine had a Kaypro 4 since new. It was under the table in his shop about fifteen years ago. He didn't want to sell it.

    I looked through my archives form the late 70's when I was designing and manufacturing pre IBM business computers (CP/M 2.2), and located my old Tandon alignment floppy disk.
    Labled: 204/2D 96/100 T.P.I P/N 800438
    This floppy was used to do precision alignment on the TM100-4 drives that we used.
    BTW - The Tandon floppy disk drive service manual is on line and available.

      I read about those alignment floppies, and also the service manual, especially the part about the "cats eyes" on the oscilloscope, which I understood like it's only working with this specific alignment disks. This would be the most accurate procedure, whereas the method described here is a "well enough but not perfect" method.

    I don't often hear of problems with TM-100 drives. They certainly aren't the easiest drives to work on but they are very much bulletproof.

    • @THEPHINTAGECOLLECTOR
      @THEPHINTAGECOLLECTOR  Před rokem

      I crossed three TM-100 drives in the past six months, and all of them had some issues, but it was mechanical issues for the most. I'm totally fine with that, as long as it still can be fixed, which so far was always the case.

      @@THEPHINTAGECOLLECTOR I have one in my 5150 which came out of an industrial enclosure and which I don't believe had ever been used. It has noisy spindle bearings but I am loathe to disassemble it just to replace the bearings.

      @THEPHINTAGECOLLECTOR  Před rokem

      @@douro20 you may want to check out m.czcams.com/video/JrGWRjTFqps/video.html
      It gives an example of noise reduction after relubing the mechanics.
      It‘s tedious to disassemble everything, but any kind of noise is result of friction, which can eventually damage the drive.
      And the bearings do not necessarily need replacement. Soaking in WD-40 and then applying lubricant may effectively revive stuck bearings.

    Something I'm surprised you didn't catch given your knowledge of floppy drives. You used a PC style floppy cable, with the flipped section, in a Shugart system. Then you used M0 for drive select when D0 didn't work? With that cable, D1 will give the drive zero response that you want, same as done on a PC. Better to use a straight through cable and D0 though.

    • @THEPHINTAGECOLLECTOR
      @THEPHINTAGECOLLECTOR  Před rokem

      Ha! Now you caught me! Obviously my research was not good enough 🙂
      Actually I'm not aware that this kind of system shall use straight cables only, it's the very first system of the pre-PC era I've ever touched.
      So you suggest I shall add another connector before the twist, and then trying again with D0 = closed instead of M0 = closed?
      Anyway, now that you mention it, the original cable was actually a straight cable. Though obviously not the original Kaypro cable, but an aftermarket cable specific for the Gotek, with no additional card edge connector for a second drive.
      So coming from a PC world, I wrongly assumed it must be the twisted-style cable.
      But then again, I'm surprised it now actually works with the twisted cable, when it rather should not, if I understand you correctly.

    • @lilbill6089
      @lilbill6089 Před rokem

      @@THEPHINTAGECOLLECTOR The motor signal can be used, but the drive select is the correct one. There are times when the motor signal is on when the other drive is selected.
      With no twist the A: drive is D0, the B: drive D1. This was the original way to set up floppies. The twist is actually an IBM oddball.
      You don't need to add another connector. You can set the drive to D1 and it should work.
      Note that there were some PC compatibles that didn't use the twist, including many Tandys.
      The twist was so IBM would have less parts inventory while allowing a drive to be installed in either position without having to change jumpers.

    • @THEPHINTAGECOLLECTOR
      @THEPHINTAGECOLLECTOR  Před rokem

      @@lilbill6089 Youre absolutely correct here. I was totally confusing things, mixing PC-style with non-PC system. Bottom line: It works with a straight cable and S0 = closed, or with the twisted cable, and S0 = open and M0 = closed. The video at czcams.com/video/RoUg9EPU5zI/video.html should set things right. Thanks for pointing at this misconception :-)
