A herd of Asian elephants in southwest China's Yunnan Province has stunned the world with an unprecedented northbound trek, sparking curiosity, concern and widespread debate. Following their "long march" of more than a year, the giants are now slowly moving southward.
Back in June, a CGTN crew followed the elephants on their tracks. The journey provides a unique insight into how local authorities are responding to the challenge of keeping both the animals and the people they come across safe. The crew also traveled to the original habitat of the elephants in Xishuangbanna to learn more about China's efforts to protect the endangered species and defuse conflict between the animals and humans.

Elephants have an innate instinct to migrate. Confining them in restricted areas will not work. Elephants need large areas where to roam. This is how nature works. As the elephants are very destructive with respect to vegetation they consume because of their voracious apatite, their migration to other areas gives time for the areas the elephants had previously herded upon to regenerate its vegetation. A circular migration system must be created whereby the elephants are allowed enough space to herd in circular fashion until the time that the vegetation of their previous herding grounds have been fully regenerated and replenished with vegetation whereby the elephants would again turn back to their original feeding pastures.

What a delightful and positive approach to the wandering herd. It makes my heart smile to see people working hard to find ways for both people and elephants to enjoy this long trek. Hearing people say things like crops can be grown again but once the elephants are gone it will be forever. And people happy to work in tourism available because of the elephants. Such a great thing to be planning food supplies and using parked trucks to keep the elephants away from trouble... this is one of the best stories I've ever heard of in which no one blames the elephants. I cannot say that people in my country would treat them so lovingly. Huge congratulations are due for all those working to make this journey positive for all involved!

Salute also to the government for providing the affected families as well. Maybe its better that these people shall be relocated elsewhere? Far from the migration trail. I am from an area where interaction with wild Asian elephants is a regular phenomenon. It's where the Gangetic plain meets the Himalayan foothills in Eastern India. They roam across a very large area, including the neighboring countries viz Nepal and Bhutan. Population encroachment to the wildlife habitat is a problem here. I like the approach shown by the authority as shown in this video, though it's very difficult to continue with this endeavor with rising number of similar herds. Only if we can vacate more space for them with our sustained urbanization, there can be a chance of peaceful coexistence. And even that has a tipping point. An optimum equilibrium has to be defined later.
