  • Finally, I've found the courage to record my first English-spoken vlog! You'll hear me talk about the differences between a flexible and a fixed seal of panflute pipes. Both have pros and cons, the best choice depends on your personal taste as well as proficiency.
    In this video, I use my current favourite which is a Popescu bamboo instrument, a classic from the time the panflute first became known in western Europe. I compare it to the new model Gibonus panflute, which has a flexible tuning system.
    Editing I heard myself compare entire continents to countries, spotted some odd vocabulary and saw some really funny faces. Bear with me; I'll get better at it with every added video.

    @nadjaspooren, dankie for this very educational and also humbly presented information! I'm looking to buy my first pan flute without regret. I have played regular flute, clarinet and piano before, so think it is doable. Like the sound of your closed off one on the left.
    I am leaning towards an 18 or 22 tube, bamboo, not sure which key to get? I want a decent range like how a piano has many octaves, so that I am not limited in song choice. I wish to learn: El Condor Pasa (and other songs played by Leo Rojas), Braveheart - Princess theme, Lambada, Moon River, and others. I also sung as an alto-soprano in choir once, so really love & appreciate that you mentioned the G-key as comparable so I have an idea! I was also looking at Romanian vs. Peruvian vs. Chinese. Notice the Chinese ones I'm seeing are in E or F key - does that mean they are higher sounding? Also, are you able to make a sharp or flat sound on the same tube? Are you able to make a trill sound - I hear a prrrrr sound in some songs and want to know if that depends on the instrument itself or the persons skill?
    Also, it will be interesting going from piano with low notes on left and high notes on right, to the opposite setup, as I'm looking at right handed pan flutes. 😆
    Thanks for taking the time to demonstrate and explain! Love from 🇿🇦 🇨🇦

    Hello Nadja, thank you for your video! I've been learning to play the panflute for to years now. I have a Gibonus student panflute tuned in C-major. Now I'm thinking about going for a higher model. Which scale would you recommend as the most versatile one (is it G-major)? Is it true that at the end of the day you use several panflutes? Thank you for your help and greetings from Poland!

      @NadjaSpooren  Před 3 lety

      Hi Piotr, yes, most players have several instruments they switch between, depending on the genre of music and the sound quality they are looking for. That is why it is best to build up a collection that is as versatile as possible. A G alto would be very good to add to a C tenor; it gives you the option of exploring balkan traditional music, as well as folklore from Western-Europe such as Irish tunes and Medieval instrumental music. I'd use the C flute for classical and contemporary music mostly. A Bass would be the next step to completing your collection :).

      @@NadjaSpooren Dear Nadja, thank you for your detailed explanation, I do appreciate that. For the time being, I'm thinking about upgrading my instrument from the Student Gibonus (C-major) as I've been learning to play the panflute for two years now and now I know that I want to continue. For the time being, I'm thinking about one instrument that could be quite versatile. I hear that those that come with G tuning are most common among panflute players (is that right?). I'm more into Andean style music. I'm particularily fond of lower tones in the panflute. Do you think that Gibons G bass could be a good choice? Once again, thank you for your help.

    hi Nadja i am a flute maker and i want to make my self a tradition measurement pan flute
    i had just made my self a 3 octave bass one from indian bansuri flute material -i had made it on the wider side so i can produce the low octave with my ambusher trained on side flutes but i can see the normal diameter of most pan flute is smaller if you have a caliber and you can spend 5-10 minute to right me a list of the tubes by note inside and out side caliber of those pan flutes i will thank you very much ----i have bamboo redy for the job and lots of maple pipes reject from years of making a pentatonic soprano for the Waldorf education

    Interesting how some are arranged with the high resguster oriented both othe on the right hand like a key board or reversed. Are they traditionally oriented in the reverse direction than a western key board, with the smaller pipes on the left hand?

    • @NadjaSpooren
      @NadjaSpooren  Před rokem +1

      yes, traditionally the left hand is at the smallest pipes. It makes sense if you consider that with other wind instrument, the left hand is higher/closer to the mouth as well.

    Hello Nadja, could you explain to me what is the difference between the Zamfir embouchure and the double embouchure? Is there a difference in the sound? Why does Zamfir use that embouchure? Thanks and greetings from Chile!!

    • @NadjaSpooren
      @NadjaSpooren  Před rokem +2

      What do you mean by a double embouchure? I'm not sure how to answer that question, to be honest!
      I do know Zamfir has a very distinct sound, achieved by having a very low-cut labium on both sides of the pipe. If you were to look at a panflute on the playing-end, most of the time the side of the pipes facing the player is lower than the sides furthest from the player. Zamfir's panflutes have an equally low or lower far side as the side that touches the lower lip. This gives that beautiful, haunting dark sound colour he plays with. I'm always drawn to clear and decisive sound colours, but the Popescu instrument in this video is darker in its own right, something I've also grown to love over the years.

      @@NadjaSpooren Thank you very much Nadja for answering. I was referring to the embouchure on the inside and the wear on the outside, but your answer is clear to me. Thank you so much!!

    How long do you learn the Panflute?

    • @NadjaSpooren
      @NadjaSpooren  Před 2 lety

      I've been playing the panflute for 24 years now.
      If your question is how long it takes to learn to play, that depends on what you want to learn. Getting a basic sound should be possible in 30 minutes (with a teacher to guide you!). Getting the sound exactly the way you want it to be... well, I'm still learning ;).

      Hi SajZa! I can't recommend any specific stores in the UK, since all the builders I know are located on the continent. Shipping and customs will differ per supplier. The very reliable brands of bamboo panflutes I can recommend are Hofmann Panfloetenbau and Preda Panflutes. They have different ranges and finishes. Hofmann has several price points as well, of which even the student range is amazing. If you need more information, please sen me in email at nadja@panfluitpraktijk.nl.
