I've been on the 5:2 lifestyle for 6 months now. I started at 305 lbs, I'm now 265, so 40 lbs in 6 months. It was a little tough at first, but now it's a piece of cake. I didn't call it a diet for a reason, it's now just my lifestyle. I still have quite a bit more to lose, but i'm so damn confident now that I can do it, it's not even a question anymore. I suggest watching the video in question, it's a great watch. Good luck to ya!

In 2 months, I lost 30 pounds. Over all, I lost 45 pounds... with out exercising... I was exercising 5 months, 5 t,times a week, and didn't lose a pound.... the day I started the Fast Diet was the day I stop exercising....

Few tips for your Fast days:
    1) Try not to have lots of little meals to make up your 500 (females) 600 (males) cals.
    a) it's likely to make you more hungry
    b) your body burns fat and goes into 'cellular repair (one of the best benefits of fasting)' after around 8+ hours, so it's best to have 2 decentish sized meals (ie 200 cal breakfast or lunch and 300 cal dinner), or even just 1 big meal, to optimize weight loss.
    2) On Fast days makes sure you get some protein. It will fill you up. Get some carbs but don't make them your main source.
    3) Drink lots of water - Often you're not actually hungry, you're just dehydrated (we get water from food).
4)Try not to drink lots of diet soft drinks as there's some research which suggests the artificial sweeteners can initiate sugar craving.
    5) If you're feeling really hungry, give it 10-15 minutes before reaching for food. Hunger doesn't so much as build as it comes in waves.
    6) If you must eat more, grab for some filling vegetables like Broccoli, eat it raw if you can.
    7) Always know that tomorrow (or in X number of hours) you can have pretty much what you want. You aren't starving to death!
Don't do this if you're still growing (ie a teenager) or growing someone else (ie pregnant/breast feeding), you don't want to stunt growth. If you're overweight as a teenager, exercise and cut down on sugar (tho eat as much fruit as you want- the fibre in fruit protects you from the weight gain too much sugar creates) and look on the internet for how much sugar is actually in these supposed 'healthy' low fat foods. The answer is far too much
Also, if you're diabetic, I would suggest easing into it and/or speaking to your Dr first

I'm on this regime - it works and it's easy! On my five-days I eat normally and on my two-days I have one biscuit for breakfast, a fruit salad for lunch and for dinner a salad with a boiled egg and some tuna (in brine) or a slice of cold meat, black tea/coffee without sugar. Or if it's cold out - it's surprising what you can put in a slow cooker and stay under 300 calories per portion. The first couple of two-days are a little uncomfortable, but the body seems to adjust and it soon feels refreshing to fast moderately. It's not natural to have a constant food supply and natural is always best.

Just thought I'd share my experience: I started 12/1/17 its now 3/1/18 and I've lost 12 lbs. I started at 127 lbs though, so not over weight which does make it harder to shed but I like have a 6 pack now! Point being, it's also great way to turn your kinda-fit body into a fit AF body. I also feel like I opened a different part of my brain: I'm not scared of being hungry nor do I experience hunger the same. It's awesome and I'd recommend it for anyone.

I just want to thank you 🙏🏼 for this video. I’m 45 and like you gained 50 lbs during pregnancy and while my son is fully grown, I have struggled my entire life post-pregnancy to try and get back to my pre-pregnancy body (which like you is a size 4-6...I’m not very tall so at 5’4” that’s normal for me). Like you, I have been a size 10 for most of my 20s and 30s and despite so many (sooooo many) diets and times when I’ve exercised like a mad woman, NOTHING has worked 😞
    .
You’ve given me so much hope tho bc your situation and even your body composition/size is identical to mine. And I too love wine! I started the 5:2 last week and came across this video as I’ve been doing research. 👌🏼❤️
    .
Btw, speaking of tips & tricks for future readers... years ago I read “French woman don’t get fat” and they use fasting to “reset” their system when they gain a bit of weight. On fast days, the writer advises you to consume leek broth whenever you feel hungry. It has at most 15 cals and is very satisfying. So, if interested, boil 2 leek stalks in 2 liters (8 cups) of water. I add a 1/4 tsp salt. Once boiling, reduce heat & simmer for 20 min. This broth is VERY helpful during fasting days. 😁

I started on the 5:2 last week and so far i have dropped 4 pounds already. I am planning to weigh myself tomorrow morning and keep track of my progress each week. I also ordered the book and watched the documentary. Im excited because i have tried so many diets before and i do exercise and its been a while since i have seen the weight drop so i have hope and believe that this is the diet that will finally get me to my goal weight! I plan to also maintain this diet once i reached my goal! Thank you Sonja!

Thank you for uploading this video, you are SO lovely and down to earth and I feel like I can relate to you! I am obsessed with food, I LIVE to eat. I feel like an addict! I've constantly struggled with the idea that I have to chose between my love of delicious food and being slim and slinky. Yesterday I had my first fasting day on the 5:2 diet and I am extremely surprised how easy it actually was, I don't think I've stayed under 500 calories in 5 years... sure I had cravings, and they were raging in the evening but I laughed at them and stayed strong. I'm dedicated to giving this my best shot and knowing that you only have to hold out till the morning makes ALL the difference. You get the benefits of feeling in control of yourself , instead of feeling weak willed all the time and feeling like you're punishing yourself and all the guilt...... I think psychologically this diet is so much healthier, more positive and will be easier to follow in the long run!

We also decided to fast Mondays and Thursdays to loose weight and religious purposes. You look great and thanks for sharing.

I fast 20-24 hours 3 days a week...its what works for me and I am trying to maximize my fat loss. The other thing about fasting is that its flexible and doesn't consume your every thought. Great video....please keep posting, there seems to be a shortage of clear thinkers on IF on youtube.

My opinion here, but I think that this is going to be the most sustainable thing anyone can do, if you've never tried it and are curious. Three key factors: 1) do clean up your 5 eating days when you're not on the 'diet'. That really just means cooking your own food, getting rid of junk food. Get it out of the house. 2) You have two days a week when you diet. Keep in mind that they're not consecutive days and you're shooting 500 cals a day, a little more if you're aggressively exercising (I mean weights or spin classes, etc). 3) Eat protein on your diet days: eggs, tuna, That fills the belly and wards off hunger. I've just started and am nearing my first 10lbs gone. BTW, I feel like this is a good approach for maintaining your weight too. I'll try that when I get to my goal BF%.

Thanks for giving your insights on the Fast Diet. I think it's great that you mentioned the mental benefits as I believe they are one of the most important gifts this life style gives you, especially when it comes to making food choices on non fast days. I have been fasting for 6 weeks and I am constantly amazed at the results, physically, mentally and emotionally.

On Facebook I belong to Appetite Correctness a group run by Angela Redekop. Her story is amazing because she's lost 300+ pounds.
She fasts for like 19 hours and then for 5 hours she eats what she likes. At first I thought i can't fast that many hours then pig out for 5.
But in listening to your CZcams channel for the first time 6:25am 10/12/18 I could follow the 2 days of just 500 calories. I suffer from Anxieties with a non existent appetite and this feeling at its worst has lasted 4 months. Then missing alot.( i stay out of Fb ) I return to the World of the Living.
    Insomnia sets in; ankles swell
and my Appetite returns. And up and down chaotic way of living.

Thank you. I’ve been doing the carb cycling diet where I would eat only meat and protein strictly no carbs for an entire month and take a break about 6 months to do it again. I started right before the lockdowns in 2020 and did it for a little over 2 years. I was 5’10 and 208 pounds when I first started and now I’m down to 157 pounds and I am a 31 year old male. I stated to get kidney pain from the protein diet so I stopped but was afraid to gain all of the weight back. I found the 5:2 diet and thought it was very doable and easier then what I was doing before. I researched a lot of high density low calorie foods so I would feel full even though my limit was only 500 calories on the day of fast. I usually eat soups, boiled eggs since they keep me full for very little calories. Seems to work well and even though I eat a lot on other days I seem to get back to my weight and even lost some here and there! Also I noticed it’s much better to eat your bigger heavier meals in the morning than night.

On my 7th Day of Fasting, and I've lost maybe 4kg already, coupled with some exercise. I almost think the scale is faulty as I can scarcely believe it works so well. At 31, it's the first diet I've ever tried, and hopefully it will be the last one I need.
To echo you: You neither starve completely, nor overeat on the next feed day - it just doesn't seem to happen for whatever physiological/psychological reasons. You feel awesome too for getting through a fast day and the first thing you even eat always seem to taste extra good.

One of the most common responses I hear from people is "No way, I love food too much". The thing is, you enjoy food WAY more when you do 5:2 because you appreciate it that much more when you have to restrict your intake occasionally.

I've already dropped the weight but I did it by learning to eat the right foods. Fasting is something I tried before, but just saw this show last night. Looks great--as in it might be just the ticket for everyone who wants to keep eating all the crap foods out there. That is mega powerful. "Fasting" with a 500-calorie "meal" should be rather easy as I've only fasted with zero calories before-which ain't so easy, but is tolerable for 24 hours.

Love your video! You look amazing! Question for you..are you still eating this way? I did this in the past and lost 30 lbs! I felt great! Then I let someone's negative comments get the better of me. So I stopped and gained it all back and more. I'm starting again. Hopefully it works as well as it did for me in the past. Thanks again for your video!

So so great to see this video, my granny has been doing the 5:2 diet for a couple of years now and had great results after years and years of struggling with her weight, my mum is also playing around with it to and even though not committed to it all the time she is seeing results. Im just finishing my first fast day and can totally see how this is manageable!!! I had Oatmeal for breakfast, sautéed mushrooms and spinach for lunch, an apple, a coffee and mashed cauliflower with parmesan for dinner, Its really okay! Im excited to see how it goes! xx

One thing the other videos about the 5 2 fast don't explain that you did, is how it's really hard for the first two weeks and then it gets a lot easier after that. I am so glad to hear cause this is day one and in having cravings but you've hel0ed motivate me and I'm gonna do this !

    • @georgeorwell7149

Rachel Smith - there are 2 camps regarding how fasting works. One is fasting is "calorie reduction" and the other is the hormone theory, when insulin levels are low on fast days. Insulin is a fat storing hormone, so the lower it is, the more fat you will burn without exercise. This is also how the ketogenic diet works, by mimicking the fasted state even though people are still eating foods low in carbs. It doesn't matter which method you believe works, calories or carbs, the fact is that it works. Low carb diets will help fasting because they cause you to not be hungry, so doing this fast with a keto diet or modified keto diet (like cyclical keto), can really help prevent hunger on fast days.

I think the fast diet is easy because it does not rely on complicated calorie counting.
Calorie counting definitely works but it takes a lot of effort.
The 5:2 diet just keeps things simple, basically no eating Monday or Thursday - I don't go with the 500 calorie meal as for me it's simpler just not to eat on Monday and Thursday.
Monday and Thursday are good days because I am less likely to go out for a meal on those days.

Awesome! I'm looking to do the Fasting-Mimicking Diet, which is just once-monthly cycles of 5-7 days of eating about 1000 calories the first day and 700-750 calories the remaining 4-6 days. Valter Longo is the lead longevity researcher at USC in California who has had amazing research results with this diet. I'm personally doing it not just for optimal weight, hunger regulation, and lean body mass gains, but also for its potential to reverse autoimmune disease, regenerate every type of cell in every nook and cranny in the body, and to aid in detoxification.
The 5:2 Diet I think is excellent as well, although I think everything exists on a gradient scale. Water fasting over long periods of time shows absolutely miraculous benefits, this FMD shows excellent stuff, and the 5:2 some pretty awesome results. It all depends on how active you have to be in life, how serious you are about preventing, treating, or reversing diseases in your past, present, and future as well. Since I work and am saving vacation days, I'm not going to be doing a water fast anytime soon, I will be doing this cycle (as well as the 5:2 diet perhaps on off weeks) once a month continuously if this first one goes well. The benefits are just astounding.

16:8 is pretty easy. I stop eating at 8PM and don't eat again until 12noon. Then eat anything I want until 8PM. So I'm not eating for 16 hours at a time. I'm 58. I maintain body fat under 20% with out any problem. After 8 hours from your last meal, the body starts cranking up HGH levels and many other positive benefits. So weight loss is just one of many benefits of fasting.

Great video. I have 2 questions.
    1. Theoretically if we stop eating for example, at 6pm the night before if it's a day aka 24 hours. Shouldn't we be able to eat after 6pm the day after? I make it all day but struggle around the evening.
    2. I heard it was 650 calories or is it 500 for women and 650 for men?
    Thanks in advance
