  • Andrew Shouldice is the independent developer and sole visionary behind the action-adventure game Tunic, wherein you play a fox exploring a sprawling, isometric fantasy world, lovingly nostalgic in both its style and structure. Andrew will be talking about his "hidden in plain sight" design approach to Tunic, outlining the personal philosophies and motivations behind its development. Join us to hear about how he achieved in Tunic the specific, universal feeling from the early days of our youth, learning to play video games for the first time - reading their inscrutable instruction manuals, mastering their ever-deepening mechanics, discovering and unravelling their multi-layered secrets - and other types of knowledge-related joy that games are able to offer us.
This talk was filmed live at the NYU Game Center in Downtown Brooklyn on Thursday, October 27th, 2022

Andrew is a brilliant man. My daughter and I beat the game using the Golden Path. Tunic is a once in a decade achievement. To think an indie game achieved what titles like Zelda a Link to the Past did is astonishing! He mixed the best elements from my favorite games like Myst with the robust note taking and attention to world detail.

Fantastic talk overall! I love Tunic, and many of your goals are my aspirations, too. The person who mentioned Meg Jayanth's 80 Days GDC talk hit on a key topic: there is a fundamental difference between the discovery and joy associated with exploring a thing in and of itself and with the equivalent scripted experience. Your work on Tunic is a true gift to everyone, especially those who've never had the chance to understand a thing far enough to have that sort of aha moment.
