The JRPG Renaissance continues
Unicorn overload is going to be RPG of the year.
No
My JRPG gaming backlog has extended quite a bit since following your videos.
Recently beat FFVI pixel remaster, FFXVI, Sea of Stars, FF7 Remake, and Star Ocean 2R.
Next up: Tales of Arise, FF7 Rebirth and FF9
FF9 is my favorite of all the FF games. I really hope you enjoy it!
Octopath travler and chained echoes :)
@@BustaDeluxe Loved Chained Echoes - and Octopath Traveler 2 is on my backlog!
@@MigLMariano you will love this according to your history of games you finished ff9 will also be great but I would love to see a good remake in pixel art grafics
FF6 is my favourite of the series and I’m glad it’s still being enjoyed my new players today. I’m currently enjoying FF7 remake and then on to Rebirth.
Lolz pink shirt made me notice kirby just chilling in the background 😄 😊
what a list. I can't believe how amazing this year has been already
It's absolutely STACKED!
@@davidvinc that thumbnail is STACKED!!! whoooa boy
Another solid list David. And to think, we're barely a third into the year but we got this much. Plus, with likes of Eiyuden Chronicles, Sandland, & Saga Emerald Beyond on the horizon. Guys, it's the year of the RPG!
The mini games were mandatory in OG FF7 too...
Doesnt mean they had to keep it that way
There weren't a bajillion of them though. They were cute at first, but then when I had to do like 4 of them just to get a swimsuit in Costa Del Sol.. Not a happy camper.
That was annoying lol @davidvinc
Hi, David! Thank you for another great video :) I'd place Zoria: Age of Shattering somewhere on the list too.
This year has been soooo good for us! I legit have had trouble putting aside the gamer budget because the jrpgs just keep releasing lol.
Been doing a lot of backlog catch-up this year thus far, but that just means when I get to these soon, I have a ton to look forward to!
so excited to revisit the Grandia games!
Fantastic list!!! I can’t believe we have this much amazing JRPG goodness and it’s only APRIL! How!!!???
I know, right?! It’s crazy!
It’s only April and we’re already eating this good. Looking forward to the rest of ‘24.
Some awesome games on this list. Just wondering if you have heard of Pixel Noir? Game looks interesting and would be awesome to cover it in a future video.
Really wanna try Granblue just waiting for a price drop. Unicorn Overlord just cements Vanillaware even more in my eyes. They've literally never put out a bad title. Really enjoyed P3 Reload and FF7 Rebirth this year also.
I hope they continue the Unicorn Overlord franchise and add a lot of customization options like more branching promotions 😁
It would be a first for vanillaware, so far they never did a sequel/franchise out of any of their games.
I agree that unicorn overlord would be a welcome exception though :)
@@yodastitch4227 Yeah i have played a lot of their games since the ps2 era and all of em don't have a sequel only remasters.
Damn David, you a beefcake lvl 99. You look like Super Saiyan Rose in this vid.
"Time flows like a river, and history repeats".
A line that's always stuck with me also.
So many great games!!! I'm about halfway through Unicorn Overlord right now and I love it so much. I completely agree with you about Rebirth; overall it was fantastic but somewhere in the middle I felt like I was getting overloaded with the mini games.
The not being able to just buy a swimsuit thing in Costa Del Sol was ridiculous
@@davidvinc OMG! YES!!! Costa Del Sol was the slowest part of the game for me.
Its been an amazing year already for JRPGs, ive had to hold of on 100% games to be able give time to other great games.
Happy anniversary to you
Love from Belgium 🇧🇪♥️
I started Unicorn Overlord this week (Monday) and I'm already over 20 hours in
Same. It's so, so good. Big GOTY contender for me 👍
@skavenslayer1933 this is probably the first time I've legit been addicted to a game since Hades and Zelda: BotW
Loving UO even though I don't do much tactics bit moving along
My favorite so far has been Granblue Fantasy Relink … which surprises me given the behemoths dropping this year. Not sure exactly why but this one in particular captured my heart. I ended up beating every difficulty in the game.
2024 JRPG lineup is incredibly stacked with games like ff7 rebirth, infinite wealth, persona 3R, unicorn overlord already receiving critical and user positive reception while bangers such as trials of mana, shin megami tensei VV, metaphor and sandland just around the corner sheesh
The more I look at my backlog, the more I'm feeling guilty for picking up new games 😂
Pink really makes u shine
We are eating so good this year.
I appreciate you dude. Thanks for the content !
My pleasure!
Been playing Unicorn Overlord ever since it came out. Taking my sweet time with it.
Just started persona 3 reload the other night. First time ever playing a persona or smt game , about 10 hours in and really enjoying it so far.
I've given up on getting you added to a game David. My new plan is to win a huge lottery and hire a company to make the "Life of David" video game. A little pixel David has to play and review games to level up and engage in turn based combat to battle other CZcamsrs for the King Of The Reviewers title. 🤣
I’ve been playing older games so far this year. Finishing the pixel remasters right now.
"Dude, this is dope". Ngl it sometimes it feels like I'm listening to my boomer father try to talk about RPGs 💀
So nice to hear you give recognition to Guardian Crusade. One of the most unsung gems on the PS1.
I didn't expect you to mention Dragon's Dogma 2, even though it is technically a Japanese developed RPG. I've been madly in love with it just as I was with the first one, they're in a way the spiritual successors to Breath of Fire, since the story always carries a bunch of similarities to that and it has a bunch of former developers from BoF.
Also good lord CZcams and there notification system how the hell is it 5 days late at 6:30am 😅
All the games I'm waiting for in 2024 have not released yet. I'm waiting for Eiyuden Chronicles, Suikoden Remasters, Trails Through Daybreak and Vision Of mana. I've been playing older games as this year has been slow for me, I know it will pick up later this year
Just finished FE 3 houses in my backlog, these things take forever to finish
I may try DD2 but instead been looking at old skyrim on pc with mods
Hi David! I'm still playing catch-up from the last few years. I just can't keep up with all this jrpg goodness! I have Final Fantasy Crisis Core reunion, 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim, Unicorn Overlord, and FF7 Remake on the docket. (And this is just a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of my backlog.) Thanks again for all your hard work David and have a blessed day!
Whom did you pick to carry your Ring of the Maiden?
When u brought up ff7 rebirth i though u were gonna rant about the moogle 😂
Even tho I haven't played a Saga game since SF 1 & 2 on PS1; I'm oddly excited for the new Saga game that's coming out.
Secrets of Grindea is FINALLY in full/official release? I feel like I first saw that game 6 or 7 years ago.
We need a fitness video/channel David!!
Hi David! Will you cover the new SaGa game releasing this month? I forgot if it's a series you enjoy... I'm old so I'll wait for an opinion by a trusted source if I should embark on the time commitment 😂
I will!!
OMG your in vegas, lets go! Hope to see you at one of the cons one day. On a side note, I cannot even keep up with even 10% oft the amazing games coming out lately. The industry is on fire lately, and its all because of indies. Indie is the future. Indie Japanese especially have always been on another level. Now Korea is making bangers left and right too. I think I got 600 games on my steam wishlist alone. I been no lifing palworld lately.
I’m going to a convention at the end of the month actually!
@davidvinc Going to that one too with the fam. Ill try to build up the courage to say hi if i see you. ^ ^
I have the sealed Collector's Edition of Unicorn Overlord on my living room table, hope I can motivate myself at some point. 😕
Great introduction; that opening line from Secret of Mana just HIT me! Probably doesn't hurt that I'm playing that Climate Crisis hack right now, which... man, even the hacks I'm playing didn't come out this year... I never buy new stuff, (I always wait for patches and sales, plus I've got a backlog to slay) so I don't have anything to add, but Astra Hunter Zosma looks really cool; I'll definitely have to check that out! Secrets of Grindea, too, but that's been on my radar for YEARS while it was still in development.
I really wish that they would revive the Wild Arms series. The first Wild Arms was my favorite and the third one seemed interesting.
There is a dual kick starter for two games, one called Penny Blood which is meant to be a spiritual successor to the Shadow Hearts games which actually has me more interested than the second one which is called Armed Fantasia which is going to be a spiritual successor to the Wild Arms series, you should check them out.
Yeah, it's insane how many JRPGs have released this year so far, and we've only JUST entered April. Really looking forward to what the rest of 2024 offers in the JRPG department!
There's just so many! I can't keep up!
I'm an atheist and I'm still thinking God for this JRPG Renaissance. Feels like I've been in a drought forever.
I really REALLY love the swimsuit in like a dragon
First off, yes. You're right about Grandia. Grandia II is one of my favorite stories in all of gaming, and easily my favorite battle system for a traditional turn-based RPG. Ryudo is like... Yusuke Urameshi from Yu Yu Hakusho, but as a fantasy swordsman. Ryudo is my favorite male lead in gaming, too. His growth is phenomenal. People want change in their characters, well this one has it in spades. And not just him, either. The threesome of Ryudo, Elena, and Milennia are absolutely a laugh-riot. You'll wonder who he'd choose to be with, and the ending just might surprise you. I played this on Dreamcast, PS2, Switch, and PC... if I had a one of the systems it was coming out for this year, I'd be getting it again. It's that good.
Now did I see someone decided to make their own version of Final Fantasy Legend II?!! *high-pitched fangirl squeals* Oh man, I'm getting that ASAP. HELL YES. That was one of the games of my childhood.
Great list~
Right on about the mandatory mini games. Down with Blitzball.
We are being served well this year with some Rpg Goodness! I have two dream games I still would love to see and that is a new Skies Of Arcadia game, &I would love a Supernatural game based on the tv series playing the protaginst Jensen Ackles of course being Dean Winchester and observing his perfect handsome assets through the entire game 😁😍😉
I liked the mini games in Rebirth. There were WAY too many of them. Also about half of them are stacked in the Corel region. Spacing them out just a bit would have helped.
For the 2 Grandia games I'd rather by them 1 at a time ie buy Grandia 2 HD WITHOUT having to buy the 1st game since in the first game it just takes TOO long for lv 25 to lv 30 spells and even LONGER to hit that lv for your own party the 2nd and 3rd games don't HAVE skill/spell levels and just skill/spell points that you spend on lving them up to max skill lv 5 which is SO much easier then NOT having to USE them in battles.
I liked the video! ❤
Yay! Thank you!
I love rebirth but find the mini games exhausting couldn’t stand the moogle one. Since dogma I find it hard to go back and finish things off. Unicorn was also such a surprise for me as I wasn’t hyped played the demo the bought day 1 .
I fully agree about ff7 rebirth, that game is my life right now but some of those mini games were too much. Plus I really suck at queen’s blood.
Hate to break it to you David but granblue's hot guys are actually just Mimics in disguise
I´m going to get me Class of Heroes. It´s great.
I am surprised and happy grandia hd collection came on playstation system again .
still waitin for my copy of unicorn overlord to ship
Omg I'm losing sleep from this game. Its sooooo good.
Indie games aside, I'm proud to be up-to-date on this year RPG agenda.
Special mention to Unicorn Overlord, potential goat in its category imho. Vanillaware strikes again :)
10:01 She threw shade !
I want that Zosma game I hope it comes to Xbox but I’m sure we will have to pay for it which I don’t mind
I'm a straight man but you are 🔥
So many promising games. If you could release a list of games we shouldn't play, that would help cut down my list 😅
Love for Dragon's Dogma and Grandia. ❤
Whoever’s considering buying DD2, don’t. Wait for it to be properly optimised, it’s unplayable currently unless you have a beast of a pc. My 4090 barely gets more than 60fps in major cities with insane stuttering.
I hate mandatory mini games too! Rebirth has been rough
Eiyuuden Chronicles is coming soon too. Suikoden 6 baby!
Uh, I’m so impressed by your conditioning. You must have amazing discipline. Well done.
Thank you so much!
I would also add Rise of the Ronin.
That’s not an rpg lol
Please include timestamp in the description. Coming back to the video multiple times has been a challenge to find a part of the video. Please consider it.
Oh I thought I did! thanks for letting me know, I fixed it :)
The fact it's only been three months and there are already at least ten RPGs deserving of the title of best tells me the switch clearly has far too many RPGs, or the bar has been set very low 😂
You should play/check Honkai Star Rail, really good turn base rpg
Don't care ! I just want to play freaking Eiyuden! Hurry UP !!! 😂
Secrets of Grindea, hehe, I understood
Great video, as always. Love from Ukraine ❤
Should i play Persona 3 before 5?
It doesn’t matter. you can play them in any order that you want.
@@davidvinc Thank you for replying sir, have a great day 😀
I haven’t played ff7 yet because I choose to play P3 first. FF7 remake was alittle disappointing. I hear this one improves on the last one. Gonna definitely pop it in soon
3:50
Persona 3.. Relewd? xD
Dragons dogma was fun at first but is quickly too easy
This may be a top 10 currently but something tells me a certain successor to a very much loved series is gonna be taking the lead 😉
I wish for a Breath of Fire remake. but not the way Final Fantasy VII got remade. I want the game to keep the same vibe and feel. I understand action rpgs are great, but that is not the final fantsy I fell in love with. Now it looks just like any other action rpg out there and for me it has lost its original vibe, enviroment, feel, hope I found the right words. So I AM really glad that Star Ocen 2 remake didn't go this road and kept the original feeling and spirit of the game. Love it.
Once Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door remake comes out, no doubt it'll be up there.
We are in a fighting game golden age and seemingly a jrpg one as well.
However, this is definitely one of the worst periods ever for gaming as a whole
My god the mini games in FF7 Rebirth are soooo obnoxious. There’s like fifty mini games and only like seven of them are actually fun. I spent a hundred hours in that game and I wouldn’t be surprised if half of my playtime was trying to get those damn perfect scores that most of those mini games demand. If the final game has that many mini games (or more), I’m going to lose my mind.
Me me me me me I haven't played that game and I never will yay Final Fantasy 7
Ff7 is a slog. Ngl
I avoided Like A Dragon as it looked silly but finally gave in. It's awesome! Don't skip it! It has a strong narrative, nice combat, lots of humour and plays great on the SteamDeck.
I was struggling to finish FF7: Rebirth (which is super super meh) but this is the complete opposite. It's a proper game whose many cutscenes are a joy not a chore.
It's so good!
@@davidvinc I really like that the lead character isn't another teenager, it's a guy of around my age.. and he kind of acts like it too. Reminds of of John Wick a bit in a way.
To answer the question of who hasn't played Rebirth: me. I am dying for them to release it on PC, but I've come to the realization that I don't have the patience to sit down at my consoles anymore, I just want to play on my PC, since that way I'm in the same room with my wife rather than having to go elsewhere. On that subject, any update as to a PC release date? I just finished Remake, actually, since it took me a while to go back to it after not properly grokking the combat on my first attempt on the PS4, and now I'm beyond ready to get to experience the next major chunk of the story.
Holy ... You're Gorgeous 😍
