  • In this video I look at the origins of the first solo gamebook. I use the book You are the Hero by Jonathan Green to talk it through.
This is the third video of my History Of Games and RPGs video series.

Fighting Fantasy blew my mind as a kid too. I'm sure its a common story for people of a certain age. It introduced me to Roleplaying games and the fact that there were board games that were better than Monopoly or Cluedo. Its been a life long obsession!
I'm currently playing the Lone Wolf books. Some how they passed me by. They are all being reprinted with fantastic new covers and an appendix that goes deep in to the lore of the world the books are based in. I highly recommend them!!

A very interesting video. A few years ago I came across Warlock of Firetop mountain at a local weekly book fair. It really got me into these gamebooks. I've been fortunate enough to find a few others out in the wild. Really want to collect all of them but sadly they are quiet expensive if I get them online in my country.
I also found a Tolkien Quest Night of the Nazgul book. Any chance you can make a video about that as a cursory look made me think its system is quite different from FF?
PS: Today I came across The Cave of Time.

Thanks 🙏 I’ll take a look and have a think. My focus is largely on finishing 2D6 Realm at the moment but I’d like to do more videos

Own all the FF books and all of Fabled Lands, few of DestinyQuest, Virtual reality, and some modern indie ones. Best one I ever played is called Heroes of Urowen (poor translation though). I think games ("dungeonbooks"?) like D100 dungeon and 2D6 are on their way to supplant this genre though. I remember being bored playing Lone Wolf seeing past the amount of luck required to move forward. Having more agency helps but at a certain point its better to make it a board game/table game

I just got into gamebooks myself, and after seeing two of the best series from the golden era were being reprinted FF and lone wolf I had to go with lone wolf instead as they don't seem to be reprinting all the FF books just some of them and I like to 100% stuff. hopefully maybe in the future they print them all.

2D6 kickstarter backer here. Also, using the FF series to inspire English language learners to read English and acquire a hobby enjoyed worldwide. I’ll pass on the video. Thanks for making it.

Thanks Tim, awesome. When I have time I'm going to make some more content of FF. Cheers
