What fun. First chicks! I incubated hundreds of duck and goose eggs. Sometimes I let a goose sit on a clutch of eggs. But they don't see all that well and can accidently step on their goslings. But the whole tribe of adult geese will protect and raise those babies!

Yay! Am so glad you are raising your own birds! I did this for years and it was wonderful though we took a lot of grief from “experts” from the feed store. We managed hens closely and had great success. Then we traded out roosters of new lines to keep the traits we liked. Now my adult children can do the same thing. Lovely. 🐥🐥🐥🐥!

When i was a kid my folks sold eggs. A few hundred layers. All free range. A few roosters mixed in. I would find the clucks (broody hens) and set them on eggs someplace with a bushel basket over them for one day. When i removed the basket they always adopted that nest as their own. Three weeks later she was running around the yard with her chicks.
