Chillax friend. China is an abhorrent polluter, but let's be better than comparing ourselves to the lowest common denominator. There is a ton of crap entering our waters via the Mississippi and Gulf. Venezuela just lost a clandestine oil tanker creating a miles wide oil slick down there. Lots of threats impact the quality of the water and I'm willing to make changes even if there's only a possibility it could help the oceans.

Big sugar and Big Phopshate in south Florida is likely causing the problem but they aren't going to mess with large corporations. They're likely going to put it all on individuals. Soon we're going to see a big push against people fertilizing their lawns but the funny thing is, most people in that area don't even have lawns, it's all rock/shell.

Orlando, in Orange County Florida , OUC water services dumps all the reclaimed water, (treated sewage) into the St John's River... This feeds into the ocean AND the Florida Aquifer. This reclaimed water still tests positive for toxic chemicals used on farms, golf courses and lawns as well as prescription drugs from people flushing them down the toilet. Meanwhile in other areas of Florida, town workers regularly come and test local wells of people's homes. When asked what exactly they were testing for, I was informed that they were testing for a number of things, but mainly arsenic. I'm not that far from the ocean.

We are witnessing the grand finale, the final stages of the death of a marine ecoystem that is also happening globally. It is the end result of the death of all benthic marinelife such as hard and soft corals, sponges, plants, and algaes. It starts inshore but its a toxic soup nothing can get out of. The more that dies, the more toxins there are that cause further water quality degradation. It is a self compounding effect. We knew this was inevitable in the 1980s. What you're witnessing is only the final results. Get real people. All the corals and very important benthic marine life is 90% dead. Stop pointing fingers at everyone else. We all did this. I even wrote to Wood's Hole (Oceanographic Institute) on Cape Cod regarding this. And I've read similar data about autopsies on whales showing damage to the auditory organs.

My wife and I knew something strange was going on with the fishing and overall lack of marine life down in the Keys this year. We spend six weeks on Grassy Key every Jan and February. We are more active than most, getting out on the water every day, paddle boarding, kayaking, snorkeling, windsurfing - and this year I added fishing to the list - from a small 16' fishing boat to both fish and snorkel.
In years past, we saw way more spotted eagle rays (only saw one this year) shark and other marine life... I hit the fishing hard for 6 weeks ... we caught nothing inshore, and very little out on the patch reefs. I knew it was unusual. Coffins Patch reef looked dead when we snorkeled it. We also noted all of the dead sponge washing up from Long Point Key state park to Bahia Honda...

The ocean is huge, they can get away from low oxygen they can go deeper, toxic waste would kill all of them not just one kind. This is so weird and scary.

Everyone here should know that Brian Lapointe is very thorough. I used to know him in my research as well. But, we cannot point fingers at speculation bc one issue i want to make clear is this: when benthic marinelife organisms die off, like corals and grasses and such, and other organisms take over, decomposition causes low oxygen saturation plus the formation of bacterias that act like neurotoxins to fish. As a marine reseracher of 40 yrs myself, i highly suspect that is what we're seeing. In other words, the die off is like a stinking rotten grave that affects the living. Its part of the process of marine ecosystem death I'm afraid to say. It's a chain reaction.

The cartels quite often use offshore drop off points that some fisherman or speedboater goes to pick up later. If a storm comes by, or another boater runs over the package by accident, bundles can get loose and tear open. Some estimates say that about twenty percent of drugs get lost in transit.

I keep fish. The smallest change in that water balance and it will affect everything in it. Notice how you can see the red streaks on some of the fish?
