    Assembly was very straight forward with the Su-27. A child could assemble it with a little help! It's that easy. Once the FrSky X8R receiver was installed and the TX16S setup it was time to head to the flying field.
    Knowing that I would be flying off grass I removed the FOD guard on the nose wheel. With it attached it only exposes about 3mm of the tyre. This is done by removing the C-clip, removing the axle and then removing the two screws holding the wire part of the FOD guard. When putting the axle back use 2 washers to pad it out so the C-clip does not get forced off by the axle moving side to side.
    Also later changed the nose wheel for larger diameter wheel. www.motionrc.e...
    All my current EDF jets use 4-Max 6S6000 60C packs. Although normally larger than the recommended pack size for any jet they provide more power and longer flight times at the expense of some agility due to the additional weight. So I was keen to see if the Su-27 would fly on them off our wet, mildly bumpy, not very short grass at the flying field. I found that the balance point with one of these packs, as far back as possible, was 20-15mm in front of the recommended CG point. For that reason I cut out a section of foam at the back of the battery bay to allow me to move it back another 15mm. I did this while ensuring the battery would not prevent the nose wheel from retracting fully. The CG had moved a little but was still in front of the recommended range. The first two take attempts failed with the nose gear not looking like it would lift off. There is a lot of movement in the nose leg which is perfect for absorbing the bumps on a grass runway. Always the last resort for electric models but out of necessity I then added 30oz of lead to the rear tail section and the 3rd take off attempt was successful but was assisted by a bump half way up the flying field ! Once in the air some up trim was needed for level flight and with one circuit complete I nailed the throttle and put in some progressively low passes. With the speed part of the test complete I cut the throttle and deployed the speed/air brake and made some slow passes for the camera man. Knowing that I had used some battery capacity with failed take offs I opted to put down the landing gear and let the Su-27 slow down before holding up the nose with elevator input and balancing it there with the throttle for a high alpha descent and giving a burst of power on the final flare before touching down the mains and then nose gear.
    In conclusion this jet flies extremely well on a lighter 6S5000 pack but the forward CG with this pack does make it difficult to take off from grass unless the other modifications are made. The larger nose wheel gives this jet a more positive angle of attack and really helps it get in the air.

    I’ve put a harder spring in my nose leg as well which stops the bounce and holds the required take off incidence👍

    • @EssentialRC
      @EssentialRC  Před rokem +1

      Not a fan of doing that. You're compromising the nose strut to absorb the landing.

      @@EssentialRC I only went up one gauge- it still compresses, just doesn’t pogo waiting for a rebound bump to get airborne. The biggest issue is the battery weight is directly of the nose gear which doesn’t help. I’ve done all your other mods as well 👍

      Where did you get the spring from

    • @27niner
      @27niner Před 11 měsíci +1

      @@EDF_FANatic I had a FMS Corsair retract spring that I cut down and added in stack with the existing one. Raised nose about 5 mm when loaded and this was enough to get the incidence right for take off. I also removed the FOD guard as it was catching the short grass strip we use. Finally went up 10 mm in nose wheel size. These 3 simple mods did the trick

      @27niner thanks, all I did was remove the fod and stretch the stock spring for grass ops. Relatively long roll-out but not too bad. If I try your mods I might be able to get up there even quicker. Thanks for sharing.

    Bit strange having to mod so much out of the box. Was the original CoG so far out ?
    I guess most Jets are made for smooth runways and you like I have grass. Good flight on a windy day and a lot different to the early attempt to get off the ground. 👍

    • @EssentialRC

      For short grass runways it was essential. For an asphalt runway it would get to higher speed on the ground so no modifications needed.

    Man mine is a killer to get of grass! If your using the cg from the manual does the tail weights not push the cg back??

    • @EssentialRC
      @EssentialRC  Před rokem

      That is why I've done all the mods. It never gets fast enough on grass to get enough lift to rotate. Need to more the CG back so lighter on the nose wheel. Having a larger nose wheel to give it better angle of attack helps as well.

  • @IceMan2035

    Great plane but better with vector thrusting if equipped. Do you think you could 80mm and how hard is it to get to the ESCs?

    • @EssentialRC
      @EssentialRC  Před rokem +1

      Have added thrust vectoring to quite a few EDFs over the years. Just not worth it. Heavy EDF jets take so much altitude to recover from stall and the thrust to weight ratio is never good enough to recover quickly. Only exceptions are light thrust vectored EDFs that are built very very light. Don't think bigger fans would fit and would just make it heavier anyway.

    • @paulmullen8316
      @paulmullen8316 Před rokem

      Also if you fitted twin 80's you would need 2 x 6s batteries to power it as 1 would probably give you about a minute flight time lol

    • @IceMan2035
      @IceMan2035 Před rokem +1

      Depends on throttle mangmanagement. I fly turbine jets a lot more full throttle but I my gas planes I manage it more. Like to get an SU30 with vector thrust of course turbine. Now edf planes I prefer Hobbywing 160amp ESCs, 8s 100cc lipo batteries, and JP edf motors. I can get up to 6 or 7 mins on my A10 but I manage it bc it's not a fighter jet.
