1968 News Investigation Report, "Suffer the Little Children" done by Bill Baldini of CBS10 (NBC10).
Want to photograph Pennhurst legally?!? You can sign up for a photography tour by Visiting Pennhurst Paranormal on Facebook or PennhurstParanormal.com . If you want to explore Pennhurst and also be taught how to get those amazing shots, check out AbandonedAmerica.us to sign up for one of Matthew Christopher's workshops at Pennhurst...
Built in the early 1900s in Pennsylvania, Pennhurst was designed to house and help the mentally challenged (a better word than what they described them in those years) children, teens, and adults through life and to get them back into society to live on their own. Families who could not care for their love ones or who did not want to deal with this illness on their own would drop them off to this institution. Some would come back to visit their children, others would leave them and never see them again. Pennhurst was good to its patients in the early years providing help to the mentally challenged. Over the later years, the campus became overcrowded. They tried building more but that only seemed to help a little. By the 50s, there was over a dozen buildings on campus. The overcrowded buildings was not the main issues. There was not enough staff for the patients. Some were living in horrid conditions sleeping in there own fecal matter with bugs flying around their beds. Some were mistreated by being mentally, physically, and sexually abused. Other were harmed in ways of beatings, fights, teeth pulling to the ones who would bite, and being injected with meds that were not really needed for treatment. Pennhurst when it started was supposed to be a successful Pennsylvania funded institution that would help these children and adults but it failed. What caused Pennhurst to close in 1986-1987 was a lawsuit by a former patient. Her case favored her and the entire facility was shut down. After it closure, the buildings were just dropped and left to rot. They remained abandoned for many years. This location was a huge hotspot for urban explorers. A lot of the land was sold to the Army reserve and to build a VA hospital. In the early to mid 2000s, according to records, the remaining property was bought from the state by a private owner for 2 Million US Dollars. He ran a recycling company here but also planned to turn this place into a museum. In 2009-2010, a third party started a haunted house on the property in a few buildings including the one I have pictures to help make revenue to fix up the buildings. It caused a lot of issues with local residents and people who said the haunted house was disrespecting the children and adults who suffered and died here. Today the haunted house still remains and is allows the owners to continue to fix up the property. So far they are offering photography tours which I have done 3 so far and also do ghost hunts in the spring to early fall season. The internet holds a ton of information about this property so please keep reading.

Exploring With Josh Pennhurst is an awesome place. Better if you seen it before 2007 though. I grew up near this area and it was the place to see when I was in highschool. Today they use some of the buildings like the main one in the video thumbnail for a haunted house, some for ghost hunts, etc. They also have mulching company that runs on the property. Before 2007, it was untouched

+Abandoned Steve (Historical - Urbex) have you ever done like interviews of any of the people whom worked there? This is a 1st for me. I've never heard of this place. & I'm so glad that this place isn't up & running. As they say "YOU LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERYDAY." After many years of it not running but still having those buildings up.....still a very sad place(sighs/heart aches). I can only imagine those whom were placed there. & left......😭

Steve, thank you so much for your respectful attitude toward people with mental disabilities and thank you to those viewers who posted comments showing the same respect. Here in Indiana in the 60s there was a similar scandal at similar institution. Last year I lost my brother who had Down's Syndrome and I couldn't bear to watch the news coverage in this video. My brother was kept at our home as long as possible and eventually after the death of a parent I had to place him a group home as his needs were so great because of the dementia that occurs with people who have DS and I couldn't meet those needs. I then found out how bad the group home was thanks to a whistle-blower and I had to get my brother out and Adult Protective Services in though almost nothing could be done as the people being mistreated usually can't complain and can't testify in court so APS staff can't do as much as they know needs to be done. Abuse, neglect, and exploitation of people with special needs still occur. Since my brother was removed from the first group home I've heard that there have been deaths there and I know of financial wrongdoing. One of the people in the organization running the "home" put his slut mistress, who had been pregnant by him at the same time as his wife, and who is an incompetent crook, in charge of the group home. Thanks be to God that my brother's last couple of years were in excellent group homes run by the Stone Belt Center here in Indiana. ***I don't know if it will happen but I hope that people will stop using the word "retarded" or "REE-tard", as some say, as an insult or slang term as it's an insult to some of the most vulnerable people in our society, people we should be protecting.**Your video of Pennhurst is outstanding not just because of the beauty of the content and the quality of the production but because of the message you give to others. My deep and sincere and thanks and appreciation to you, Steve.

From what I researched and know of the horrid conditions of those patients, I would have to say that Bill Baldini did a good job exposing the horrible conditions and treatment those patients received. It was something that had been going on for years once the overcrowding came into play. I work for a psychiatric hospital, and we never take in more patients than beds we have therefore we don't allow our facility to become overcrowded which allows each and every patient to get the upmost care and treatment

Steve thank you for sharing your Pennhurst experience. Opening your video with an excerpt from Bill Baldini's 4 part news report "Suffer the children" shows your respect for those who lived, suffered, died and were freed from Pennhurst and other institutions around the country. I'm sure the Pennhurst Preservation group would be very interested in your video if they haven't already contacted you. What happened at Pennhurst was tragic but it was the starting point for the deinstitutionalization of the disabled wharehoused in these facilities, giving back their rights, privacy and most important their voice. Thanks again Steve I will send links to this video to others who wish to help keep Pennhurst State School alive to honor those who suffered.

Very impressive footage. The historic news story at the beginning is a nice touch for those of us who have never heard of it.
We have had similar institutions like this in New Zealand... started with the best of intentions but ended up as a shining example of how NOT to treat the mentally ill. Most of these are now closed and the people who suffered in them forgotten. One such institution not far from where I live was closed about 15-20 years ago and the current owners just recently discovered an unmarked grave yard on the site containing the graves of war veterans (according to old records). It is explained away as "that's how it was back then", .....such disrespect is very sad.

I visited Pennhurst this past weekend on a photography outing. It is amazing how much has been demolished and cleaned up in just 2 years let alone 6 years ago. All of the buildings shown @6:47, behind the little round house are now gone with little trace. These looked like massive building that I would have loved to see in person. The overall creepy feel is still strong. If you get the chance, go visit! Great footage. A step back in time.

Steve: I have always admired your videos on abandoned structures especially the Demidio mansion that once housed the theatre pipe organ. The Pennhurst video reminds me of the Kings Park Psychiatric Center not far from my house. After it closed in the mid 1990's a number of structures either burned or were torn down and just a few years ago the state leveled 16 more. I have always been in awe of the classic architecture that was used in the construction of these institutions which belies some of the horrors that went on behind the walls in a lot of them. Long Island had at four of these institutions all of them quite large in size. Pilgrim State, Central Islip, Kings Park and Edgewood. I believe that only the first three have structures still standing while Edgewood is completely gone but not entirely sure. I have extensively photographed the exteriors of the KPPC buildings which is allowed by the state. I have no interest in going inside for a number of reasons two of which are it is illegal and hazardous . Thanks for your well done videos. The use of the drone only adds to the quality and allows one to see even more. Your presentation is very professional.

Warehouses for unlucky humans. The fact of the matter is that the disabled people were taken from their families early. Even the doctors told worried parents "Just forget about him". Without families to defend their rights, these people were very vulnerable. The "Good Old Days" weren't good for everyone!

i have family that worked here.. they described the deplorable conditions they had to work with. they all said the same.. sad. there is a labyrinth of tunnels beneath that even the male employees wouldn't travel alone

DVincentW2 For some reason I cant respond to your other name so I tagged you with this name in response to your comment. You are correct about the power plants. Been there since the 70s. It was such a windy day and the blades do peak in the frame sometimes.. The music I use it all composed by Kevin Macleod..

Very well done video Steve!!!! It is maddening how they treated these people like that. Makes me think who is mentally challenged. If they are trying to save the building with the copper dome, it has some very serious issues with the seams. they need to be redone as they look like they have come apart. Trying to find reasonably priced copper smiths for that is hard to come by though. It would be a shame to let the new roof work go from leaks in the dome corners etc... The other roofs....OMG !! The 3rd floor is the roof on some. Looks sort of like some of the older buildings were done in some sort of Dutch revival architecture. Looks a lot like some of the buildings found in Holland and the old Dutch colonial sites like Willemstad, Curacao. I hope they are able to save that main structure at least.

alibabafurball Thank You! Yea i am not sure what they are doing with that dome. I have an older photo from 2008 where it was just missing a lot of things. They seem to put over some green walls of some sort. Some of the buildings roofs are in terrible shape.

Stunning work, Steve. I just saw your SS United States tour.
Recently, I viewed a post of a guy who toured Pripyat, the abandoned city which hosted Chernobyl's workers and families, among others. The government won't let people stay in the area more than 2 weeks at a time, even if they are armed with intricate knowledge of radioactive properties and safety equipment. This is because the abundant signs of once flourishing human presence reduced to a state of decay gradually took a cumulative toll on people's psyches.
While your imagery is powerful, I'll probably have to spread my viewing dosage of your posts out a little.

Why are so many windows left open? I can understand a few for ventilation but so many leads to faster decay of the buildings and their interiors from the elements. These hospitals are always like this, why?

    • @Kpoole35
      @Kpoole35 Před 8 lety

+S Luzardo Most of the windows are broken, but they don't see the need to really keep these buildings since they didn't have much money into them to begin with, even when the institute was running they didn't have much to put into it.

Abanddoned Steve I want to say this when Bill Baldini was done the place closed and when they closed they had gotten things right people were being taken care of as it closed Because of Bill Baldini they were loaded on buses given $50.00 each and left off in down town Phoenixville Pa to fend for themselves, do you really think that was good for people who could not live on their own? All I can say is Bill Baldini did this to them to be a big time reporter! And many of them died out on the streets! I never worked there but used to go with my car Club to play Baseball with the poor souls, I think Bill Baldini is and was a person looking to make himself a big shot in the news! He really did not care about the poor souls just glory for himself. I knew people who worked there those last years, and loved the poor souls who lived there, Bill Baldini only cared about himself he was a very rotten self serving news man!
