My personal opinion. That style of riser is made more for an elevated rest. It has a wide flat shelf and flat window instead of being radiused for better arrow clearance. It also has the burger hole for threading an adjustable elevated rest. You can build up a section of the rest to get good flight as well. I always get cleaner arrow flight from elevated rests. A threaded rest placed through the burger hole can also allow for fine tuning of arrow flight. No wrong way, too each their own. Enjoy the process.

Thank you. When my shoulder heals I’m gonna shoot and she how she tunes. I have a center rest flipper on order if it doesn’t tune out good. Thanks for watching and taking time to share your thoughts.

In my opinion I’d try shooting off the shelf then from an elevated rest. But I’d shoot both through paper. Paper tuning usually tells the whole story. I worked at an archery retailer and range many years ago and paper tuning a bow was our method for all setups. And a chronograph if you have access to one.

@@buddy22801012 thank you for watching and commenting. I have a homemade paper tuner that I made out of pvc pipe and a chronograph as well. I’ll give it another try. As for now I’m going to run with my Stalker Stickbow Coyote longbow. Thanks for the advice. It’s much appreciated.

    Brad,
Hope & Pray for a Speedy Recovery!
I've been Shooting & Hunting with Traditional Bows going into my 49th yr. Your question for shooting off the self or elevated rest , is a Trick Question ! LOL !! I've shot ILF riser bows both ways , as long as you are shooting the right spined arrows and nocking point , I see No Difference . It's All in the Individual !
    Stay Safe & Healthy !
    God Bless !

Fred Bear and many others used to add a toothpick or the smaller end of a chop stick under their calf hair to lessen arrow contact . It works pretty good on my long bow and I’m gonna use it on my recurves next.
I’ll be praying for your speedy recovery ❤️‍🩹
    God Bless 🙏😇❤️🇺🇸

If you cant the bow, off the shelf is better. As you pivot, the arrow makes wider arc above your knuckle with elevated rest. The greater this arc, the greater the change in point of impact. Many sight shooters use a level to make sure the bow is perfectly level. Shooting with bow vertical, elevated rest allows less arrow interference. I shoot both ways. Target-elevated good. Hunting or hunting practice or 3d shoots-off the shelf or knuckle.

I actually just built a short mag bow ... I had 35 lb limbs laying around and so since I have been wanting a Bear Super Mag but don't want to spend $450 to buy one ... I made a riser. (I have a video on my channel if you want to see it)
Anyway, I made the shelf dead center of the riser & consequently the bow instead of the handle like all my other bows ... And I have to tell ya ... It is my best shooting bow and I love it!!! The arrow sits dead center and I think it's the way to go!!! I don't know why bowyers don't do it, but hey, I'm glad I did!
I will pray for you ... I know all about bad shoulders! Mine are destroyed from my pro wrestling days and a bad xar accident. I have had a 3rd degree break of my right AC joint and that's not fun yo live with. (Never had it fixed.)
God bless ya and rest that shouler ... But a word of advice ... Keep some motion in it by moving it through some rehab shouler exercises. No weight just some hanging circular motions, maybe see a chiropractor or keniseologist to get the proper exercises.

I think if you want to shoot Barebow or even serious 3D. An elevated rest is gonna generally give better arrow flight. If your focus is on hunting I think off the shelf is more managable. Closer to centershot also generally makes a bow more efficient. Or gives a more equal pull on the limbs.

@@UncleDanBand64 thank you for watching and commenting. I have some stuff on order. Shelf material and several rest. It’s my Warf. I had shooting really good and snagged the rest on a ladder after season. Being my always in a hurry self. Can’t seem to get it back. Going to try the shelf first, as it is only for hunting. Thanks for the advice.

All my bows I elevate the rest 1/4 of an inch either with leather or a flipper style rest. I like a slight angle downwards between the shelf and the sight window for the arrow to stay in place. This helps if its a windy day and the wind is moving that arrow outwards. I do like thicker velcro as it helps contain the arrow.

@@bradlauber9097 thank you for your insight. I am going to play around with it, after another week of rest on my shoulder, and see what kind of arrow flight i get. The simplicity of off the shelf is appealing, but I am guessing, like you suggested, an elevated rest would provide better arrow flight and easier tuning.

Nice to have met you at twin oaks. I have a Samick discovery with a nap flipper rest and get great arrow flight. I’ve taken it off and it shots good, but not as good as the elevated rest. Hope your shoulder gets better soon.I’ve been shooting bows a long time and I’ve always get better arrow flight with an elevated rest. I also have a Bear Kodiak with feather rest, shoot wood aluminum and carbon off of it and get great arrow flight.
