Yamaha Viking external gear selector adjustment

  • The Yamaha Viking, Wolverine and Rhino side-by-side ATVs use a cable to link the gear selection lever to the gearbox. These units can, over time, fall out of adjustment causing both an engine starting fault and clunky gear selection too....
    The operation and adjustment of this unit is covered under a Yamaha service but, unfortunately, often gets overlooked affecting the smooth drivability of the machine and can also lead to more serious internal transmission faults.
    So....here's a short video showing you how to make the necessary adjustments to the cable to ensure easy, smooth gear selection.
    If you have any questions then please add them to the comments below and I'll do my best to get back to you quickly.

    Thanks Andy, great video. Still driving a 2012 Rhino with over 8,000 fairly hard KM's on it. Still going strong.

    I found a solution to a issue on a viking 700 the other day, the oem replacement cable seems about 1/'2" shorter than it should be. you can take off the side cover on the engine that goes to the shift drum. Intentionally skip a gear on this assembly and BAM the cable fits. This is a weird problem, IT does work and does not affect anything so far.. Anyone else do this?

      Interesting, I have never had any reports of this issue, will ask around.

    Love your work! Have you done a replacement for the rear steel brake line from the front of the vehicle to the rear of the vehicle the solid one that bolts to the frame? Do you see what happened, the plastic clamps broke the rear line rub on the front driveline and scored a hole in it. I’ve seen nothing as to how to replace that 8 foot brake line, the only way I can figure is removing the entire inner plastics floorboards see just to access it. Sound right? Thanks Rusty

      Hi Stacey, no, not had to do one yet. However, easiest way to fix would be to cut out the damaged section & using a hand flaring tool fit female unions then flare. Then fit a short piece of pipe with male unions & opposing flares to join the two.
      once that's done it's a simple task to just bleed up the system again
      :-)

    Thanks for the video. I have a 2015 Yamaha Viking and I noticed the check engine light comes on when it is H L and R. But not in N. Also when I press on the brake it goes off. I tried your adjustment but did not work. Any thoughts?

    Hi Andy Mechanic, I have a 2016 Yamaha viking and recently attempted to shift into Low. with great force from High to low on the selector but High still showing on the dash and the viking drove away as it was still in high. Im thinking it is a selector cable adjustment, just wondering where to start!

    • @AndyMechanic
      @AndyMechanic  Před 6 lety +1

      Hi Tony, yes, definitely start with cable adjustment but also check the pivots in the lever mechanism are free and well lubricated.
      Hope this helps. Cheers Andy

    Hey Andy, I haven't had any trouble with my gear selector, but my diff lock takes a long time to engage. Any idea if there is a fix for that.

    • @AndyMechanic
      @AndyMechanic  Před 3 lety

      hmmmm. ...make sure you are off the throttle when you press the button. if still takes a while it could be an issue in the front diff - the servo motor has to move a collar, it could be corroded or with some resistance to movement - you'll have to remove the diff & inspect it....
      Cheers Andy

    Andy, I am starting to notice the low gear on my Viking will only engage when I start to accelerate. Sometimes it clicks on it own but mostly having to accel for it to fully engage. This is only happening in low gear. Looking for some feedback

    • @AndyMechanic
      @AndyMechanic  Před 7 lety

      +Craig Olivier no problem. Most likely it's cable adjustment between gear lever and engine. Adjustment is at engine end of the cable. Hope this helps. Cheers Andy

      So if low is giving me trouble, I am assuming I need to put the shifter in the low position when making the adjustment?
      Never worked on one before and trying to avoid making it worse. Thanks for your feedback.

    • @AndyMechanic
      @AndyMechanic  Před 7 lety

      +Craig Olivier yes, just make a datum before you adjust so you can go back to that point. Will only be a minor adjustment to make then try it.

    Question for you , can cross starter relay Viking will start. Only if I have the battery charger hooked to the battery. Put the bike from newtral to any gear check engine light comes on but if I put my foot on the break the light goes out

    Mine is hard to put into low and once I hit the gas it clicks into low once I start to move. This only happens in low. It has done this since day one in May 2018. Is this normal?

      It's possible but also remember that components wear & bed in too. A minor adjustment is sometimes required after a little use. Hope this helps. Cheers Andy

    My reverse indicator light stays on all the time. No matter what gear I have it in. If I’m in Low range, both the L and R are illuminated and I can’t go over 20mph because of rev limiter. What could this be?

      Somehow the connector came off the neutral/reverse switch. Popped it back on and problem solved. Worst part was getting to it.
