  • News of the previous day's Titanic disaster began filtering into New Zealand on April 16, 1912. Initial reports mistakenly said that most or all of the passengers had survived. More than 20 years later, Commander Charles Lightoller described his terrifying experience of the sinking on a BBC radio programme.

    This man was an absolute hero. After Titanic, he would serve in World War I, and in World War II as a retiree, he used his personal boat to evacuate troops from Dunkirk.
